Ndola guards killed as Police fail to show up due to lack of fuel

Share

Robbers yesterday morning killed two security guards in Northrise residential area in Ndola in a failed attempt to steal from the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Church.

One of the guards was hacked to death at the SDA Church between Nyimba and Lupili roads and the other one was beaten to death and dumped in a furrow on Lupili Road.

One of the residents, Vester Mangani, said at the scene that she and her family heard a person screaming for help around 01:00 hours and called the police.

“The police replied that they could not come because they had no fuel in their cars,” Ms Mangani said.

She said the family found the body of one guard in the furrow in the morning and alerted other neighbours.

The body of the other guard who was hacked to death was found in one of the shelters at the SDA Church where he worked.

SDA caretaker, James Mumba, said in an interview that he found the body at 07:15 hours when he reported for work.

Mr Mumba said the doors to the church were tampered with but that the thieves did not enter.

He said there was another attempt to steal from the church on June 1 this year and that bandits had been terrorising residents in the area.

A Times of Zambia reporter found the body of the guard with a deep cut on the head still lying in a pool of blood as a horde of residents jostled to have a glimpse.

The hacked guard identified as Wishcot Phiri was an employee of Blessings Security Company.

Blessings Security director, Lesley Munyama said Mr Phiri was assigned to guard at the SDA Church.

The other deceased guard whose body was found in the furrow wore the Boundary Security Company uniform and had deep cuts on the face.
Residents took advantage of the presence of the Ndola deputy police chief Anderson Chengo at the scene to complain about lack of security in the area.

The residents said they were not able to move freely after 19:00 hours because there was a group of bandits that was attacking and stealing from people.
Mr Chengo said a police post was being constructed in the area and it was near completion.

  1. What the hell. This is too sad. And RB is busy proudly touring and presenting himself as a the “Zambian president” what a shame. Do Zambian leaders honestly have a sense of pride. I would be embarrassed to visit other homes before sorting out my filthy home.

  2. But they have fuel to go to welcome or see off the piece of cr@p at the airport every day. Trust me no one will even raise an eyebrow on this one. They are not concerned nor affected because their houses are guarded by Police. And one cipuba SENIOR CITIZEN has even the audacity to praise- sing for the real murderer-MMD on the blog, infact this is an an indictment for luck of leadership.. Its comments from characters such as SENIORCITIZEN LT should be deleting or blocking. Where did they get fuel to good and look at the bodies, am sorry but am deeply ashamed to be an african, do we really have normal brains between our eyes or marshmallows. In a normal society the I.G of police wouldn’t be sipping tea in his office right now Am very annoyed, more orphans and widows from preventable…

  3. And these same thugs will demand human rights when they go to prison after taking lives so senselessly.

  4. This is not accceptBLE people. No fuel is no excuse to rescue people’s lives. Where in the hell do they get fuel wherever they are secorting their leader to the airport? Didnt the IG or the boss at that station check to say we need fuel for night officers? because policing is not about sitting in the office and drinking tea (if at all they even do) you chaps have to move out and help out people. No fuel is indeeed a lame excuse that even your boss should be answerable. dont you have people in the field to rush to urgent scenes like that? this is no fare

  5. Indeed all such things are happening at the hands of people like SENIOR CITIZEN. security companies in zambia also should be regulated. most of these guards are guarding these premises without any radio. had the gaurds had a radio, they would have radioed their counterparts who would have come to their rescue. but since most of these security comapnies give kick backs to MMD and SENIOR CITIZEN, there is no one to monitor them SHAME ON YOU SENIOR CITIZEN

  6. #8 Woman of substance, I’m with you there. it’s only yesterday that some human rightists on LT were shooting us down for telling off those chaps who wanted to live in a clean envrionment. #4 KA’DOYO, This obsession with expectin everything to be done by the President should be checked. Are you aware that when these same cops are given new vehicles they turn them into sand delivery vans? So it might as well be that the fuel was used for errands other than security related ones durin the day, like taking the children of the Officer in Charge to school in Mpongwe or to help ferry people to the graveyard. Or it may be that bechilyakale ndalama za petulo? There are a number of factors you need to consider, thats why we’re promotin laziness in bein innovative coz of wantin free meals…

  7. Its realy sad story &very painful.Money for fuel is being used to buy jet fuel for our CHIEF TOURIST called RB!May God help Zambia

  8. Another thought. These guys where guards they were supposed to have mobiles (roger roger ) it doesnt mean that when one is guarding then they have to fight thieves alone. Call for backup.

