Immigration officers urged to be courteous to foreigners

Share

Home Affairs Permanent Secretary Ndiyoi Mutiti has urged the Immigration Department to implement President Rupiah Banda’s call for the officers to be courteous to foreign nationals entering the country.

Mrs. Mutiti said President Banda’s call during his recent address to parliament should be implemented by the immigration officers because they are the first contact persons at points of entry into the country.

Mrs. Mutiti said this at the official closure of the 2009 annual senior and regional immigration officers’ conference where she also launched the Immigration Department HIV/AIDS work place policy in Siavonga last evening.

She reiterated the need for the officers to reflect the Zambian hospitality to people entering the country at border check points as it is key to attracting investments and tourists into the country.

Mrs. Mutiti however cautioned the immigration officers to be firm with illegal immigrants and reduce the number of illegal immigrants by taking proactive measures.

She noted that Zambia is surrounded by neighboring countries that are currently facing political instability hence the need to safe guard points of entry from foreign nationals that might want to enter the country illegally for safety.

Mrs. Mutiti assured the department of government’s continued support to enable it help, maintain national security and collect revenue on behalf of government.

And speaking earlier, Acting Chief Immigration Officer Anderson Phiri noted that HIV/AIDS workplace will help fight stigma and promote interaction on HIV/AIDS issues among the officers.

Mr. Phiri said there is need to reduce stigma in workplaces and encourage access to treatment in order to maintain productivity.

He commended government for its continued efforts and commitment to fight the HIV/AIDS pandemic through the introduction of the HIV/AIDS workplace policy.

  1. Those who have crossed borders know how important it is to be treated with respect.

In other words, immigrants also deserve to be l-)

  2. How about being courteous to Zedians coming back home from abroad too? Often times we are harassed by immigration officers who demand that we open all our pieces of luggage and show them piece by piece what we have come with. I think that is absurd and it must be condemned at all costs. If a person does not have anything to declare, leave them alone please.

Sorry I seemed to have abandoned you on the other thread. I had to go ku saloon but am hopeful you managed to hold our end of the discussion

One minute they are smilling with you, the next ba kulonga muma cell.
They need to be tactical, thats all.

  6. Please tell them (immigrants) to respect the laws of the Land otherwise deport them right at the port of entry :d/:d/:d/:d/:d/

  7. The last time I visited Cote d’Ivoire, I was treated badly. May the Govt be harsh on all nationals from that country. Amen…

  8. its true, its only in order to treat people with respect ala in some countries awe sure fye you just reach pa baorder you even begin developing goose pimples coz of the way the officers are handling you, zedian officers should not be like that

  10. Transport and Communications minister Dora Siliya has revealed that Post Newspaper owner and Editor Fred Mmembe had applied to buy shares in Zamtel.

Ms. Siliya told parliament Friday that Mr. Mmembe approached the ministry over the matter and also over another matter of acquiring a licence to operate a mobile phone company.

Ms. Siliya said her ministry rejected the offer.

Ms. Siliya was speaking in parliament when the issue of engaging RP partners of Cayman Islands to value the assets of Zamtel came under scrutiny.

Ms Siliya said no law or procedure was broken.

The Post Newspaper has been running stories on the matter stating that Ms. Silya flouted procedure and ignored man

  11. #2 what do you mean especially Congolese and Zim.They are so many zed people in Congo ,Congolese treat them with respect and welcome them unlike you, shame on you.

  12. #19 — it is not a HE, it’s a SHE. It’s clear in the story. Anyway my point was that I thought our immigration guys are already courteous as it is. How much more courteous does she want them to be? Does she want them to be kissing each and every visitor? They are a law enforcement wing of government, not a hotel reception. Be real!

