Govt urged to increase funding to the education sector

Share

pupilsPeoples Action Forum (PAF) Executive Director Jennifer Chiwela has urged government to increase the 2010 National budget to the education sector.

Speaking in an interview in Lusaka today, Ms Chiwela says the education sector has suffered greatly due to adequate funding from the government.

Ms. Chiwela said government should allocate more than the three percent of the funds set aside for the education sector in the country.

She has further appealed to government to speed up the national policy on illiteracy because it has taken too long adding that the success of adult literacy depends on it.

Ms. Chiwela expressed concern that if the process of policy implementation is not quickly looked into adult literacy will not yield desirable results.

She explained that currently there is no common curriculum and education material that has been put in place to improve the development of adult education.

Ms. Chiwela said the delay has resulted in the development of different types of education materials for adult literacy in the country.

  1. Lets put Education as our National priority. Its very unfortunate that Zambian have beeen denied their right to education. Last wk we had the opportunity to watch those horrible pictures of boarding schools in southern province. It is unbelievable that govt has tolerated such Children to be subjected to horrific conditions. We are failing in delivering tangible and strategic thots in govt because of fontine leadership. We need an educated generation that will stir Zambia in a progressive front.

  2. On “Ms. Chiwela said government should allocate more than the three percent of the funds set aside for the education sector in the country“, I am appalled that the allocation proposed is low unless the sentence needs to be re-written. My take is that the education sector mus be allocated 30% of the National Budget for us to alomst eradicate illiteracy.

On “She has further appealed to government to speed up the national policy on illiteracy because it has taken too long adding that the success of adult literacy depends on it“, I am glad that someone has mentioned this and PF leader must take note. Happy Sabbath Day all.

  3. Lets put education as a priority in regard to funding. The development of our Country depends on it. The iliteracy levels in this Country are shoking in this day and age. The Govt needs to work up to this fact. Huge amounts of moneys are going to other things which are not as important as education. If we are serious about the development of this Country, education first
