Opposition political parties participating in the Chitambo parliamentary by-elections in Serenje have accused the ruling party of vote buying.

And the PF in Serenje has charged that the MMD campaign team in Chitambo constituency is using government vehicles which had registration numbers removed.

Speaking in an interview with ZANIS today, FDD National Deputy Secretary, Nathan Mulenga, and National Elections chairman, Anthony Kasandwe, accused the MMD of dishing out mealie meal and salt to villagers in the constituency, especially in Muchinka ward.

Mr. Mulonga also said the MMD had allegedly hired cadres from the Copperbelt and Lusaka who were blocking the opposition from entering what he termed as territories for the ruling party.

He said people of Chitambo constituency were not interested in thug politics but campaigns based on issues, adding that it was unfortunate that this was coming from the ruling party.

Mr Mulonga added that the people of Chitambo should be given fare chance to chose a leader of their choice who they think could deliver.

“It is unfortunate that vote-buying is again showing its ugly face in this by-election. The MMD has made some places no-go-areas for the opposition, which is not good. They can bring people to help them but not thugs,” he said.

Mr Mulonga said the FDD will not be intimidated by anybody and will take any political party head on in the by-election.

Meanwhile, Mr Kasandwe refuted claims that the FDD was sponsored to field a candidate in Chitambo in order to split the votes of the opposition,

Mr Kasandwe said there was no logic in the claims because the party existed as an individual political party.

He said the FDD had been consistent because the party had been fielding candidates in the past five by-elections and it was a formidable and reliable party.[quote]

And PF district Vice Treasurer, Delvis Chisha, accused the MMD of using government vehicles in the campaigns and called on the police to investigate.

But MMD Central Province chairperson ,Boyd Mutonka, said the opposition should prove the allegations instead of just making baseless accusations.

Mr Mutonka said police should move in and arrest anybody who was blocking others from campaigning because the MMD did not engage thugs to cause any problem during the campaigns.

He denied that the party was using government transport, saying the opposition should have facts about their complaints other than talking about things that they would not prove.

  1. Its not the first time! I hope this will not lead to court cases should the MMD candidate win! If the court comes to rule against them, we will see more bye-elections!

  2. Some pipo are dull kwena, how can one the same mistake of accepting to be bought nakasaka kabunga, then after the elections he/she is left in poverty.MMd when are you going to cease practising dirty politics kanshi?

  3. This is happening because of lack of strong institutions like ECZ, ACC & ZP currently they are under direct control of GRZ. The use of GRZ by MMD in by elections is order of the day. And the fact that the opposition is fielding more than one candidate then forgettting about them carrying the day. Whats the point of importing MMD cadres or thugs from Lusaka and Copperbelt just to go and spoil the electrol process. This is what USA President Barrack Obama spoke against whilst in Ghana and hardly week elapses in Zambia we at it again. Gud governance is not about fighting corruption inly but its wide and touches alot things related to how public affairs are conducted by those chosen to presidise on behalf of the silent majority. Let all stakeholders conduct their campaigns in an orderly manner

  4. Why dont these people video these so called government vehicles and thugs thts all the evidence they need. But they dont do tht which makes me think this is just normal talk for the opposition before election they cry before the results so if they loose they will say you see what we where telling????
Too much talk gother evidence use your video phone catch them in the act simple

  5. Ba LT what is your motive in using an old picture showing a well attended crowd of MMD supporters. I swear to God I have seen this picture before because of the beautiful woman in the fore front.

  6. Here we go again. What is really the problem with Zed politics? I thought we have the right oragns to look into these issues. Let people be given the right choice to vote for their rightful leaders.

  7. #6 Good question..why don’t they video all this evidence? Anyway I will tell you why: Because the Opposition in Zambia are big time losers and they have already realised that they have lost and hence resorting to cry baby cry even before the votes are casts. And soon we shall hear that VJ is in the area. I think Zambians should not waste time with these big liars and are so quick to blame rigging for their poor planning , poor work and poor performance

  8. The pipo of Chitambo know their problems better and capable of making their own decisions based on each political will sell to them in terms of developmental issues. It does not make sense to bribe votes with salt, m/meal, chitenge material etc. Lets us avoid being cheated and and vote for quality leadership that will be there in Chitambo and not imported leadership which will dispear like morning dew once voted into parliament. Development is not brought about by a political party but its the responsibility Gvt of the day. No singer individual will develop any part of Zed. Let votes in Chitambo be on Red Alert and vote leaders whom theynhave confidence in and ones who live amogest them. Its not about MMD, FDD or PF/UPND but its about quality representation in parliament.Make Right Choice

  9. FDD you know for sure that you are losing, you are respeonsible for this MMD victory. So shut de f.u.c.k up and stop wasting our time you spoilers.

