A 42-year-old man of Mansa is battling for his life in Mansa general hospital after being shot and wounded while fishing on the DR Congo side along the Luapula River in Mansa.
Luapula Province Police Chief, Auxensio Mbewe confirmed the incident to ZANIS and named the victim as Mwansa Chimbaya of Kalukuluku village in Chief Chinsunka’s area.
Mr Mbewe said Chimbaya was shot in the left leg around 18.00 last Friday as he fished on foreign waters on the Luapula River.
He said Chimbaya sustained a deep wound on his leg and is currently being nursed at Mansa general hospital.
Narrating the ordeal, Chimbaya said he had just cast his net on the Congo DR side along the Luapula River and while he was returning, he just heard gunshot adding that he does not know the people who shot at him.
Mr Mbewe said this is not the first time that a Zambian has been shot on the Luapula River on the Congo DR side.
He said the problem is that local people are fond of crossing over into the Congo DR waters on the Luapula River to engage in illegal fishing.
The police chief explained that Zambian fishermen are attracted by good stocks of fish on the Congo DR side because the Zambian side is said to be depleted
He said police have been doing everything possible to sensitize people to stop crossing into the neighbouring country waters to minimise the incidents.
“We have carried out sensitisations telling our people to desist from fishing in the Congolese waters on the Luapula River. They know that but sometimes they just tend to follow the fish which is plenty on the other side,” Mr Mbewe said.

Whose interests is the cop serving? How can he rush to condemn the people whose taxes he is paid from? I thought as a Zambia public worker he was supposed to serve the interests of the Zedians until full investigations are done. Look at dem Americans, they support their nationals even when it is clear that they are at fault. No wonder some Zedians are ashamed of being zedians.
Chabipa mwe!!! I often wonder though why it is that Zambian waters always have depleted fish stocks compared to neighbouring countries, whether Luapula river, Kariba dam, Zambezi river…? Perhaps we need to revisit our fishing policy.
It has been too much on the part of neighbours shooting at our citizens, lst time it was Namibian security personal, then Zimbabeans now its Congloese. No matter how pipo get sensetized on the such dangers they take it for granted that the borders are artificial. It will be better for Zambian officials to have some sort of a small naval force to patrol our lakes and rivers in border areas. As long as we leave such areas unpoliced in future such water ways shall be used to launch external attacks on mother Zambia. Its not too late.We will be having our citizens maimed from time to time.
Congolese are shooting our people. Zimbabweans are also shooting our people on Zambezi river. Why can’t we also start shooting them.
Too bad man,i hope you will recover and never go to catch fish on the congolese side, those guys have no mercy.
What was this brother doing in that land where the gun rules? He should have styaed within our borders, where the MMD misrules.
Yemweni chabipa, kaili imbowa shonse shabutukila ku congo but it’s risk bawishi. i agree with # 2 they should sort of ban fishing for 3yrs to allow fish to breed without interference .Imwe ati ni kapenta kanshi ni tu baby fish.in the mean time we can do with the K dishes such katapa, kalembula, kalungu ntanda, kachesha, kalebwe and so on.good luck.
