Zambia drops in ranking on the Global Peace Index

Share

Zambia has dropped by three places on the ranking of the Global Peace Index from the 53rd most peaceful country in the world recorded in 2007 and 2008 to the 58th most peaceful country in the world.

And Zambia has also fallen from the 5th most peaceful country in Africa in 2007 and 2008 to the 6th most peaceful country in Africa 2009.

Africa Internally Displaced Persons Voices Africa IDP Voice Executive Director Joseph Chilengi disclosed the development when he releases the Global Peace Index 2009 in Accra, Ghana

Mr. Chilengi, who is also the Chairperson for Political Affairs Cluster of the African Union Economic, Social and Cultural (AU ECOSOCC) disclosed that Botswana has assumed the top position as the most peaceful place in Africa in the 2009 Global Peace Index with Malawi into second position, while New Zealand is ranked number one as the most peaceful country in the world.

He told ZANIS in a statement that the results of the Global Peace Index for 2009 suggest that the world has become slightly less peaceful in the past year, which appears to reflect the intensification of violent conflict in some countries.

He added rapidly rising unemployment, pay freezes and falls in the value of house prices, savings and pensions is causing popular resentment in many countries, with political repercussions that have been registered by the GPI through various indicators measuring safety and security in society.

“Global challenges call for global solutions and these solutions require cooperation on a scale unprecedented in human history.

Peace is an essential prerequisite because without peace we will be unable to achieve the levels of cooperation, inclusiveness and social equity necessary to solve these challenges, let alone empower the international institutions necessary to address them.” he said

The Global Peace Index is a first step in the a measurement of peace as the “absence of violence”, that seeks to determine what cultural attributes and institutions are associated with states of peace

  1. so we can clearly see that we are not the only ones on the peace ladder. If Malawi can beat us economically and now peacewise, we have no excuse to boast about the peace and stability that we have been preaching since time started ticking.
lets just swallow our pride and look for other options where leadership is concerned. Ofcourse we need people who are more focused than the so called honorable members of parliament who dont even know the word NULLITY yet their mother is supporting them as being honorable. There is nothing honorable in the zambian parliament other than increment of MP’s monies.

  2. We have droped in “peace rankings” because nowadays we have too many prima donnas in zambia.Anyhow,i’m curious to know the rankings of zimbabwe and parkistan(not sure about the spelling)

  3. Its The Monkeys one Tundila (urineted) on the president and Two charged on the Minister of Defence who dropped in the Dam. For the Urineting 3 ranks where dropped and for the Dam issue 2 ranks where dropped. Please put monkeys in Cages before any further Ranks can be Dropped.

  4. All this unfortuate “Zambia has dropped by three places on the ranking of the Global Peace Index from the 53rd most peaceful country in the world recorded in 2007 and 2008 to the 58th most peaceful country in the world… also fallen from the 5th most peaceful country in Africa in 2007 and 2008 to the 6th most peaceful country in Africa 2009
” position of Zambia now is because of thefailure by the MMD GRZ to rule us Zambians properly in their practice of divisive rule and trying hard to continue having grip or hold on power at all costs. Democratic principles are slowly being thrown away from the MMD political party and GRZ. Have a blessed day all.

  5. It is interesting that this report on the declining of peace in Zambia comes at the same time as Kaunda’s comments that Zambian is developing because there is peace in the country ( Today’s Post news). No one can fool Zambians all the time. What peace is there in Zambia? Peace is not only the absence of war. Can there be peace with so much corruption and plunder of resources by those in top leadership? The answer is, NO ! The majority of the population lives in abject poverty while the leaders continue with their plunder. Even the state house monkey is disguted by this. So KK stop being mischievous and enjoy your retirement quietly.

  6. All this must be blamed on the politicians who are busy inciting citizens to demonstrate on any single issue and also the careless talk in public by the same people. We desrve the drop.

  7. Major contributing factors to me are
    1. the brawl between Levy and Mugabe last year + Kikwete over Zim
    2. more recruitments in security personnel
    3. rise in cost of living and poverty related issues
    4. It is likely that we acquired more military weaponry last year
    5. Drop in GDP allocation to Health, Education
    6. Electoral disputes/rigging/doctoring

The ranking may drop further in 2010 because of
    1. 1000 new Police personnel
    2. Media harrarment
    3. Rise in corruption cases
    4. Rise in Gender insensitivity
    5. Poor Health and Education policy for workers
    6. Political uncertainity
    7. Forced refugee repatriations to Zim Congo Angola Ethopia Sudan

  8. We are just docile with a laiz affair attitude other wise there is no peace in Zambia. To day you cannot walk alone at night without being mugged. All this is as a result of rising unemployment and with a talking government. What ever forum the President addresses he not end his speach without attacking the opposition and boasting how he won the election by 100%(sic). Peace is relative

There are about 24 indicators/practices that hint to lack of HUMAN SECURITY and not STATE SECURITY in a Nation.
Each indicator has a score of 1 to 10. The higher the score the more negative the practice is for/or in the Nation.
The index/scoring is based on the performance of the Nation in the previous cycle
Does this explanation give you some hint.

  10. Where is Zambia heading? we are not proud of independence as poverty is invading the country slow by slow.

  12. This is one reason why Zam is poor. She is being milked by other countries. Why paying for safari in south Africa when the game parks are in Zambia??? This is much more annoyance that big money is going outside the country. Zambians must benefit and make money out of its nature resources.

  13. The 58th most peaceful country in the world….? How it could be more peaceful than Zambia?
I feel very safe in Zambia and I don’t think it is less peaceful than my own country, I can tell you!Zambia = best country in the world

  14. For sure that Zambia is safe…. but, how can we improve Zambia position? Improving education… Education leads to all other good things…

I feel very safe in Zambia either, and for sure its much more peacefull than m y own country (Brazil)….
Love Zambia = Best country in the world!