  9. #10 Abena CB, that is the more reason I am saying in my question to KA’DOYO that reliance on all solutions from the President (incumbent or future) will not help us at all. That syndrome has even inhibited an enzyme I call “Thinkase” or “Innovatase” which would have made the officers to askl for assistance from the nearest police station. Does it mean that the entire Ndola Police Service had no fuel? An you are right in denouncing that lame excuse because if anything they could even have called for back-up from other stations. Pa last tiyambe noyenda namatako panja ati kabili niliye nyeleti coz the President has travelled to SA.

  10. This is embarassing, ati police failed to show up due to lack fuel sure.I remember another incendence in Ndola same area the fire briget failed to show up again due to lack of water. What a shame pa Zed,some of these thing nidala its not that we are poor or reccession.

  11. The sad part is that Fuel will show up during campaigns for 2011 elections. You will see Police Vehicles escorting RB wherever he goes to campaign with full tanks. When will people revolt and let these so called leaders that time is now. How do they expect to operate the mobile hospitals if they have no fuel in Ndola? Were will they find fuel in Kaputa and Nabwalya Chiombo? People, please wake up.

  12. This is really sad,it’s high time there was discipline & accountability in all public service depts.Having worked for a major oil marketing company,i know that The Police & Intelligence Services always get their fuels whenever they need them even when they don’t clear overdue debts. Most of the fuel is resold by the chaps that is why often Police vehicles have no fuel and their response to people calling for help is ”come and pick us help coz we have no fuel”.

  13. Very very sad and condolences to the families of the deceased. Please ill-equipping POLICEMEN MMD GRZ, can you please make sure losses of money like 27 Billion ZK are avoided and such money is used properly to provide safety to all Zambians Citizens.

As for the SDA church, God is with us and let us help the families of the deceased if we can in that place of the sad event.

    Prevention is better than cure.

  14. Police no fuel, you must be dealt with starting from the officer in charge. How do you operate like that ? Now two people have been killed due to your carelessness and their families will have more problems because maybe some were even bread winners. Were are we going with this kind of attitude ? In the morning you even go there to watch the bodies how immoral you are.Checking your book at the reception the very night you arrested aba shishita. Mwaba shani kanshi ? You all need to be charged for this nonsense operation

  15. All those on duty must be charged for causing these deaths including the officer in charge.Surely you knew that you will need fuel for such emergencies and yet you decide to work without fuel and expect those in need to come and pick you. Sad indeed. May the souls of the departed brothers rest in peace.

  16. The Police response no fuel in the car what nosense. And this is the same GRZ institution trying to lobby Parliament to have an Air Wing, for what if they can’t afford motor vehicle and routine maintenance how are they going to manage a fleet of choppers or small planes. Viva Hon Katuuka for rejecting such dreams. If the police cant respond to a distress call to Northrise from Ndola Central Police station or Kansenshi what will make them respond to distress call say between Nangoma & Mumbwa. They have all zeal and energy to chase pupils who are complaining of not being taught coz teachers are on strike. What a shameless Police Service. There is never shortage of fuel to ferry blocks & other building materials for personal use. Francis Kabonde what is service to citizens take action now.

  17. God forgive those robbers, they don’t know what they have done, inspire them to look at Calvary for reconciliation. Am so sad for this development.

  18. If one of the Police Chiefs had phoned to say his wife needed transport, it could have been available. I guess its the duty of the station commander to ensure that there is enough fuel for the night in case such a thing happens. That is why I trust SAPS they will come without excuse.

  19. The security companies must have communication systems that should be alerting them when a security guard is in distress. They should also be going round through out the night to check how guards are working. It seems the security companies are only interested in making money at the expense of employees’ lives and welfare.

  20. Ladies and gentlemen may I point out that every gaurd must work in pair and both MUST be armed with guns. Never allow any gaurd to work at night with a stick in hand.. Kakuba nkojisi nkalivunyo kazoka
