Serenje pupils riot, damage property

Share

Serenje Technical High School pupils, on Saturday night rioted causing damage to property in the township and at the government user block that houses most government offices including that of the district commissioner.

Confusion reigned in Serenje Boma when the pupils broke loose at about 23 hours and headed for the boma center where they caused damage to motor vehicles at the bus station and broke window panes to most of the business buildings.

The buildings include Malpontela Inn, PEP shop, Bata, GM trading Fikayeba, PAM office and truck and Serenje business center.

Others included the office of the District Commissioner, United Nations Volunteer (UNV), Zanis, DEC, Office for the District Administrative Offices (DAO), the office of the President (OP) two minibuses and a truck.

The pupils also burnt down the agricultural show enclosure at the national square where the show committee is preparing to hold this year’s agricultural show from 26th to 27th June.
Central province minister Ackimson Banda and provincial permanent secretary Dan Lumbama both of whom are in Serenje, condemned the action by the pupils and urged the police o investigate the matter deeper and ensure all involved are brought to book.

Seven pupils were apprehended with the help of the call boys and other concerned people at the bus station where the pupils threw stones at anything including human beings.

At the school, headmaster Ivwanani Mulambya conducted a roll call at about 01:00 hours, to help find out who was present or absent.

The minister wondered why pupils should riot when negotiations were over and the teacher unions signed the agreement with government for a 15 percent salary increase.

The pupils rioted over the strike by teachers saying their parents could not be paying school fees and yet they (pupils) were not learning.

And Mr. Lumbama said the event was uncalled for and the behavior by the pupils was a high level of indiscipline and showed what kind of people society will have.

He urged police to get to the root cause of the problem and bring the culprits to book adding that parents of the pupils involved should be made to pay for the damage caused to property.

“The damage should be evaluated and the cost be passed on to the school so that through the pupils, parents should pay.Why attack property for innocent people?” he wondered.

Mr. Lumbama said it was unfortunate that the pupils took to the steets when lessons at the school were going on smoothly after district education board secretary (DEBS) Patson Sichone working with district commissioner Stanley Chibwana mobilized senior teachers and others to handle all classes.

  1. This “He urged police to get to the root cause of the problem and bring the culprits to book adding that parents of the pupils involved should be made to pay for the damage caused to property” is sad to learn as thr root cause has already been written and is known as “The pupils rioted over the strike by teachers saying their parents could not be paying school fees and yet they (pupils) were not learning.” What did the reporters of this new and most of other Zambian news learn at school.

In all, the pupils did what they had to followinf the failure by the MMD GRZ to resolve the strike in good time.

1 Thessalonians 5:14Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men.

  2. Teachers try putting the needs of the pupils first then your own selfish interests at heart later. u may make professionals in the industry but you are not the profesionals in that industry. be content with the little you have,

  3. The limitation of riots, moral questions aside, is that they cannot win and their participants know it. Hence, rioting is not revolutionary but reactionary because it invites defeat. It involves an emotional catharsis, but it must be followed by a sense of futility.

Wicked and evil men alike will always support such uncalled for acts that causes damages to innocent peoples life and property.

Let not the word of God be used in vain!

  4. Whatever the cause, riot has an appalling aftermath. So please pupils be realistic and take responsibility of your own actions.Bushe ifyamba mupepa kwalisundila akakote?

  5. Abaiche aba, is that the type of education they are receiving? So what have they achieved by rioting? At least I would say the teachers have gotten themselves a measly 15% increment, but they earned their parents huge bills! What a loss! Let them pay or get jailed(the pupils).

  6. Oh these boyz, they over did the riot….you riot mudingo and also kuma domes. Why go that far causing damage to property? you already know that our economy is not sound,..so why do more damage at the infrustructure?? boyz muza gona ku one bambo one bambo!!

  7. The school children as behaving like or are PF cadres. This behaviour was noted on Copperbelt Province when PF cadres started bringing anarchy to Zambia.

Anyway, it appears some sense has come our Zambia way as Kitwe Teachers had a peaceful demostration. Maybe the pupils will take a leaf from this new peaceful behaviour hopefully the mighty UPND cadres.

    Have a great day though.

  8. Condemn any form of riot irrespective of who doez it and why. Let the union leaderz after consulting their memberz, announce wat they rezolve with rgard to the salary/conditionz negoiationz and not government. #3R.P.M aka M.H.M greetingz- you are right on wat other root cauze shud one look for? And why the innocent and overburdened parents to suffer more agony? The act waz a riot, and shudn’t any damage be borne by insurance somehow?

1 Thessalonians 5:14Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men.# 3 Your argument is really difficult to follow. In any case, what the pupils did cannot be justified in any way. They have a case with the government and not private individuals who won shops and vehicles in serenje. Can you imagine how people have been inconenvienced because of this unruly behavior? According to the scripture your cited, the best way out for the pupils would have to avoid their unruly behavior and may be seek other peaceful means of making their point known.

  10. # 13, How long does it take for your to claim to be processed if you have ever made one? What about the retention/excess clause? Who bears that cost? What about the cost of lost opportunities because your car is at the garage being worked on or your shop has to close for repairs? Can you also feel the frustration and anger of those motorists and shop owners who suffered the loss?

  11. 14 Ka Tona greetings and thanks for calling. The Scripture is a quote of the day (TUESDAY 16th June 2009) from me from the SDA Study Guide Sabbath School for this week. Check it by google if you think I am lying.

    Have a blessed day.

  12. To every action there is an equal reaction. As riots are not good and a well meaning person condemns the, however there is a need to look at the cause of riots. I can say your GRZ is the cause of the riot in Serenje. The guys dont have their children in Zambian schools so they dont care for the poor children education. Now the innocent people a loosing properties coz of this useless govnt. People of Zambia let us hold this gonvt responsible for what has happened in serenje. In fact we can sue govnt instaed of suing the poor parents of these pupils. Its only

  13. Its only REVOLUTION 2011 that can free us from this govnt of selfish people. remember Zambians that the world has change. Look at Iran, madagasca etc, people want change and change for good. Change to share the national cake. But in Zambia we have been so docile to the extent that the people like Mulongoti and Teta can behave like gods. Serenje people whose properties have been destroyed, please sue the govnt for its I dont care attitude towards teachers. Teachers should be respected. They are human just like the MMD politicians. LET US LOOK FOWARD TO REVOLUTION 2011. Baya sana bamambala.

  14. # 16, I have not called your honesty into disrepute. Why are you defending yourself for crimes your have not been accused of committing? LOL

  15. Mpompo boys at it again. I remember the riots we had in 85 or was it 86, anyway atleast we did not destroy private property. Did i miss something, what was the reason for the riots or it just becoming a norm to break stuff everytime people dont get what they want. They should be made to pay for the damages.

  16. 19 Ka Tona LO indeed.

  17. Reminds me of the good old days at Mpompompo. If a child needs something, the only natural way they know is to cry for it. The stupid minister and commissioner are commanding the police to get to the root cause of the matter. What a joke!!! The root cause of all this is GRZ, which includes them two. They are the ones who caused the teachers to go on strike. So, police bring these guys to book. Zedians, please let us all wake up and do something about some shitty leaders we have.

  18. it was bad……i shud know…….you guys dnt have any idea wat transpired.wrong pipo wer suspended…….happens tho
