MMD national secretary Katele Kalumba

The Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) National Secretary, Katele Kalumba has said the party’s  National Executive Committee (NEC) has not changed its endorsement of Rupiah Banda as its Presidential candidate in the 2011 general elections.

Speaking in Mazabuka, yesterday, Dr Kalumba reiterated that whether the party goes to the convention or not, President Banda remains the party’s sole candidate for the Republican Presidency.

And Dr Kalumba further said that  the party’s supreme body will meet this weekend to decide whether to dissolve the party organs to pave way for party elections in readiness for the party convention or not.

Dr Kalumba said the meeting, which will be chaired by President Banda, will set guidelines on how the elections would be conducted should NEC resolve to dissolve the lower organs.

He said the party will not tolerate any unauthorised dissolution of party organs in Mazabuka and Monze districts because it weakens the popularity of the ruling party.

Dr Kalumba said the dissolution of party organs in the two districts is a recipe for anarchy and could help the opposition to strengthen their support.

He also said his office is aware of the illegal activities of a clique of senior party officials who are bent on creating disturbances in the party through fake dissolutions.[quote]

Meanwhile, the MMD in Mazabuka has challenged Mr Jeff Kaande, the deputy national secretary, to state which candidate he is backing for Presidency in the 2011 elections.

District Youth Chairman, Gesho Gaanga told ZANIS in Mazabuka today that the district and constituency officials are disappointed with the deputy national secretary for deliberately telling lies about the dissolution of the district and constituency executives.

He said it was not true that the party organs in Mazabuka requested to be dissolved as stated by Mr Kaande.

And Mazabuka District Vice Chairman, Takawira Mahere, challenged Mr Kaande to speak the truth if he has the interest of the party at heart.

Mr Mahere said the illegal dissolution of the party by Mr Kaande is highly suspicious, especially that it has no blessings of the party’s national executive committee.

Efforts to get a comment from Mr Kaande proved futile.

  1. I don’t care about this sole candidancy business. What is exciting to me today is that the NCC has finally agreed that only degree holders shall be eligible to contest the position of Republican Presidency because he or she will be able to understand national and international issues better.

  2. No person should be disqualified because they don’t hold a degree, that is just rural politics. Having a degree does not make one intelligent or have leadership qualities. A Leaders is one who inspires. They usually surround themselves with highly intelligent technocrats. A degree has nothing to do with ones ability to rule. This is being retrogressive. Most Ph.D holders are shallow, gone are the days when having a degree meant you are the most informed.

  3. Lets start with KK, The time he became president the highest he had gone in education was Grade 9, in today’s grading. He ruled Zambia deligently. There came Chiluba he also didnt have a degree, he also tried his best dispite what is unfolding now, yes he acquired a degree whilst in State House and that opened his eyes and started stealing. Zuma of South Africa has no degree but he ruling. These guys shouldnt forget that these same trenches there digging, come one day they will be the same ones failling into the same pits. It’s all about fixing SATA.

  4. # 1. Is this really true or are you part of the rumourazzi? If it is, Sata will go buy himself one probably from India – does this clause also say one should have studied for the degree?

  5. # 3 and 6 good morning, I agree with you. A degree has got nothing to do with a person being a good leader.Kaunda would be the best President that our country has ever had despite having a degree.Richard Robinson the owner of Virgin Airline, Virgin Radio and many more Virgin etc did not complete high school but he is one of the greatest business men in this world. Becoz of good leadership, he has excelled and yet he doesn’t even have a grade 12 certificate.A degree that Nyama Soya has doesn’t make him a good leader in fact he is the worst that our eyes have ever seen in Zed. Sata can make a good leader its a pit most of Zedians do not want to give him a chance.

  6. Impressive stuff. On another note, the Times of Zambia Newspaper of today reports that “THE National Constitutional Conference (NCC) yesterday unanimously adopted an article that requires a presidential candidate to have the minimum academic qualification of a degree”. Also, the decision to have a qualification of “Citizen by birth” is good so that President RB Banda who was born in Zim can be disqualified.

I hope this NCC will give us a new Constitution by 2011 elections.

Have a good day you all.

  7. #12, It is good to have a president with a degree, but this should be on the platform of campaigning rather than in the Constitution. Look at Dr Kalumba, he is today bringing the “wamuyaya” nonsense with all his degrees.

  8. Ba katele just start campaigning. The game is over for Rupiah. Tamumfwile ati ni born in Zambia only? Banda is out of the ball game? Unless MMD twists what NCC just voted on. Bye Rupiah Banda. No more trips or roads to the game parks.

  9. To those that have problems with Times of Zambia Newspaper of today reports that “THE National Constitutional Conference (NCC) yesterday unanimously adopted an article that requires a presidential candidate to have the minimum academic qualification of a degree” and the decision to have a qualification of “Citizen by birth” and comparing South Africa’s President Zuma, please note that Zambia is about 45 yrs of being independent while our counterparts are only 15 yrs in normal rule system.