  10. #10 MMD chief Bootlicker, what the hell are you talking about?Poor work and poor perfomance are the attributes of MMD.Iwe mudala just shut your gob!! You think MMD will be in power forever? There’s always a bitter end to every line of happiness, just wait..!

  11. Banda said“There are some people who are beginning to see things that do not exist,” If this is about a monkey unleashing a tsunami of “monkey body processed water” he is talking about, it’s him who is blind to things clearly visible to all. I also hear a hippo charged at him at Hippo Lodge the other month. I wonder what next, maybe one of these state house impalas is set to goul him, right through his volumptous “Savimbic sized” nose.

  12. I think the opposition is lying.

We are now in a digital age please. It is so simple to gather evidence. You can just take your 2 megapixel Nokia and take a picture of the same vehicles as evidence. The opposition has got no evidence and this is just them spilling their political rhetoric.

Please opposition, provide evidence to prove your baseless accusations. We are tired of hear-say from the opposition. We want evidence.

The opposition knows the MMD is winning this election and now they are resorting to dirty tactics.

  13. The MMD has no money, its broke, these cars they are using are from government departments. Further, these could also be procured from the US$2 million Teta schemed off from the “tu Tetamalilos” he bought from China. These are the 20% schemers Obama was talking about in Ghana, satanic retards!

  14. The majority of Zambians I know support the opposition, but what suprises me is that MMD still has the upper hand.

  15. MMDchiefbootliker..i think iam sick and tired of your comments thinking you are the only one who knows what is good for the zambian pipo. Do you know how disgusting your comments has gotten to be….stop the idea of just being political but try to see some sense in what is happening in zambia.I love your passion for your party but i think its getting too much.Iam not a plotician myself but i have a heart for this country and would very much be happy if things got better one day.Its very dangerous in life to do things one doenst even understand.

  16. If this is true it is very sad indeed. Instead of the opposition parties to complain why cant they also start buying the votes? I know FDD is a small party and broke but don’t go into politics when u are broke. The people of Chitambo wont vote for a poor man even if he has proper programmes. politics even in the us is not for the poor. So ba FDD work hard and find money to buy also.

  17. It seems that this is part and parcel of politics in Africa to the extent that you dont know who to believe. Even the fact that we are living in a digital age does not help – images can be doctored and there is no way of knowing what happened. What is required is an independent body to verify these allegations. It is sad, but perhaps we still need to be monitored by international observers to ensure that the will of the people is adhered to.

  18. Ba MMD when i you go to Grow. Its true that when people grow old even their minds became childish. We are through with you old Chaps, It is time for MMD to Go. We are keeping old People in the GRZ for Nothing. Please Dish them out in 2011

  19. man in exile.

I really don’t knw why pipo don’t think for others,as long as they are enjoying at the expense of others.I tell you iam also tired of this govt and its supporters.MMD and its supporters have no passion for the pipo of zambia,Iam also non partisan, but my daily prayer is to have leaders who will have concern for his surbodinates, not only for his bootlikers.Shame on all the pipo who support the greedy and selfiness that has hauted MMD.

  20. #20 – Just because the majority of people that YOU know support the opposition does not mean that most Zambians do. Opinion polls are based on a representative number of people regarding class, location, age, sex, income etc. So the fact that the majority of people that you interact with support a particular party does not hold any water here. Most people I know dont support the opposition but so what?

  21. #19 so what is better for the country or rather what political party is better for the country??? The Zambian electorate are not as dull as many people make out there is a reason they vote the way they do. There is a luck of an alternative that will do better or live up to peoples expectetions hence the devil you know is better than the angel you dont know. Lets be realistic the opposition in our country is not organised to make matters wase they are all from MMD except for unip. All of them just want a chance to rule, to be president, to leader they all change colour once at the top.

  22. #18,Free MMD Economist! The MMD is dead scared of the UPND-PF pact. Thats why they ve resorted to dirty tricks. Its not lie. We know your people now. Rigging is all they know. Am sure Vj will will soon camp in the area.

