The National Housing Authority (NHA) is to erect 875 medium and low cost houses in Lusaka in Mandevu compound.
NHA Acting Chief Architect, Mutinta Sichali said the construction of the houses is aimed at addressing the current problems in housing in the country.
Ms. Sichali said this in an interview with ZANIS at the just ended 83rd Agriculture and Commercial Show in Lusaka.
She said the institution is currently lobbying for finances from cooperating partners adding that the construction works will commence anytime after the funds are available.
“We are lobbying for funds from government and also looking for partnership from other companies, but for now we want to first work on the sewer, roads and other infrastructure then we will move on site for actual construction” she said.
She said the institution has recognized the housing shortage in the country and is trying its best to help address this problem.
Ms. Sichali said the demand for housing in the country is high and that the authority has since devised mechanism to ensure that many people are catered for by coming up with different housing types.
She said the houses are in accordance with the economic situation of many people in the areas where these houses are built.
She said NHA has so far constructed 20 medium and low costs houses in Nyumba Yanga, 20 high cost houses in Ibex Hill and is currently constructing 85 houses in Twin Palm.
She further said that the authority is working with Districts councils around the country where many other projects will be done.

If constructing 20 houses took NHA 5 years, how long do you think constructing 875 houses will take? And assuming Tetamashimba’s pipe dream of a million houses at 5 prefabricated houses per day were true, then by the time NHA finishes its housing project, every Zambian including infants will have their own house. Therefore, some of these stories should be taken with a pinch of salt. I know Tetamashimba’s project is a pipe dream and NHA statement is a declaration of intention but something is missing in between – the road to realisation of those intentions. What time frame, what resources, a clear GANTT chart showing the project plan and its milestones, then we may be talking.

#3 Kachonga,
In addition, it apperas NHA is just coming with that announcement after the staement by Mr Teta. If it is that piece of land on that road leading to Roma from Great North Road it has been idle for a long time. In fact if they were serious indeed they could have been the ones who should have beautified that part where KK influenced the construction of merely two houses under habit for humanity leaving the surrounding space to be turned into a shanty appearance of the city. Why can’t NHA team up with Napsa, ZSIC, Lusaka City Council and Pensions if they do not have cash? With such a team it would even be easy to obtain a loan for the projects to be undertaken throughout Zed. That is what is called innovation. Should we always wait for a President to come up with such ideas?
#4 You are right. However sometimes even us bloggers make silly mistakes as I have just done in #5 above. I usually avoid such mistakes by having the comment done in word whereby mispellings can be identified and corrected then pasted on a blog. I can escape the rebuke but for LT that is unacceptable because to them they are in business as well.
Yes constructing of 875 houses in Mandevu is welcome move but sanitation, road networks and security should be a priority. There is need for NAH to build a big police station in that location otherwise those that are going to buy houses there willbe like those days of Avondale and Woodlands Extention and Nyumba Yanga. We are yet to witness this project being implemented in record time or it will be another story of squarters occupying those plots illigally. By the way is Hon Teta Mashimba around the city. The man is quiet . Should we assume he has run out of targets this time or is busy attending traditional ceremonies or sensitizing the poor on the importance of hearses in the countryside. Mike Mulongo nothing to talk about. Man we need your comments.

# 5 You are right, NHA should team up with ZISC, NAPSA and the Lusaka city . Not what Hon Tetamashimba is suggesting, that we look for foreign investors, its wrong!!!!!!!!!! Mulefwayafye ukulchita impower ama foreigners. Muchinje!!!
I have never heard of the National Housing Authority constructing houses in any other town other than Lusaka. Has it ever built even a single house in Kitwe, Chingola, or Livingstone? Why can’t it just be called Lusaka Housing Authority?
I need one houses from there, lets hope no stupid chairpersons will be there to steal our moneys.
