PRESIDENT Rupiah Banda looks on as Chinese Ambassador to Zambia Li Quiangmin signs a visitors book at Chimfule Lodge in Mfuwe

President Rupiah Banda  said he was happy with the status of wildlife in the South Luangwa National Park adding that more foreign and local tourists should be encouraged to visit the park and other game parks in the country.

Mr. Banda, who is in Mfuwe on a working holiday, said more effort would be channeled at encouraging investments in areas surrounding national parks as a measure of increasing foreign exchange earnings from the wildlife industry.

Mr. Banda was speaking in an interview with ZANIS when he viewed game in the South Luangwa National Park yesterday.

The President viewed the wildlife in the accompany of his wife Thandiwe, Chinese Ambassador to Zambia, Li Qiangmin, Tourism Minister Catherine Namugala and Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) Director General Lewis Saiwama.

President Rupiah Banda, said his administration is working hard to enhance the tourism policy framework in an effort to promote growth of the industry.

President Banda said the policy would be enhanced to facilitate the effective management of wildlife as part of the effort in  developing the sector.

He said government was would not re-invent the strategy that other countries had successfully applied of using wildlife as a driver to tourism growth and overall economic development.

  1. Don’t be too merry Mr President, work extra hard to ensure that we too, have world-class tourism in this country. We still have along way to go.

  2. RB please there are 18 other National parks in Zambia. It is pity no Zambian President has ever attempted to promote or visit them. It is always South luangwa .Thisis why most game parks have been depleted. We are sitting on a Gold mine in terms of ecotourism. But the vision has never been there. We have the wetlands of Bangweulu, Liuwa Plains, Kafue and West Lunga .These can rival any park in Africa if not the whole world.

  3. Well South Luangwa is obviously our best park. I hope RB and team can do something to bring life to such other parks like Nsumbu on the shores of Lake Tanganyika and Lochnvar rich in birdlife but without any meaningful lodge for tourists. I doudt if Hon Namugala has passion and courage for this demanding sector to turn things around, what with the arrongant Tour Operators especially in the Chiawa area, who unfortunately always want to act as regulators and not as ones been regulated.

  4. 8 Mbulawa
I bet you haver never been to any of the national parks in Zambia yourself, yet you have been to several amusement places around the globe. It is not upto Rupiah Banda alone to popularise and market these other national parks it has to start with every Zambian who has a disposable income. Let it statert with you.

  5. Mbulawa for a destination to thrive in tourism it must have the following. Attractions, Amenities, Access and Accomodation.
    Mfuwe has all these

  6. **==**==**== is it possible to diversify entirely from copper to e.g tourism an d agriculture,if so why has it taken so long? please help….

  7. Even in Luangwa he can do what ever he does at state house #12. Thats were u have it wrong. Pliz lets make do with what we at the moment. We have Banda and not any other so lets give him the support he needs to develop Zambia. If we let him make things worse forn Zambia, who do we blame? Ourselves.

  8. #8 and 10

    Amen!

Even Kasaba Bay is one of the tourism resort areas which need to be revamped in order to foster tourism development in the Northern and Luapula provinces respectively. Zambia has unique sceneries which need to be marketed on the international market in order to spur growth in the sector. The Government should also work on projects to support tourism in the country, like the rehabilitations of the roads, hotel construction and the electrification of key areas in tourism resort areas.

It is not possible to completely diversify from copper to tourism. All these three Industries Mining, Tourism AND Agriculture must be stimulated to grow with equal support. Tourism like Mining is a fragile industry which suffers shocks from time to time. Outbreak of diseases, political instability, high prices and emergence of new popular destinations can divert tourists away.

  10. #20 Rashid
Kindly mention one “pressing issue” that the President cannot deal with at Mfuwe and can only be dealt with in Lusaka.

  11. Mr Ba Rupiah Banda, the way Zambian tourism is marketed abroad will never attract any meaningful numbers of tourists. Here in the UK, there is nothing about Zambia in high street travel agencies whereas you find a lot on Kenya, Egypt and South Africa. Teaming up with British Airways is not the solution because the airline is not on the high street per se. Putting tattered Z-Magazines in Zambian high commission and embassy offices is not solution. Employ knowledgeable people and not those Chandalian Matero Uni graduates to market tourism.

