Algeria Hand Zambia The Challenge

Share

Algeria’s 3-1 home win over Egypt on Sunday has set up the prospect of a sellout match when the Desert Foxes visit Zambia on June 20 in both sides third 2010 qualifier Group C match at Konkola Stadium in Chililabombwe.

Algeria and Zambia share 4 points after two games but the former lead Group C on goal difference after they maintained their 46-year-unbeaten home record against Egypt with their rout of the African champions.

They ousted overnight leaders Zambia from the top of Group C who won 1-0 at home against Rwanda on Saturday at Konkola.

A win for either side will put them in the driving seat on the coveted road to South Africa in June next year.

Moreover, Zambia has an old score to settle with Algeria after suffering a rare home defeat when they met on July 25, 1985.

Incidentally the match was also a World Cup qualifier this time on the road to the 1986 finals in Mexico that the ended 1-0 in a third-round tie that saw Algeria progress to the final qualifying round 3-0 on aggregate.

Meanwhile, Egypt downfall against Algeria away in Blida over the weekend began a minute after the hour-mark when striker Karim Matmou of German Bundesliga side Borussia Mönchengladbach put the hosts ahead.

Striker Abdelkader Ghazal from Italian Serie A club Sienna made it 2-0 just four minutes later before his attacking partner Rafik Djebbour of Greek side AEK Athens made it 3-0 in 77 minutes.

Al Ahly midfielder Mohamed Aboutrika scored Egypt’s consolation goal in the 87th as the pressure on the early favorites to qualify from Group C begins to bare down on them for an elusive third World Cup appearance.

  1. Algeria’s coach was crying before the game against Egypt. This was his game gimmick to make the Pharaohs of Egypt under rate his team. I hope HR knows what is at stake in the game between the Zambia and Algeria. Suold Algeria defend in search for a draw Zambia must attach 100%. Hopefully the Algerians will be beaten. The game at Konkola after next this coming weekend is a cup final for Zambia. HR start with Mulenga upfront and Fwayo Tembo.

  2. Watching Egypt draw Zambia gave me hope that we have a chance to qualify this time around.
Egypt loss to Algeria every enhances that hope. However, Zambia needs to score by more than one goal this time around and hope not to concede. Our front line is blunt and the midfield does not support more of the attack. I am sure we can beat Algeria considering that they struggled with Rwanda away from home. Banayeni bane.

  3. Comparing the two matches puts Zambia at a disadvantage, So the coach need to make critical decisions if we have to overrun Algeria. However, Zambia will definately carry the day if only we are consolidated upfront. Go Zambia Go

  4. We’re coming for the win or tie,so don’t expect us lay around or wait for you to score….We are coming in full force fellas, who ever do well in this game would be in South Africa .Good luck Zambia and go Algeria go!!!

  5. #3Omar – Yeah, we expect you to lay on your backs and get done by the big boys! Did you honestly think chipolopolo meant copepr bullets??? Viva Zed, 1-0. Are you a zambian living in algeria???

  6. Algeria has better quality players than Zambia. They all play for european clubs. The only disadvantage against Zambia will be the pitch which is very bad. It is so difficult to predict the score so we have to wait and see. I hope it will be on Algeria’s favour

  7. i BELIEVE WE HAVE A TEAM THAT CAN BEAT THE DESERT FOXES. WE JUST NEED TO WORK ON THE FRONT LINE ( FORGET MBESUMA ) AND WE SHALL DO IT

  8. Ok emotions aside, Algeria are a good team and have quality. It will be tricky to win and we must use every resource in our favour.

First let our boys train on that hard and useless Chililabombwe pitch and get used to it. No Camping in South Africa where there are good pitches. Let them practice on that hard pitch and master the pitch. Algeria will certainly struggle on that Konkola pitch. That is something in our favour.

Second, pliz pliz pliz, forget FAT BOY Mbesuma. Save him for practice matches and friendlies. That boy is just too slow and easily gave away alot balls and we don’t need that against Algeria. And don’t mean to turn this thread into a FAT BOY Mbesuma thread. Yes I heard he apologised. But hey no sorry after death. If possible lets play the team that played in…

  9. Algeria don’t scare me. Just because they beat Egypt 3-1 doesn’t mean anything. Since when did they become a powerhouse? They have been performing below par way before Zambia. Bring them here, we’ll teach them Zambian football. The goal difference between us is just 1 goal. We have a hard pitch advantage as well.

  10. Whether Algeria is good, people lets give our boys hope, i have never seen a person supporting an enemy instead of his own o his own, its does not mean that if you go out zambia then you are not zambian. lets us be proud of our own.

  11. I have a proposal. let zambia play all home games in south africa and believe you me we will thump any team…..

  12. ha ha ha so we are putting our luck y on the pitch? if they say looking for greener pasture forget konkola is brown pasture. Ulukungu mu pitch awe mwe and they say Zambia has a lot of water in the region. That manhole which the sabc kept showing was not goood enough. Ok if we will win because of the pitch be rest assured the Egypt will have her day at konkola, reasons most players play for al ahly who have played in worst pitches during the caf club champions.

  13. Algeria will go down…they should play this game at independence stadium because only people from Lusaka support football with passion and violence

  14. It is my prayer that we can make with Algeria this time around in Zambia. But will matter are the players, which game they will offer to us at home. I watched the game for Algeria vs Egypt and it was a good game. Now we have to wait for our game too, who knows who will care the day. This time it is not predicting over a game. But how we are going to play and how much effort we shall offer for that games will matter. We have good determined players of which I hope we can use them well for the coming game. All the best for our team with a blessing from God which we are asking for on behalf of them. Losing this opportunity them it means we don’t know if we shall make it in future for the World Cup. Go Zambia Go…………………………………………

  15. Don’t understand our new found camp-house in SA. Thot it waz a one off thing, but waz I mistaken! Beside the cost and all, we come back 2-3 dayz before the game az total strangerz to our own home. The talk of discipline, concentration and/or fascilitiez doezn’t add up. Patrick Phiri trained the lads here and they performed. Like sending a child to a good high cost private school and paying for the so called extra lessonz at the same time.

  16. I believe in HR. I feel we have one of the best teams on the continent! By hook or crook, Algeria will fall! GO Zambia Go!

  17. # 8 playing in European leagues has little baring. Look at Egypt it has many professional players but failed to win a home. In short I can advice you that it is NOT the best team that always wins… Living in Europe for over 15yrs I watch many teams competing … E,g Manchester united was struggling to find a replacement after the Danish goal keeper left. The Australian could not stand to the likes of the Danes keeper hence his earlier exit from the club.

  18. Judging from Zambia,s performance against Rwanda we seriously need to up our game, firstly I have to blame the coach for poor team selection and making poor substitutions. Jacob mulenga should have started the game he has a proven track record of giving defenders a hard time, he’s fast and controls the ball well.
James chamanga was former top scorer in the South African premier league were he scored 15 goals for his former club Moroka swallows and still holds the record for the fastest hat-trick in south African soccer history he scored 3 goals in under 4 minutes! This man should have been in the starting line up. Mbesuma simply had a bad day at the office and should not be ruled out of any future games he had two defender’s marking him there by freeing up other players. The…

  19. Guys Guys Mwalanda sana!truth of the matter is that Algeria na kwata bola this time around, ikashupa…If we will depend on poor performance in front of goal we can forget, against Rwanda we needed 20 chances to convert one…Remember we always fall short against Arabs…Strikers yambeni ukunona ama boot ba mambala…..
