Lusaka City Council (LCC) Public Relations officer Henry Kapata says the council has pegged the hiring of hearses between K100, 000 and K200, 000, respectively.
Mr. Kapata disclosed to ZANIS in an interview that that price was arrived at after a consultative meeting with ward councilors.
He said it was unanimously resolved that to charge K100, 000 for children’s funeral but it was not yet decided on how much it will be for adults.
He however said there is a possibility for LCC to charge K200, 000 overall per hearse as suggestions being made are ranging between K200, 000 and K250, 000 for hiring.
Mr. Kapata said the money accrued from the charges will help the council with the purchase fuel and maintaining of the vehicles.
He said the council will not be making any profits from the hearses which will be helping residents bury their relatives in dignity.
He emphasized that only the less privileged communities in Lusaka will have access to the hearses.
Last month, Government distributed the 100 Hearses to all the 72 districts through out the country and directed the council be charging a minimal fee of not more than K300, 000 for their usage.

The LCC must also think of maintaining the grave yards.
How much are the good ol vans that people use for burial in contrast with the hearses. Why should be opt for the heareses when the coffin can ride in tha back of a van .

I am very surprised with the thinking of these monkeys in govt. Why should a dead person be more dignified than a living person who is ill? Why didn’t these monkeys think of ambulances before settling on hearses? Is it because they were going to get a bribe? Now look, whatever bribe Teta got, what will it ever do for him? You cannot play with people’s lives like that. Teta thought money would shield him from death but that was all vanity. Where is he today and where is the stolen money? Think constructively while in govt or you will find yourself underground without anything. Don’t steal but help people because people could save your life and not money. 20 trips in a week that is 4,000,000 kwacha X 4 weeks that will be approx. 16,000, 000 million a month. This will be another Kapoko case. If it is not for profit then the council do it free of charge on a booking basis, many for mantaining the rubb…ish hearses should come from the tax paople are already paying
