PF will not take action against its two fighting MPs

PF spokesperson Given Lubinda said the fight between Mrs Chitika-Mulobeka and Mrs Mumbi in Parliament on Friday was unacceptable and disappointing, but that the opposition party would not take any action against them.

Mr Lubinda said the party regretted the dishonourable conduct by it’s MPs and urged other members not to trade on that path.

“We regret the scuffle at Parliament involving the two MPs. We don’t want to encourage dishonorable behaviour among our members, and members of Parliament for that matter. These are women, as you are aware society holds women in high esteem,” Mr Lubinda said.

He said it was unacceptable that women should undress each other through fights, when society holds them in high esteem.

Mr Lubinda, who is MP for Kabwata, said although he was not at Parliament on Friday, information gathered from the PF Chief Whip, Yamfwa Mukanga and a few MPs that were around, indicates that Mrs Chitika-Mulobeka provoked Mrs Phiri.

Mr Lubinda said that Mrs Phiri was allegedly provoked because of her decision to abide by the party position not to participate in the National Constitution Conference (NCC).

“I am informed that Honourable Phiri was actually provoked because she is among those MPs that have decided to follow the party’s position on the NCC. It’s totally unacceptable behaviour,” he said.

Mr Lubinda said he and other MPs that have decided to go by the party’s position on NCC have been subjected to unwarranted provocation by their colleagues who have decided to sit on the NCC.

Mrs Chitika-Mulobeka and 15 other PF MPs have agreed to sit on the NCC against the party’s blessings.

However, Mr Lubinda urged MPs who have taken opposing positions on the matter to respect one another’s freedom of choice.

“Let those who went to the NCC and those who decided to follow the party’s position not to be on each other’s throat. What I am saying is: can we allow each other to enjoy our freedom of choice. We should not allow jungle mentality to override our human dignity,” Mr Lubinda said.

He said the PF would not take any action on the matter but would allow the law to take its course.

Mrs Phiri has opened a docket for Mrs Chitika-Mulobeka at Woodlands Police Station, although police say it would let the National Assembly handle the matter since the scuffle happened within Parliament premises.

  23. It is embarrassing that female MPs should behave as though they are in primary school, and appalling that their political party should choose inaction for a response. There is nothing humorous about this – PF should address the matter in a more mature manner.

The whole issue of conduct should be dealt with within parliament through a transparent code of conduct with clearly defined end rigorously enforced sanctions for those who breach its provisions, which in a case such as this, should include expulsion from parliament and a heavy fine for their party. We would soon see some major improvements in general behavior from such malcontents.

    Mr Given Lubinda, when has PF ever respected opposing views? That is like mixing water with oil. It cannot happen. Even on this blog, PF cadres attack anyone who has an opposing view on SATA. It cannot happen. PF cadres have no respect for other individuals especially those with opposing views.

    Mr Given Lubinda, when are you ever going to take action? This is not the first fight PF has been involved in. PF has shown indiscipline since it as enacted by stopping ZANIS vehicles, fighting when trying to verify votes, etc etc.

  65. Lubinda is right, this could have been avoided if the speaker had followed the court’s ruling and expelled the PF MPs from parliament. There are now two factions, one genuinely PF and other claiming to PF be under the protection of Mwanamwambwa even though the courts said they were rightfully expelled.   99. Police is behaving fanny. The law on offences is clear and it says any person who causes assault occasioning actual bodily harm is gulty of an offence. It does not matter whether at parliament, in the church but anywhere in Zed. What is the purpose of opening a docket if the law does not allow? Police should do their part. What if one of them died or dies within a few months as a result of injuries from the fight? Mr. Kapeso should read what the law says before passing a statement. The fact that they opened a docket means they are dealing with the matter, Kapeso can not say the matter will be dealt with Parliament at this stage beacause parliament has not delibrated on the matter.

  161. Assault is not a matter of misconduct but a criminal office to be handled by State Police and not Parliment. Let the Police handle the assault part while disciplinary action can be handled by National Assembly using its processes and procedures. Aother 500 will be on standby, imagine all these Police officers because of one PF. When UPND petitioned the 2001 results we never had such a situation.