  12. **==**==**== Come on Kamyebe, I can tell from your response to #12 which so protective and personal, but you know what, I get the impression that u r 1 of the Zambians who still don’tlearn a lesson from Leaders like RB, who…yes, and with all due respect is our current President, buuut only smiled for you when the are longing for your vote and turn their backs against you the moment they sit in that seat. Look, there is no need of being too partisan here, after all we are all Zambians and need the development of this nation not for PF, UNDP or MMD, but for Zambia my friend.

A holidayis a Holiday and there is no such thingas a Holiday my friend.

  13. #8 Mbulawa you are right on bruv, the Kafue National Park whose area is half the size of Switzerland, has great potential and the only developed area is the area around Itezhi Tezhi and yet the road to go there is worse than the Martian surface. North Luangwa is desolate you would think you are in a foreign country and is more of “basokola” or poachers’ playground. Blue Lagoon and the adjacent Lochinver which are closer to Lusaka, are mere statistics on the number of parks we have.

  14. #22 Golyati, not that there is no issue the prezza cannot deal with in mfuwe that can only be dealt in lusaka. The point is that he is wasting taxpayers’ money by taking Nenani, Leah, James and the entire clan with huge delegations of among others, Catherine Namugala, Simon Kamwendo Miti and other civil servants that accompany them. we are talking about not less than 60 people in the entourage including the imprest carrier. i have been on a presidential trip before, I know what I am talking about.

  15. For a long time I believed the hype about zambian tourism but it all honesty it is an absolute joke.We lag behind all the southern african counries in this area.Tanzania is set to earn US1bn just this year from tourism after atracting 1m tourists.South Africa attracts 2m tourists a year.Safari tourism is a thing of the past. What is needed is a package-eco tourism ,cultural tourism, conference tourism and what South Africa and Tanzania have embarked on recently called undersea or underwater tourism.Lake Tanganyikas depths and marine life has never been fully explored and there are research teams out there that would gladly take up the challenge. What is needed is a whole new approach.

  16. Goodmorning bloggers. I hope you all celebrated xmas well.
Does anyone know if our president has an agenda and an action plan to carry out or is he just speaking whatever comes to mind?

  17. I think it is a shame to have a presint talk about wildlife and tourism in this time of crisis. Tourism is an after thought, another service industry depending on other people’s productivity and spending.

We need to start producing, and food is the obvious place to start. There is famine building throughout the region, and tourism is not going to change that. Where are his priorities?

We can’t afford leadership that is stuck in the neoliberal mindset of attracting foreign business and foreign tourists instead of producing food and energy. Neoliberalism has failed, so get with the program!

  18. 28. seeker of the truth and justice,

Where are these tourists going to come from? The US consumers can’t even drag themselves into the stores when electronic goods are being given away at cost only. They are deep in debt, thanks to neoliberal theory that strives for low interest rates so people can borrow, and doesn’t tax business, while outsourcing the public’s income from the manufacturing sector to low wage countries. China will get hit too, so don’t count on them as tourists in the next few years.

  19. #30 MrK, good to see you on LT apart from the private blogs on which you are prominent. Hope you enjoyed your Xmas and looking forward to ushering in the New Year despite the credit crunch. More on another forum m8.

  20. Hey Nine Chale

    #27

I like that! “Tax Payer’s Money” You ‘ve’ hit the nail right on its head. There was absolutely no need to take along the whole clan to Mfuwe.

This so called ‘ legacy’ is not doing us any good.Hope it wont continue.

  21. #25 Pinky
The visit Zambia campeign in a certain measure did achieve results.
The objective was to capture the spill over tourism market from Kenya and South Africa and be the alternative for tourists who had traditionally gone to Zimbabwe. It was also intended to highlight other tourism attraction areas in Zambia such as the northern circuit which includes north Luangwa. It was also intended to highlight Zambia as a Pristine and fresh destinationation as opposed to being a tired destination like Kenya.

  22. **==**==**==#19
    GOLYATI,
Thanks bigman for that mature explanation to my query, ican now forsee that zambia needs a lot to be developed!