  23. #15 As usual day dreaming. Of course MMD will never be in power forever, we know that that is why we take elections seriously and work hard and professionally. I can guarantee that with this type of opposition that is hell bent on peddling in lies and emotionalism, I would be surprised if we stay in power for ever. Lies never win and will never win

  24. When Jesus comes he will blame us for our poverty cause we do not react accordingly to wrong doings…God 4give us…

  25. #18 Zozi, you are right in saying that the majority support the opposition. But what you are forgeting is that the total number is an aggregate of severally accumulated votes which you cannot say belong to one single party. So, until this pact delivers a united vote MMD will still pull a majority. The other thing is that whoever buys voters cards has no use for them because we cannot assume that all the holders of those cards were going to vote for a particular party. That is tanatmount to thinking that someone cannot change preference to vote for MMD. Now if there are chances of someone wanting to for MMD at the last minute, does that not put MMD at a disadvantage if they withhold that vote from being counted in their favour? It is just simple and cheap mindedness by the opposition.

  26. Also the majority are not registered voters the day i will see somebody really stand for democracy i will vote again. They will be in government or the opposition i dont care unlike some people here who think as long as its opposition its rosy you chaps warry me

  27. This story of rigging will never end. Even if UPND & PF came into power, MMD would accuse them of rigging. Its African politics bane, get used to it. The loser always accuses the winner of rigging. Anyhow, Ba MMD cant win clean elections, period. Its just that this story of rigging is now so boring. Each and every time!

  28. PF& UPND can go H U NG …who cares. I thought Sata was hard battle tested but is always crying crying. He is supposed to be the kingpin of zed politics…..master of dirty works. But always beaten at his game. NO way in H E L L these clowns cnt win in Chitambo.

  29. #35.Deja Vu ,

How are you today? Hope all is well with you.Obama made it clear that he will never visit a country in africa which is infected with corrupt leaders that is why he has not even visited his home country Kenya.Ala we only need God to rescue us,Iam sure even God is regreting to put MMD in power.

  30. THIS IS WHAT WE CALL THE AFRICAN POLITICAL SYNDROME..ITS NORMAL IN AFRICA AND IT HAPPENS.. SOMETHINGS NEVER CHANGE..SORRY GUYS

  31. …..and the story continues……Maybe some of you guys ought to believe me now when I say the government is determined by poor and uneducated people who are the mojority voters and MMD is loving it.

  32. As long as we have 5, 6 or 7 opposition candidates contesting against 1 ruling candidate, we should forget about the opposition winning major elections. Come 2011, MMD will still be in power and this pact thing, I have my own doubts it will work.

  33. The untimely death of Mwanawasa brought about sudden disturbance and disruptions to the plans and machinations of certain people. Under the blind eye of the late, certain individuals had invented hefty schemes that bought them wealth and fortune. A certain cartel of well known figureheads had amassed millions of dollars under the very nose of a government whose main theme in office was the fight against corruption. All seemed well as long as the then President sung the song of fighting corruption.

  34. The fight against corruption was really centered on the pursuit and prosecution of Chiluba who has even to this day yet to be proven guilty. Billions of kwacha have been spent and yet there is no sight to its conclusion. Whilst the prosecution of nation plunderers is welcome, there is clear injustice on the nation as a whole if justice is delayed. The amount of money purported to have been stolen by Chiluba is far less that what has ben spent on the lawyers pursuing him.

  35. This infamous cartel has within its ranks people who prior to being appointed to positions of authority were known paupers who out of the blues became instant billionaires. Whether they had the full backing of the late President or not is yet to be established. But what is clear is that with the President’s passing, their conniving schemes became open to the public. The revelations of how deeply entrenched the POST newspaper were in all this will shock even their most ardent supporters. They (POST) above anyone else have done the most to try and divert attention from the dealings of this cartel.

  36. The POST involvement is not limited to the favours received in the ZA scam business. The very same people behind the POST newspaper are the same ones involved in the veiled fight against corruption. The favors extended to the POST by Mwanawasa and this cartel is now the subject of investigations.

  37. #41 it will never work. We need somebody who will come hard, strong, confident and powerful like Chiluba come to out Kaunda. Otherwise we are stuck with Monkey urinaries

  38. One of the first things that came into their mind following the demise of Mwanawasa was to raise a replacement from among themselves. This would have worked to cover and perpetuate their illegal schemes. Unfortunately for them, this could not work. Mangande was always a nonentity and simply a desperate attempt on their part to even consider as a possible candidate. The POST again was given the responsibility to image build him. This was to prove insufficient as he lost terribly to RB in the NEC elections.

