Forgettable Week for FAZ

Share

The last week will be a period Faz will want to forget very quickly as possible.

Faz might be in search of a new paymaster for coach Herve Renard and also found themselves in another embarrassing situation when a Faz vice president Emmanuel Munaile was detained briefly in Kasama and late released over a non-football related problem after being surety for five people who skipped bail in a court case.

But its Renards salary that is worrying after local mining giant KCM decided to end their three-year deal to pay the Frenchman and his assistant Patrice Beaumelles salaries just 7 months into the agreement.

KCM has said the current global economic crisis has forced them to rethink their earlier aggreement to bankroll Renard’s stay as Zambia coach.

Renard is currently away in France on holiday and is expected back sometime this week.

The development comes as Zambia prepare for what will be a very busy first three months of 2009 when they take part in the Cecafa Challenge Cup in Uganda from December 31 to January 13 and the inaugural CHAN finals in Ivory Coast from February 22 to March 8.

Meanwhile, a source familiar with the situation said Faz and KCM are set to meet shortly to discounting their commitment to pay Renards salary before Football House can make a any moves over the cancelled deal.

  1. Well the year has ended. Those that vouched for Kalusha Bwalya as Presido, How do you honestly rate you man. Has anything changed in Zambian football r we better off now than we were under Mulonga. Well this is a real crisis on his hand and lets see how he will solve it

  2. Ofcourse we’re far from being the best but I think Renard has done a satisfactory job so far. It will certainly hamper the progress of the team if he is forced to resign due to salary problems.

  3. #1 Mulonga was a better administrator, at least he had no scandles of selling players to foreign clubs without the consent of the club. In terms of performance nothing has changed, and may be gone down a little bit becauce we are not scoring many goes. The game against Angola was our best performance so far under this administration.

  4. I think its unfair for KCM to blame the global economic crisis. For a company of its size, US$300,000 is not a lot of money when compared to the importance the nation attaches to football. KCM accounts for one sixth of Zambia’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and contributes a third of the nations exports by value. A token act of corporate responsibility wouldn’t, in the least possible way, adverseley them.

  5. Did FAZ sign a contract with KCM over The said salary? If so what was the closes of thd deal and let Faz site kcm of breach of contract. We want Renerd to stay atleast upto 2010.

  6. From the cradle to the grave we must gain more knowledge, Zambia we want things that are high and later we cry like ba ma mi imweeee! ba ma mi mweeeeeeeeee,
Haaaaaaaa wait a minute Banda wen he was campaining he promised to be asist on football, Let him pay. atleast he has some cash by now!

  7. This news is very sad especially with the way these contractors are doing with our zambian people. They are the one contributing to the dying of the soccer in zambia,we had zccm things were not like the way it is going.

  8. Thats why Nchanga have been demoted because KCM could not sponsor them fully even when copper prices where high. SHAME!

  9. Faz needs a legal expert in contruct law. How can a term contruct allow KCM to opt out when the situation gets bad for them. Someone should investigate that contruct. It’s not FAZ that is being short changed, it’s the whole NATION. The contruct should have had a clause defining how to progressively cut back depending on several factors like inflation, taxation, social and corporate responsibilities. They are acting like a bad corporate citizen.

SOCCER administrator Giles Yambayamba has pleaded with

Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) to rescind its decision on financing Chipolopolo coach Herve Renard’s salary.

And Copperbelt minister Mwansa Mbulakulima has expressed happiness that KCM is willing to meet FAZ and discuss the way forward on Renard’s wages.

Yambayamba said on Friday that much as KCM was no under obligation to meet Renard and physical trainer Patrice Beaumelle’s emoluments, it was important the mining giant reconsidered its position.

“We can only plead that they [KCM] come to our aid. We are on our knees… Yes, they may not be under any obligation but we don’t think FAZ will manage to pay,” he said.

Yambayamba said while the global financial crisis was adversely affecting mining companies in the country, KCM would still be in a position to finance Renard’s salary.

He urged KCM to incorporate Renard’s wages in their cost-cutting measures as part of their social responsibility under the circumstances.

Yambayamba said KCM’s withdrawal from Renard’s contract had the potential to cripple Chipolopolo’s performance in the 2010 Africa/World Cup final qualifying round.

“It [withdrawal to pay Renard’s salary] will be regrettable. It will send a wrong signal to other companies operating in the country and where will Zambia go?” he wondered.

  12. ….
Yambayamba, who is FAZ Division One North side National Assembly chairperson, hoped there was a way the government compelled companies in Zambia to support sports.

Last Thursday, sources revealed that KCM had written FAZ indicating its inability to continue financing Renard’s salary.

KCM head of corporate affairs Sam Equamo noted in a press query – without specifications – that the company was focusing on cost-cutting measures to ensure its viability in the wake of the global crunch.

FAZ and KCM signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to confirm Renard’s package on September 11.

  13. continued…

The MoU was expected to see the mining giant pay more than K3.6 billion in salaries over three years for the two foreign coaches.

The three-year deal, signed at the Executive Lodge in Chingola, committed KCM to remit a total of US$ 29,541 to FAZ every month for the payment of salaries and other emoluments for Renard and his right-hand man Beaumelle.

The deal was effective May 1, 2008.