HAPPY NEWYEAR,I will just drink chibuku, pantu naikosa

  23. #31 MrK, right on bruv. China has boomed because it has been the “workshop” of the western economies, manufacturing all sorts of rub.bish like MP3 players, plasma and LCD tvs, clothes for high street retailers such as M&S, toys for companies such as Mattel, etc, etc and now these goods have no market in the west. Wal-Mart is the biggest single company that outsources from China. The Chinese bubble is on its way to bursting in the economic downturn wind.

  24. #31 -You are right the credit crunch will affect tourism -but my point is that safari tourism on its own is a thing of the past. What are needed are new ways of attracting tourists. When was the last time a major conference was held in zambia. But Arusha in Tanzania is constantly bidding for these conferences and winning. They combine conferences with visits to the ngorogoro crater ,serengeti etc. It is a deliberate policy on their part to do this.

  25. Is our president aware of the much more anticipated adverse effects of the global financial crisis in 2009.We do not only warn but also encourage this clientelistic leaders and their advisers to put in place counter measure to cushion the bad effects the financial crisis. If anything, the problems the currently has been facing in the period the RBtook office can be mainly be attributed to bad ecconomic planning and misplaced priorities in government spendings.

  26. #14 Pinky
My apologies for the confusion.I started by using my usual console, I letter changed to another and forget to default the Name Golyati.

    Peace

  27. How i wish our presidents would start promoting our tourism industry by starting with visiting abandoned parks and reserves.

It will do us a lot of Good if better resorts that would receive guests like presidents where build in other national parks like Nsumbu.

By the way ba presido when are you starting visiting ba kamushi? We want to hear what they will have to say pali ili ilyashi lya credit fimofimo.

Zambia is the place to come, we have so much that can be developed and put into first class. All our politicians do is talk talk talk and no action. how many untapped waterfalls do we have in Zambia? our ministers have travelled and we have not seen them try to put what they see in other countries at least in place here. ala mwandi! Kaya!

  29. Excellent. Finally something is being said and done about this lovely place, it’s been a long time coming and a struggle! South Luangwa is one of the best national parks in the world because it hasn’t been hasn’t gone throgh the bastardization of weird commercial construction like in our neighbouring countries.

ZAWA should do their best to maintain the beaurty rather than have ugly hotels and concrete ruining the landscape. Concrete doesn’t equate to more tourists. More lodges should be built using natural materials from the area , plus there are some other parks, which need to be promoted as well. So many rangers have lost their lives fighting poachers they should be remembered.

  30. Iwe akulu mpuno, toad faced creature wake up from your sleep.you cant run zed using guess work strategies, try and error and all those day dreams.you claim to have studied development. This time malume things are bad, people cutting on expenditure, concetrating on needs(food) not luxuries(tourism) and finding ways of making more money.cut short your game viewing and concetrate on sustainable development strategies.you are not yet nalibombele.

  31. What happy ? Repair Zimba – Livingstone road if you want to talk about tourism. What happy ? Maybe he is talking about how lecker game meat is… Shame !

  32. Travel will become cheaper as agencies fight for customers. Eco-tourism is something people are looking at these days. There are many projects tied to these lodges especially in South Luangwa and it may work. RB isn’t the only person happy with South Luangwa. Just google it and look at the reviews. The Miombo forest and their bee keepers’fair trade honey is selling in of the upmarket supermarkets here and let me tell you, it’s great stuff, an example of another gem.

I can’t understand why certain Zambians have to be so damn negative about EVERYTHING. Do a bit research before opening mouths and unleashing verbal diarrhoea on the rest of us. RB is now the scape goat, typical.

  33. #50 Anonymous

Rest is not a luxury it is a need,if you have to concertrate on your so called “sustainable developement strategies” you need to do it in a place which is tranquil and peaceful. You also need to do so with a fresh rested brain. I would advise you to take some rest then you won’t have to send confused, shallow, irrelevant contributions such as yours.

  34. 32 & 37 ako kanono ba nevers,

Thank you very much, and the same blessings to you.