  13. Not just foreigners.Even their fellow zambians.Enter any govt office, everybody has a screw x( on their face as though you’ve come to ask for a favour from them when it’s their job to attend to you.x(x(x(x(x(

I am looking good-to-eat even if I say so myself. Ulu lwakuba manless, nobody to appreciate me except myself. So yeah.
But hey, there still isn’t anything at the other end. Am monitoring like a hawk. Try again dear

  16. #23, I’m not surprised. For Fred Mmembe it’s just a matter of time before reality catches up with him. No single citizen is more powerful than the collective country they belong to. Since Mwanawasa’s death he has been using his newspaper to target individuals whom he thinks he can bring down. Fred is a very much PHD kind of person, and has always been like that. It’s just that people don’t actually know him. From nowhere he started supporting Sata during the by-elections, the chap he had spent his entire life campaigning against. But we all know he did that just to spite RBB because RBB had taken the Post and Fred to court in a defamation case just before the elections. Fred is cheap!

  17. ‘Mrs. Mutiti said this at the official closure of the 2009 annual senior and regional immigration officers’ conference where she also launched the Immigration Department HIV/AIDS work place policy in Siavonga last evening.’

    more money in their pockets…[-([-(:-?

  18. The officers are so nice, when i was first comming here, i didnt know that i needed to pay depature fee, one officer paid for me, cos i was broke.

So please leave my officers alone.

    Tiyeni uko panse.

  19. Just employ good looking chicks…and every foreigner will be smilling.

    On Dora enganging RP of Cayman Inslands.. first of all what country is this???? see what I picked from google;

‘Cayman Islands has a population of 47,862 note: most of the population lives on Grand Cayman (July 2008 est.).

This country is smaller than luwingu!!! How do we expect RP to know about telecoms?? This is a scandal!!!!

  20. R Back
What proper treatment of foreigners by Congolese are you talking about? Those guys think that they owe us a living and that our very existence depends on them. What with their Katanga gov’nor. If Zambia were a man, one would say Katumbi (small dead body) has Zambia by the b a l l s

  21. Most of them are illitrate drunk womanizers. They want 4/4s instead of tractors. Most of those cars are now damaged. Apart from wanting freeeee money , what developmental issues do these pipo deal with ?. It was FJT who started bribing them to make their subjects vote for him.
They are only a handfull of usefull chiefs. The rest are all illitare drunks. How can you hope to have illitreate pipo leading developmental issues ?.

  22. From what I have noticed Zambian immigration is only discourteous and beligerant to Zambian nationals within and from abroad. They are actually very polite and nice to foreigners(mainly from overseas) from what I have seen. This is probably why some munzungu’s love Zambia because they are treated like demigods . They usually treat people according to how much bribes in whatever form they can get.

  23. This kind of attitude does not help in any way. take a flight bill clinton airport in abuja and you will recieve the worst treatment. just chirundu border see how those zimbo officers treat zambians, try negotiating with an immigration officer in JHB. we have to be selective with courtesy. when we go to play football in west africa what happens ? its tit for tat !

  29. Guys dont you find it supprising that Zambian politians always talk petty. If the presido got some complaints, he must call upon the minister concerned and make it really firm to him that immig. policies have to be followed. These fray statements dont do any good but only watses space on paper and increases the number of un necessary information entering our ears???. We are looking for time when people would be serious.

  30. MAtworld
A happy and special valentine’s day for you. If there is anybody who really deserves it, ndiwe. Come ladies, lets join in wishing Matworld a Happy happy valentine’s day kaya ngati azankhala na ndani.

  31. Yes Brother matworld!
That’s it. It’s not by mighty nor by power that we are alive today. It’s by his grace and mercy which surpass human understanding. God is good.

Even as we celebrate Valentines day tomorrow, lets remember that He will be watching whatever and wherever we will be. Happy valentine indeed to all the bloggers.

  32. When are we going to hear of some real substance from the people who claim to be briliant leaders and popular. All we hear is that any company that is run by GRZ and parastatal is doomed to failure. Are we not capable of running these things??. If such problems are visible at that level then it must be worse in GRZ ministries. These problems are a reflection of the incompetence in GRZ though they will never admit. In fact that foreign company must evaluate GRZ and not only Zamtel????

