Hunger crisis looms in Mambwe

Share

Mambwe District Commissioner Firimino Banda has appealed to government to send relief food to avert the looming hunger in the area.

Mr Banda said some households had already started rationing meals which are supplemented by mangoes. He was speaking in an interview with ZANIS in Mambwe district yesterday.

He disclosed that the District Disaster Management Committee (DDMC) had already visited chief’s Msoro and Malama areas to assess the situation.
Mr Banda attributed the looming hunger to a partial drought and human-animal conflict experienced in the 2008/09 farming season where most of the crops were destroyed by wild animals.

“The larger part of the district is vulnerable to hunger because of the human-animal conflict. Even the mangoes which the people are takimg as supplement are also accessed by animals, especially elephants,” he said.

Mr Banda revealed that relevant authorities had already been notified of the looming hunger, adding that his team would soon visit other parts of the district to ascertain the amount of relief food needed.

“People are ready to work for the food if it is made available, especially where construction of classroom blocks is done at Mfuwe Basic School as parents are expected to contribute towards the construction works,” he said.

  3. Mr Banda said some households in MAMBWE District had already started rationing meals which are supplemented by mangoes. Dont worry we are the MMD the hours is working. First we must balance the cheque for FTJ trip to Nigeria. Imwe kumambwe District wait for election 2011 we shall bring salt, meal meal, and Chitenge material, just die a little at the moment. As you know Chilubas trip is consitutional rights. Imwe ku Mambwe uko no consitutional rights. So Ka DC Banda be careful tell your pipo to wait 20011 they would have enough food

  4. razar,
” i knew zambians paying the price for giving free maize to other countries. ”

Really? How so? I think there is too much spaced dedicated to wildlife, which is the real underlying reason why people are running out of food in this instance, not maize being sent abroad.
