The MMD says former First Lady, Maureen Mwanawasa, is free to contest the party and republican presidency in 2016.
MMD Acting Spokesperson, Mike Mulongoti, says the ruling party is democratic and gives equal opportunities to all members to contest any positions including the presidency.
Mr. Mulongoti told ZNBC news that members are free to make such indications although there is still a long way to go before the 2016 elections.
Mrs Mwanawasa has been quoted in Friday’s edition of the Times of Zambia news paper as saying she will contest the 2016 polls.
The former first lady said for now she will support the candidature of President Rupiah Banda.
She said her decision to contest the 2016 presidential elections has been driven by her passion to lead Zambia.
Mrs. Mwanawasa also dismissed rumours that she is a wealthy woman.

The first suspicion is that the announcement was made in the Times of Zambia and not the Post which means the story was cleared at the highest level (ka John Phiri reports to Emmanuel Nyirenda). Two: Levy Mwanawasa’s sister has been drafted into the NEC and three, Muteteka, Levy’s very close relative, Moses Muteteka is back as deputy minister. Rumour has it that Maureen might be posted as ambassador to the US. Watch this space mwebantu.

It is really suprising the way RB is coming out. We keep saying zambia has no money this and that forgetting that when donors release funds only few individuals become beneficiaries. Just look at ministers gratuity, monies spent on NCC and I ready the other day that the sitting has been extend by 10 months. Evacuations for the so called specialist treatment. It’s only here in Africa where the term exists. Dont these politicians feel ashamed to go to SA for treatment because here hospitals are ill equipped. ****** i.d.i.o.t. RB’s endless trips, the guy is a tourist of the millenium. Thandiwe keeps receiving a salary from ministry of education when in the actual fact stopped teaching in 2006.
Maureen is tactful, she has avoided 2011in order to get along with RB and team. Where is this man Lameck Chibombamilimo he used to campaign for Madam Maureen. It is amazing how many former first ladies want to be presidents. It goes to show that they have some degree of under-estimation of their husbands when they realise that if HE could do it, why can’t I? Could it be that these ‘men’ rely on these women for advice and leadership? It goes to show that there may be nothing special about that office after all! Anyone can be president but not everyone can be a ‘damn good president.’
The First ladies are just human like an other women. What makes them feel big is the attention they receive. Donations from grazy chaps who want to win some govt contracts. Dont see any problem in Maureen going for the top job as is her democratic right. Dont know whether she is popular enough to do it so perhaps that is why she is going for 2016 so that she has time to build her rather tarnished image – remember she was booed during the malilo of her husband. I unlike some bloggers have no problem with her being a woman. To me there is no difference between capabilitiies of a woman and that of a man. In many of our traditional cultures in Zambia, it was not unheard of for women to hold political office. So if Maureen or any other woman wants to aspire for the top job then go for it.