” The Chinese bubble is on its way to bursting in the economic downturn wind. ”

Right, the consumer who has been supporting chinese products is going to stop buying that too, as well as cars and homes. However, China can always expand it’s economy inwards. It has an internal market of 1.3 billion people, with a single currency and only 2 languages spoken. And they have Japan on their doorstep, which is a world leading economy. So they’re not putting their hope in tourism. 🙂 What we need in Zambia, is to start producing things people need – food, clothes, waterpumps and infrastructure.

  35. # 51 please dont talk about Zimba – Livingstone Road, it makes me sick and more because i am supposed to be going to Lstone in the coming week. **==

  36. 11 Golyati. I have been to the following parks: Kafue (nanzhila plains in the south and busanga plains in the north), lonchivar, Lower Zambezi, Mosi-oa-Tunya and your favourite south Luangwa. Which ones have you visited? I still repeat my assertion. Every President from Kaunda has behaved like the Luangwa is the only park worth a presidential retreat. The other parks are worth visiting and promoting too. liuwa is the only place in the world where you find blue wilderbeest. Nsumbu has the largest crocodiles in Africa. Kasanka has the biggest concentration of Sitatunga. Bangweulu swamps the only place with the shoebill. Let us spread the devt.

  37. The economic down turn in Zambia will have an impact on our exports that is for sure. But, this is only a temporal setback. Why cant the govt in the meantime pump in most of our money from the debt relief to promote SME to cushion the export companies so that at least their production is sustained? Obviously, most Zambians do not rely in credit because they live on their earnings and whatever they can extract from any donor. The mines don’t need to close completely as the SME could cushion them from the temporary cash flow problems arising from dwindling copper prices. Start thinking and stop polticking like SATA, mukashalilila!!

  38. Um, RB won the election this October past so in which time was he going to fix this Livingstone Road? Best to blame Govt rather than an individual n’est ce pas? Instead of money going to Mr. Bastile perhaps our former vertically challnged President should’ve fixed the road as well as the infrastrucuture in the country. Don’t blame RB for what we all know should’ve been repaired in the Chiluba years. The fixed Kafue Road in the ’90s so why didn’t they continue and go to Livingstone. Greed of the ’90s is what delayed development not RB in his 2 months as president.

  39. #48 shuster, ilse mwanza, that illustrious woman whom zambians know little about, has been doing a census of the country’s waterfalls and at the last count she counted no less than 65! these waterfalls are just as magnificent to behold as the victoria falls.

  40. #Mbulawa let him assist by starting with the Basics
Tourism is defined as the movement of people from their usual places of work and residence to another place .During their stay they must not engage in any income generating activity. The Visit must be for more than twenty 24 hours but less than one year.

  41. I wonder if Miyanda, Sata, Hichilema, or indeed Mwanawasa(may his soul rest in peace) could have gone on holiday if they were presindents at such a time as this when the country is experiencing job losses, high food prices, just to mention but a few! :-w:-w:-w:-w:-w:-w:-w

  42. #63 Yes they would have gone on holiday. They have to rest, that is the only time that they can rest and it isn’t really rest as they are briefed constantly. We don’t want another LPM, Ariel Sharon situation. Even Presidents need rest. Besides it’s not as if he’s gone abroad. Mfuwe has been the normal holiday destination for Presidents since KK. It’s only a few days’ rest. If people aren’t careful, they’ll cuase themselves injury through the venom and bitterness they harbour for RB. He can’t holiday at State House because he would be disturbed. Camp David, Balmoral, Windsor, Chequers. Every head of state has to go on holiday they aren’t immortal.

  43. does himm being happy with the park warrant him carring the whole clan using tax payers money instead of channekling that money to sort ouot the cries of many Zambians

  44. 62 Golyati what exactly are you responding to? To start with you claimed (your post in 11) that I have never visited any park in Zambia other than amusement parks. In response I have listed the parks I have been to. So what isthis nonsense about the definition of tourism? Is it in dispute? If you have nothing sensible to say my dear its better to shut up rather than expose yourself as an empty scatter brain…..(say anything, write anything as long as I have a keyboard; it does not matter whether my contributions are illogical or not)! And I thought English was your second language!

  45. At the Zambian embassy here in Pretoria, there are still posters encouraging tourists to view the eclipse of sun(2001)in Zambia.