  33. Tell me the name of the country where immigration officlas are polite to you? none! i have lived/travelled to 13 countries and in each of them at the end of my stay i glad to leave because the immis have a horrible attitude!

  34. Illigal immigrants and real bad people dont even use boarder posts to enter countries. Even if they did, I think they would be more smart than what immigration officers would think???

  42. Immigration officers or is it clerks should be courteous to all not just to foreigners. The system of talking on the cellular phones and ignoring arrivals and those leaving the country at Kazungula Border Post for instance, should end. There are some very rude and irritating fellows who are tarnishing the entire workforce. Next time I will photograph one using my polaroid camera lens. They better beware for I am sure to catch one off guard! The Post can then expose them

  64. 196 Ba Honey,

I enjoyed the Irish pub at Manda Hill. I think it was called O’Hanaghan’s? There’s also a beautiful restaurant at Arcades which was run by an Asian couple then. They serve very nice delicacies, even shrimps.

Another favorite spot was the coffee shop along Cairo Road, near the Main Post Office, I think they call it Central Park.
They have the most aromatic coffee I’ve ever tasted. Nothing here can compare! Serious!
Should I go on? I’m now getting homesick!

  65. 210. Nine Chale

Go on please go on and on and on, this sounds good, i miss home too.
What about that pub pa Arcades?
    I went there once

  66. “Mrs. Mutiti however cautioned the immigration officers to be firm with illegal immigrants and reduce the number of illegal immigrants by taking proactive measures.”

This is great but let it be extended to all people coming to Zambia. There is no need to make a distinction between foreigners by giving them classes.

Whoever is a foreign is a foreigner and MUST be treated according to the same law. There is no need to treat Zimbabweans, Congelese from Congo DR or Nigerians more strickly while letting South Africans, Europeans or USA Citizens MUST be treated as even better than indigenous Zambians.

I hope this will land on ears that listen in our GRZ ranks.

  67. Ba Honey

I think I know which pub you mean at Arcades. I once just passed thru and so a lot of young people drinking there but I decided not to join them because I thought they were too young.
The place me and my mates liked to drink the most was Chrismar Hotel on Fridays, with live music from The No Parking Band. Ala cale lila!
I wonder if they still do those gigs.
Now you really got me homesick! How I miss those days! Wa mona nomba!!!:-t

  74. I have no problem with the Zambia immigration officers, cos i rearly talk to them, as my papers are always upto date. All i do is present my passport and they do their things and the only complaint is that they take to long writing and i wish they had computers!

  75. Is it real or is it just an illusion I’m having that this LT is now full of WOMEN? That’s why we can’t have a serious discussion!!! HEY YOU WOMEN ON THIS LT, listen, this is NOT A CHAT ROOM for your trivial kitchen gossip. Try facebook or the latest now called TWITTER. This LT is for serious manly discussion about serious issues raised in news stories about our country. If you don’t like what I have just said, please go to sleep… I’m fed up with you.

  76. The Immigration dept is one Dept which needs a complete overhaul. It is polluted with alot of corrupt officers especially junior officers that are border based. This is attributed to the big number of illegal immigrants in the country who have become so big headed. Of course not all of them are corrupt but some. High presence of PIs in a country is a Threat to National Security. As they live with you they identify the weaknesses, organise and strike.

  77. I am a zambian, i was mistreated by the immigartion officers in 2004 at kabwe. they alleged that i was not a zambian cause i could not speak to them in a zambian language…..

  78. And that is why we need dual citizenship because these IO are rude more especially to zambians who now hold foeign passports. i detect a level of jealousy:d/

  79. The immigrations are a disgrace coz they think zedians are weak, fragile, desparate and cant take them to court, their hostility can tell and they want to be felt instead of performing their duties. **==[-x

  80. What i don’t realize is in fact how you are no longer actually much more well-liked than you might be right now. You are very intelligent. You understand thus significantly with regards to this subject, made me for my part consider it from a lot of numerous angles. Its like women and men aren’t interested until it?s one thing to do with Lady gaga! Your personal stuffs excellent. Always maintain it up!
