Zambia National marketeers Association (ZANAMA) in Kitwe has refuted claims by PF spokesperson Given Lubinda that the association had been abusing marketeers and collecting money from them illegally.
ZANAMA Chairman Elvis Nkandu told ZANIS today in an interview that the objective of the association was to meet the interests and concerns of the marketers in order to improve their living standards.
“What Mr. Lubinda said is very untrue and embarrassing because we aim at protecting the interests of he marketeers to better their living standard Mr. Nkandu said.
Mr. Nkandu explained that every member of the association as well as the marketeers had an obligation to review their membership to snow their commitment to the association.
He added that the marketeers had the mandate to renew their membership under the societies Act.
Mr. Nkandu advised Mr. Lubinda not to comment on issues that he did not fully understand.
He urged Mr. Lubinda to devote time talking about developmental issues in the nation and not attacking ZANAMA.
“He needs to devote his time challenging the MMD government on issues that could bring development on issues that could bring development to the nation and not spend time attacking ZANAMA he said.
Mr. Nkandu noted that Mr. Lubinda should verify the statements that he makes by substantiating them with what is on the ground.
Earlier, Mr. Lubinda challenged the Patriotic Front (PF) leadership in the Copperbelt province to ensure that it sorted out the hooliganism at Chisokone market where ZANAMA was allegedly said to be terrorizing marketeers by collecting money from them illegally.
ZANIS
Power to the maketiyalas!
True they have been collecting money from the marketeers illegally. There is alot of politicking that goes on at Chisokone market and I have had first hand experience. Historically the daily levies have been collected but the council but that has been shifted to ZANAMA to the detriment of the council. Elvis can not say that they try to better the lives of the marketeers when the filthy and deprolable state of the market is a health hazard. ZANAMA collects and council is supposed to repair whatever damage. In Zambia logic/conscience or ubuntu is easiliy defied but greedness almost at all levels starting from homes.

ELVIS WE KNOW WHY YOU HAVE NOT LET OTHER PEOPLE TAKE OVER FROM YOU. REMEMBER WHEN MRS MASEBO WANTED TO TRANSFER THE SYSTEM TO LOCAL COUNCILS? YOU DECIDED TO CAMPAIN FOR MMD SO THAT YOU COUD KEEP THE STATUS QUO. KALILO BA ELVIS NO 2 WAYS ABOUT THAT
Surely the ZANAMA staff has gone on for too long. The so-called ZANAMA Chairman Elvis Nkandu and his henchmen are just thieves in broad day light and nobody ha s a care. These people collect money in levy form when this should be done by the councils. I have been to their office on several occassions and the chaps even have bodyguards. How can such lawlessness be left to continue when councils can use these levies to good cause. Elvis and his henchmen have enriched themselves for too long and comes has come for councils to take over the running of the markets.
#5 You are right! Councils should run the markets so that we can all benefit, not just some little so so from Mansa in patapatas and now driving you know what.
What is the council doing about these levies being collected illegally by these thugs. Is there someone giving them a mandate so that he benefits at the end of the day or are the councils neglecting their responsibilities so they just sun bath outside their office and make some allowances attending workshops. Lazy councils must work up and take charge of their markets