  46. I am just wondering what the people who are so injured by the holiday the president took are thinking about.
Much as there are different pressures in the country mostly economical, the president does need a holiday.
Effectiveness is not about working throughout but about being efficient.
HR people will tell you that there is a relationship between taking a rest and being efficient at delivering at work.
Let us assume that Chiluba had never gone on leave for 10 years, do you think that was going to give better output?
I like being realistic; yes I love to question many things but some things are quite obvious, we all need rest.

  47. #66 Mbulawa Cont…

For a tourism destination to develope and attract tourists it needs to have Attractions(Primary),Amenities,Accomodation and accesibility of the right standard and quality .

  48. this is what chinese ambasador wrote in the visitors book …” sank you lupiah bando for seeing animal o. but one china policy is wanting sambia government to including ze cat and ze dog here so dat lot of chinese comrades come to sambia to hunting good animals o”

  49. #69. Ba Mr Fine.
You are right in everything you have said. Everyone needs a break. RB has gone through alot this year, starting with LPM being in hospital and then His death and the elections. He deserves a break for him to take the country forward. We need to suport our president untill the next elections. Then we can say we gave you our support but you didn’t peform according to our expections so you can leave Sir. For now he needs our support and encouragment.

  50. Geee!!! This is the problem we have here in Zambia, same resting places for all Presidents. Why cant they try and test other game parks, or tap into other areas in the the Northern Provinces or Luapula? There is a lot to promote in this country, than Mfuwe all the time.

They should ask Caristo Chitamfya about some of the best pleasure resorts.

Even the old Ndeke Presidential Guest House can be turned into a pleasure resort.

  51. Mfuwe is the best in zambia.go and see for your self you will not even wish to come back, uzaona ati kansi!!! :x:x:x:x:x:x:x:x:x:x:x:x:x:x:x:x

  52. #69 Fine. How many leave days does a president get in one month. Mostly in Zambia employees get 2days per each month worked or 1 1/2 days. This guy just like Chilling. He is typical zedia zoo ona!!!. Most zedian like chilling than working.

  53. Ladies and Gentlemen,

We(group of Zambians) are starting a company in the UK to market Zambia as a tourist destination. We would like to hear any ideas of how we can tap into the UK market. Somebody mentioned Zambia not featuring on UK high streets compared to South Africa and Kenya, how can we make Zambia feature more with travel agents on UK high streets? Any comments and suggestions are welcome. One blogger called Peter, we would like to hear the ideas you had for marketing Zambia in the UK as well.

Thank you for reading and happy 2009 and beyond.

  54. After having a good time with Thandiwe in the park, what else does the nation expect of him? Ofcoase to be happy.

    Chinda Law Association,
    Upcoming President :o:o

  55. Comments from Fine and Golyati never stop amusing. One would think there is nothing wrong in Zed really.

It is sad they only use the net at work.

    #68 That is funny! :d:d:d:d:d:d:d:d:d:d:d:d:d:d:d:d:d:d.

I bet it will work when we have another eclipse in how many years? Nothing wrong though. Zambia is alright and doing very well[-(

  56. #79 Anon. what would be in it for me if I gave you my ideas? And how do we get in touch? Of course not on an open forum like this probably run from the Red Brick on chimanga Road in Lusaka.

  57. #79. How do you expect us to give you ideas when you are anynomous??? Give some contact address or email. And you still surprised that Zambia’s tourism is in the doldrums when people like you who want to correct the situation forget the basics like a contact address :-w:-??

  58. I like this forum I encourage all the Zedians Let us begin to contribute in getting back from these leaders and many years of misrule by doing the following; 1. Run for Parliament help to come with laws which make sense in the economic running of the country 2. Open businesses at the cutting edge business which brings change e.g salaries and a work culture which rewards hardworking.Zambia is a land of opportunities, Zambia is a land flowing with milk and honey.

  59. #4 That very offendive, mind you he is our President. No, you are off track bro. mind your language towards the sitting president.

  60. #4 That very offensive, mind you he is our President. No, you are off track bro. mind your language towards the sitting president.

  61. Other national parks and game reserves in other provinces should be highlighted as well! Or is someone taking advantage coz he’s from the east?
