The Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (ZESCO) has announced that it will on Monday August 17 shut down generator number one (1) at the Kafue Gorge power station.

ZESCO Senior Manager for Marketing and Public Relations Lucy Zimba says the shutdown s expected to last for a period of about 17 days from 06:00 hours to 18 hours during this period.

Ms Zimba said the shutdown is meant to facilitate generator efficiency tests to be conducted by the contractor.

Ms Zimba disclosed this in a press statement made available to ZANIS in Lusaka today.

She said the shutdown was part of the contractor’s obligation under the power Rehabilitation Project, recently completed at Kafue Gorge.

She said the shutdown of the 165 megawatts (MW) generator will result in a national power supply deficit of up to 100MW during peak hours daily and may necessitate increased load shedding.

“We Therefore wish to advice our customers to conserve electricity by switching off some electrical appliances particularly during the morning peak hours 06:00-09:00 hours and evening peak hours 18:00-21:00 hours daily during the stated period”, she said.

And the ZESCO Marketing and PR Manager has thanked ZESCO customers for their cooperation during the shutdown of one of the transformers at the Kafue Gorge last week.

She said as a result of the customer’s compliance to the “Switch and Serve” at peak hours during the shutdown period, load shedding was significantly reduced.

Ms Zimba said this demonstrates that power deficits can be managed and load shedding avoided.

  1. Generator nambala one at the Kafue Gorge power station will be shut? It’s about time we diversified to Wind and Gas Energy forms.

  2. #1. Don’t expect such initiatives now. the leadership is rotten to the core to think big. How come senior positions are filled with Bandas relatives? Some one tell us.

  3. #4 Zambi-can
This is why we need to mobilize all patriotic, intelligent Zambians to think and vote wise in 2011 – for young, dynamic leaders with a vision and will power to do the impossible for our country.

  4. What Banda should do now is not give a job to anybody with Eastern surnames. That means he cant be accused of favouring akumawa. If you are a woman and not an Eastern er but married to someone who is, then too bad.

  5. Why do we allow ourselves to think (and sink) so shallow? We see red in everything. Banda found these people in their positions.

  6. TEACHERS in Nchelenge district have expressed displeasure over their District Education Board Secretary’s (DEBS) decision to demand financial contributions from schools to buy gifts for education minister Dora Siliya who is expected to tour government projects in the district.
But Nchelenge DEBS John Kalifungwa could neither deny nor confirm the matter.

Teachers, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Kalifungwa went round the schools collecting K100, 000 from each of them for the purpose of buying gifts for Siliya.

“The money was being collected last week on Tuesday without the money being receipted for. The minister was expected on Thursday but the programme has changed, she is coming on Sunday [today]. The figure that is being targeted to be raised is K5 million as a…

  7. Shame!!!!!! ZAMBIA will never take advantage of its various natural resourses to develop.TRUELY, Zambia has the highest potential to PRODUCE and suply hydro-electricity to our neighbours and beyond.40% of rivers with hydro potential in southern AFRICA passes through ZAMBIA and yet very little development has take place on the Energy sector to bring a massive revenue to the country..Iam sure we are still using generators which were abandoned by the colonial masters.ZAMBIANS, do we have a heart to develop?

  8. No.2 dont call a normal shutdown for maintainance a miserable…..How long will they last if they can run for 365days without maintainance?

No.15 which shame are u talking about all this generators at kafue gorge were installed in the 1970 by super KEN KK.may be its shame cos of u lacking knowledge about them.Lets not just talk anyhow.

  9. What I see here is that bloggers just blog for the sake of it. They have nothing to blog that makes sense. Shutdown for maintenance surely should be an issue? I can,t understand. Even in private companies we do shutdown machines for tests and maintenance nothing wrong. And what wrong with appointing Easterners if they can deliver? Just because the President is from the East then intelligent and performing easterners should not be appointed to responsible position? Shame on on guys who think so low. no wonder you go to work to develop other countries leaving your own!

  10. Zedians complaining about announced necessary planned maintenance shutdown on critical equipment!! We should complain about lack of maintenance when we have unplanned and unannounced forced shutdown of generators. If anything Zesco should be encouraged to carry out such works more frequently to avoid blackouts. Performance tests are an important aspect of any system even in non- technical fields!

  11. Is it a national disease in Zambia to always complain even of things that are straight forward. There is nothing wrong with what ZESCO is doing. They have to constantly carry out maintainance on their infrastructure because if they do not do that the chances of break downs will increase. The major problem is that the country hasnt got enough generation capacity. What Zambia needs is more generation capacity so much that we can have stand by energy upto a quarter of the national energy consumption i.e if our national consumption is 3000MW we should have on standby another 750MW. This is how other countries manage their energy needs.

  12. ZESCO shuts down generator for maintenance and you blame the President? What kind of shallow thinking is this. May be load shedding has only started during RB’s rule. Give us a break if your role is to condemn everything that RB does. On this one you are off the mark!

  13. # 19 Mbulawa, that is progressive thinking! Not just all the time complaining without offering alternative ideas! For the information of nambala 1 the wind speeds in Zambia are not high enough and not sustainable to be viable for commercial power generation! Then if you mean natural gas by just GAS, try to wait until oil explorations are exhausted in NWestern province because natural gas comes with oil explorations! Otherwise I like your vision for mother Zed.