  39. Many shoddy deals went undetected and unmentioned despite the knowledge of the POST. Some included, the ZA scam, the oil deals involving the former 1st lady, the Ministry of Health sham company deals, to mention but a few. The desperation on the part of this cartel is growing as more scandals are revealed. RB has refused to give in to their demands and has promised to deal with them without fear or favour, regardless of whom and what status they hold.

  40. This is reason for the unjustified attempt by the POST to malign and unjustly condemn RB government. The best bet for now is to attempt to ferment an impression to discredit RB’s government and leadership.

  41. YOU ZAMBIANS ARE S.T.U.P.I.D. FOR HOW LONG ARE YOU GOING TO FEED ONLY ON ELECTION DAY? WHY CAN’T YOU ALL SAY NO TO THIS INSULT. FOR HOW LONG ARE YOU GOING TO BE FOOLED BY THESE M.O.N.K.E.Y.S IN MMD?

  42. #16. IT’S EASY TO KNOW THE VEHICLES BELONGED TO GRZ. 1 NO ONE CAN DARE DRIVE A UN LICENCED VEHICLE, 2 IN ZAMBIA ALL VEHICLE HAVE TO BE INSURED, 3 EVEN IN KK UNIP USED GRZ RESOURCES DURING AND AFTER CAMPAIGNS.

THIS IS WHOLE PART OF RIGGING AND THIS IS WHAT OBAMA IS CAUTIONING AFRICAN LEADERS ABOUT. ITS ONLY IN AFRICA MOSTLY WHERE SUCH MISUSE OF PUBLIC CAPITAL BY RULING POLITICAL PARTIES IS PRACTISED.

  43. #42 , If this infamous cartel truly exists, what is the ACC, the police and others waiting for?

  44. “Africa does not need strong men, but strong instituitons” – Barack Obama, 11th July 2009, Accra, Ghana

  45. Matworld, i ask again, does R.B or sonny ronnie, or even tetamaboza,or even ka mike ever read what we bloggers jot down

  46. The ruling party in Africa is everything – the police, the ACC, the judge not forgeting procurement and awarding of tenders, electral commission, all this rolled up in one, what a country!!

  47. Hi everybody, its good to be back…..matworld nice guy ati shani? Are you still Mr “Nice Guy”? Lady Chiza’s Legs, how are they doing? Did anyone listen to this morning’s Let the People Talk? What commedy! Never have laughed so much yet feeling so sad….yaba, but pa Zed paba abantu.

  48. we need to be careful with Banda Zambia. Hes showing tendercies of mabuto or a tyranical behavior. Lets be careful with this guy. Yes just a few days ago president Obama spoke highly of corrupt govts and i was hoping Banda must have gotten a glimpse his speech. i guess he must have change the chaneel a watched ponograph with Teta mushala and Mulongoti

  49. They way forward……I’m sure it is law that unregistered vehicles or vehicles without number plates should not be allowed on Zambian roads without express permission by traffic police. Henceforth, the Chief of Police in any suspected area should be made accountable against corruption for allowing unregistered vehicles or vehicles without number plates to be on the roads or campaign trails without impounding them in the first instance. Unregistered vehicles suspected to be used in campains should be impounded and the civil society expected to take up the cases with the courts.

  50. #60 you are right. It’s very foolish of MMD Chief Bootlicker to even speak for MMD. I’m sure he’s deaf, just like his MMD friends. His level of thinking is quite low. So, MMD Chief Bootlicker with your ugly as sin face go to hell together with your friends. No wonder RB has no plans of running the nation. It’s because his most supporters are imbeciles.

  51. #39Matwoerld. Greetings. Thanx for everything. MY EXPERIENCE IS THAT WE ZAMBIANS GLORIFY CRIME. I SEE HOW PEOPLE WHO HAVE AMASSED WEALTH ARE ACCORDED RESPECT WHEEVER THEY ENTER A PUB. YOU HEAR ALL SORTS OF ROBIN HOOD STORIES ABOUT THESE FELLAS. EVEN THE POLICE GLORIFY THEM. POLITICS IN ZAMBIA IS NOW A BUSINESS, A CORRUPT ONE FOR THAT MATTER. THE PROBLEM IS LIKE BRUTUS TOLD CASSIUS DOES NOT LIE IN OUR STARS BUT WITHIN OURSELVES. WE UNDERATE OURSELVES AND ALLOW SMALL PEOPLE BECOME GIANTS OVER US. WE ARE BORN THE SAME AND THIS SHOULD BE CARDINAL ON WHAT EVER WE DO. IF THEY(MMD) ARE GODS THEY SHOULD VACATE ZAMBIA & GO TO HEAVEN

