Deputy Information and Broadcasting Minister Elijah Muchima says government is in the process of repealing the piracy and counterfeit act to curb illegal products on the local market.
Speaking during an on the spot check of seized pirated goods worth billions of Kwacha by the Anti Piracy Crack Squad (APCS) at Nakonde border post, Mr. Muchima said pirated products should not be tolerated as they have the potential of denting the country’s economy.
He said there is need for stiffer punishment on piracy because of its ability to cause instability to the country’s economy and warned long distance carriers to desist from conniving with smugglers of counterfeited products.
Mr.Muchima urged them to join government’s efforts to curb piracy by ensuring that passengers declare the contents of their luggage before boarding their buses.
He commended the APCS for its consistent efforts in fighting the vice.
And speaking earlier, Intellectual Property Specialist Kingsley Nkonde said Africa is being targeted as a market for counterfeited and pirated products because of its porous borders.
Mr. Nkonde said Zambia, in particular, has a big challenge in curbing smuggling of counterfeit products because of its vast porous boundaries with other countries.
If piracy laws worked in Zambia then the chinese would have left a long time ago because of lack of business. From the music to clothes to even medicines, I wonder why this is only an issue now
Corruption is everywhere thats why we will always have this piracy problem
Kapirimposhi is another eyesore with counterfeit goods.
There definitely is need for stiffer laws to deter people from trading in pirated products. The damage to the industry and the economy is quite significant under current laws.
As long as people don’t have enough money to afford the authentic premium brands, they will always opt for a cheaper alternative. This is what keeps piracy alive.
Here in Germany, I have never come accross any counterfeit products because of the purchasing power of consumers. Nobody would buy them.
Nine Chale correct me if am wrong but didn’t Ebay have a court case on the amount of counterfeit goods being peddled in germany? I actually remember an article where $1.6 billion worth of counterfiet goods being seized in germany.
My understanding is that Zambian Musicians actually give their music to prirating companies for a qucik spin over. Ironic Ha!!!
Nine Chale
Awe, I am always downloading illegal softwares, Music, movies, etc from German websites free of charge unless you say that’s not piracy.
My understanding is that Zambian Musicians actually give their music to pirating companies for a quick spin over. Ironic Ha!!!
Piracy can never end. It is practically impossible to stop it. Only the unluck ones will be caught.
#6 Slumdog & # 8 Bafuna… you’re both probably right. It is not easy to control the products offered online and that is why people buy at their own risk. What I was referring to is the range of products on the public German market. You will definately never find any counterfeit products in Media Markt, Globus, Rewe, Aldi or LIDL. These companies spend millions in prtecting their image and ensuring that their products are authentic. That is why they will even compensate you with a huge sum if you happen to buy counterfeit products from them.
First of all Piracy has been going on for a long time and that is what needs to be controlled, not changing the act. I do not know what the act says but i believe that the act somewhat warns against such activities. Therefore, repealing the act will not change anything..what should be done is enforcing measures aimed at reducing the illegal activities.
The $1.6 billion wasn’t from online business it was from the german consumer public. I don’t need to remind you of the fake good stalls in Berlin with fake armani and chanel do I? Piracy is worldwide the only place where there is no priracy is that antarctic.
Bakose sana pali piracy. More difficult to control than corruption, ka.
Piracy and Corruption are both bad but in my opinion i dnt see any of the two been eliminated or wiped up becoz all this is coming frm the top management(RB n the crew) So legalize them after all….Piracy is best for me in terms of music but for the rest no no no
There were DVD’s of Barack Obama’s Inauguration just a day after his inaguration ceremony was aired on DSTV’s MM1!!!At Manda Hill ka!!!lol!Awe mwandi smthin must b done URGENTLY!!!
This is what they call free advertising, they pay , but indirectly. At the end of the both parties win.
The Chineese are the worst when it omes to pairacy, these pipo can make any thing and sell it . They even make their own body doubles. So be careful.
what about the fake liquor they confiscated from Kanyama , the next day it was back on the black market being sold for less the black market.
As students in China, we survive due to piracy. Genuine product are so expensive that it would take you a whole year of saving to buy a computer. Anyway, what the hell, like someone said “the Chinese know copyright as the right to copy”. For them they have a right to copy anything and sell it. Large firms selling counterfeit products belong to top govt officials.
For Zambia, lets look at ways of empowering these guys producing counterfeit products to be producing genuine products and make them pay tax. The piracy companies in China do pay tax and employ the most people. So you see, it works well for the people and the government
