Goverment takes over TOTALS’s shares in Indeni

Share

Government has opened discussions with TOTAL to take over the company’s shares in Indeni.

This follows the decision by TOTAL to pull out of the country’s only oil refinery.

Mr MUMBA said the pull out of TOTAL from Indeni is not new because government was aware of the decision.

Mr MUMBA said TOTAL had stopped supplying crude to Indeni two years ago and informed government of its intention to sale the 50 per cent shares held in Indeni.

He, however, said the pull out of Total from Indeni has nothing to do with the current petrol shortage being experienced in the country.

Government and TOTAL both hold 50 percent shares in Indeni.

  1. every time they say it has nothing to do with it just know that it has everything to do with it! why not allow the Chinese to build another oil refinery? i am sure they will be interested! let those honkies go they want to be begged. see how Anglo messed up with the mines! they now regret their decision to leave because there friends are hauling ass right now!

  2. Why has the Govt decided to tell us about Total’s intentions now when we have Fuel shortages because of indeni?? Why did they not tell us last year? And they expect us not to connect this move with the current situation! Even the most stupid fool would surely read the current situation in terms of Total’s decision. So Govt will have 50% shares? This same Govt which cannot even run small piggery or poultry projects?

  3. Motorists and travellers should now brace for harder times of fuel shortages.
The Zambian government going into the business of importing and supplying fuel when they cannot even govern properly?
    Let us wait and see.

  4. This Peter Mumba is a civil servant who should not be speaking on behalf of GRZ. People should not forget that it this Peter Mumba who was so vocal on the introduction of the new passports. He was adamant that all would go smoothly. Where are we now with these new passports? My beloved Zambia!!!!!

  5. African Govts never learn, particulary Zambian, There has been seek and hide games between GRZ and Total. There was no ppoint for GRZ to leave the running a strategic industry like Indeni to private hands. This is what the result is for a careless govt. If GRZ had known well in advance i.e 2 years ago when Total stopped supplying oil, to Indeni whywas action not taken. There are a lot of small players coming on board if those French feel they not reaping enough from their investment in Zambia let them pack their bags and go to Paris or West Africa which is their traditional market. As for Lafarge Cement, we are not seeing any benefits, the price of cement is still high despite the production volume having doubled. Or is their policy to recoup capital outlay within shortest possible period?

  6. #11 Observer, Zambians are not strategic, they are quick at inviting foreign investors before they look at themselves!! It is risky to do business in Zambia hence any external investor would want to rcoup their investment in the quickest period!!! A local investor wouldn’t do the same

  7. another freaking side show at the zambia circus.

let’s all brace our selves for a never ending fuel shortage. because no politician or bureaucrat has the expertise or profit-and-loss discipline to supply affordable fuel for the zambian economy. only private businesses and entreprenuers who live-and-die by the bottom line can do that.

let’s not waste any more time. let’s sell zambia to taiwan now! before it’s too late.

  8. Why is Total pulling out of the country’s only oil refinery? It’s foreseen disaster coming and it doesn’t want to lose out and wants “the sleeping” Zambian govt to bear the loss. We have all seen how well the Fuel industry has been performing. Which company in this business would dream of selling a business “drive”? Not even Total International would ever dream of parting away with such a lucrative business unless something is wrong somewhere.
I recommend you scrutinise Total and its management and also start monitoring Konga’s accounts, all those involved in this talk including those of their family members. you never know, they may be trying to get rich at the expense of the Zambians. Money is sweet.