  52. #57, I ASSURE YOU TETA AND MULONGOTI DO READ THE INSULTS YOU WRITE ABOUT THEM ON THE BLOG. ZAMBIA IS A DEMOCRACY AND A FREE COUNTRY AND THEY ACCEPT THIS REALITY. BUT DO YOU THINK ANY SELF RESPECTING POLITICIAN WOULD TAKE MANY OF THE CHILDISH CONTRIBUTIONS SERIOUSLY. THESE ARE ARE PEOPLE WHO ARE INVOLVED IN REAL POLITICS. AS YOU WRITE, THEY ARE IN CHITAMBO CAMPAIGNING. OTHERS ARE IN KASAMA IN ANTICIPATION OF THE SAVIOUR CHISHIMBA BY ELECTION. TETAMASHIMBA HAS WON SOLWEZI WEST FOUR TIMES AND IS EXPECTED TO WIN IT AGAIN IN 2011. SO MY ADVICE TO ALL OF YOU MY FRIENDS IS, GET REAL. IF YOU ARE PERSUADED TO BE A POLITICIAN, THEN GET OFF YOUR PEDESTAL AND START CAMPAIGNING IN CHAMA OR CHIENGE OR WHERE EVER. IT IS NOT EASY I TELL YOU.

  53. A COMMENT ABOUT THE ALLEGATIONS OF CORRUPTION. FISTLY AT EVERY BY ELECTION, THERE ARE LEGIONS OF OBSERVERS CAMPED IN THE CONSTITUTENCY SUCH AS FODEP, SACCORD, AVAP ETC… I BELIEVE IT IS MORE PRODUCTIVE TO GET AN OPINION FROM THEM RATHER THAN FROM MMD OR THE OPPOSITION. AS FOR VOTE BUYING, I WOULD PROPOSE THAT YOU VISIT ANY ELECTION CAMPAIGN IN ZAMBIA AND YOU WILL IMMEDIATELY BE KNOCKED DOWN BY VOTERS ASKING YOU FOR MONEY UNTIL YOU RUN AWAY. THIS IS THE REALITY. THE MONITORS KNOW THIS AND THEY DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO, BECAUSE THE VOTERS EVEN ASK THE OBSERVERS FOR MONEY. THEY DON’T CARE WHICH PARTY GIVES THEM MONEY AND THEY MAY NOT EVEN VOTE FOR YOU AFTER WASTING YOU MONEY. THE VOTERS ARE MORE CUNNING THAN THE CAMPAIGNERS.

  54. by the way , i witnessed kaande leaving the MMD SECRETARIATE in lusaka with trucks loads full of m/meal, suger ,cooking oil, mmd chitenges for chitambo last month. belive me or not

  55. The cartel along with the help of the POST has found a convenient ally in PF/SATA whose political ambitions resonate with the diversion they want to create. SATA has long suffered political defeat and will take any chance to use anyone including the cartel to pursue his agenda. The cartel bet on SATA is based on the assumption that he is like minded in hatred to both Chiluba and RB. Who is fooling who, if one may ask? There is a likelihood of distrust amongst them. SATA was a known opponent of Mwanawasa and the former 1st lady has previously shown her open dislike of him. The collaboration is through the intermediary of third parties and this in itself is enough cause for further mistrust.

  56. The people of Zambia indeed deserve to know the truth. The fight against abuse must transcend political affiliation and the current government must be commended for the openness it has exhibited in this fight. It is clear that RB is not influenced by the fact that some of the perpetrators of these crimes are in fact within the ruling party. No matter who it is, anyone found wanting must be prosecuted without fear or favour.

  57. Ummmmm duh!!!!_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

  58. Of course, our fellow Zambian voters and others have been corrupted in their minds to think that receiving free money and/or gifts at any time is the best way of life by the coming to power of the irresponsible MMD GRZ in 1991 todate.

This unfortunate mentality needs to be changed in our fellow young Zambians who are in schools as I have proposed many times before and seemingly it appears the current Administration is working in that line — following the US Ambassador’s information that was shared on this forum through a television interview.

However, the President RB Banda Administration needs to look at ways of reaching the people that can not access school due to various reasons with the same coorupt free minds message that school going ones now have.