Therefore, our democracy is much more advanced that South Africa’s.

As of KK, I believe he went up to Standard 10 which is equivalant to G12 of now.

    Keep well all.

  10. For your information, Sata will be concluding his degree in political science this month-end and his mission is to atleast finish his masters in the same before December 2010. According to his university performance report, he has managed to score 6 A+s, 4 As and a B+ in statics. These are excellent results!! Come 2011, King Cobra will have declare his MSC political science from Leeds University through distance learning known as programmed learning. Nowadays, one does not need to stay in school to obtain a diploma etc. Therefore, NCC are wasting their time for he will be legible to stand. So, Machungwa and Faustina are wasting their time.

  11. People do not waste your breath a Degree is not an issue pa ZED you will be surprised very soon Sata will produce a degree. So do not get very excited for now just wait and watch. Infact not all degree holders are performers.

  12. Listen to this guys Many people or nations fails to thrive because they are unwilling to change. change is always hardest for the man who is in a rut like MMD. for they have scaled down their living to that which they can handle comfortably and welcomes no change or challenge that could lift them up.

KATELE and other,IF YOU FIND YOURSELF IN A HOLE stop digging. when things go wrong- dont go with them. STUBBORNNESS and UNWILLING to change is the energy of FOOLS.

  13. :)>- Maestro you were the first I thought about after reading the NCC descision. Welcome back bro. Your title has been taken over by your mulamu Veteran. Please no copy and paste. Welcome back though the more conctroversy the better.

  14. IT IS SAID THAT HE THAT WILL NOT APLLY NEW REMEDIES MUST EXPECT NEW EVILS –francis B.
it interesting to note that our Lord said that he will instruct and guide us along the best pathway for our life: he will adivise us and watch our progress… SO WHY FEAR TO CHANGE???????

  15. 24 Mwanawakwitu thanks and nice copying you. I hope those that have no Grade 12 full School Certificate (qualification for MP by NCC adoption) or its equivalent will begin to make plans to obtain such educational papers. This is because the Presidency elections still requires a Candidate to qualify for MP election.

Those who wish to buy degrees or get them from non-recognised Universities have to keep this one in mind as they try to rule Zambia.

  16. you can NOT MAKE AN OMELET without breaking EGGS. ACCOMPILSHMENTS automatically results in CHANGE. one Change makes way for the NEXT, giving us the opportunity to GROW. you must change to master change

  17. Not even in the UK can a person be disqualified on the basis that he/she does not hold a degree. You guyz are so interested in invite civil war in Zambia, he? Go ahead.

  18. Kabonde on Tuesday said threatening violence did not constitute an offence following threats by MMD cadres on Monday to gang-rape FDD president Edith Nawakwi for her critical stance on governance matters.”

    POLICING IN ZAMBIA FOR YOU!

  19. RB has gathered all great politicians ON HIS SIDE and broght peace VK ,KK, FTJ ,KALUMBA and all the chiefs are well paid including the litunga .what more can the chiefs ask for?? plus sata can NOT campain in those areas where he and chiefs have beef…i think he RB will win and he gave a very respective speach on climate change oooohhh i was impresed mr president keep it up..on the other side the lamba people are now in good terms with RB..THIS IS WHATS ON THE GROUND..

  20. How does the NCC clause on birth allow President RB Banda to be sole MMD candidate for Zambian President in 2011? Is Katele Kalumba aware of recent developments at NCC or he is just giving ba-RB some false hope?

  21. #32, Peter,

Your comment is very disappointing, actually it sounds like threatening violence. Though it is a fact that all this degree nonsense is aimed at Sata it is wrong for you to suggest that this is being done because Sata is a bemba. Sata is being targeted because he is one of the very few Zambians who speaks his mind out frankly and boldly for the sake of Zambia and in the process he has stepped on a number of toes without fear. When it comes to national issues Sata speaks for all regardless of tribe. So Peter hold your fire and relax!

  22. yayayayayayaya… ba kalumba Chief Bootlicker , the down fall of the MMD. The beginning of the End.
Spent forces trying to regroup. i dont support anyone in particular but i think MMD ARE digging their own grave.

  23. Kalumba please, ubuloshi bobe bwachilamo. MMD can adopt Bwerzani or Kolwe the babtist and still lose big time. Anyway, with the degree requirement, Sata is history because at Grade 2, he needs to go back to school to acquire the necessary requirements to be able to run, maybe in 20 years when he is 100 years old. This is what they did to Kaunda and I hope this serpent will swallow the bitter taste of its own medicine silently. True, if I was a christian it will no doubt be for my strong belief in Christ’s doctrine of an eye for an eye. Now watch the Pact crumble to pieces.

  24. Its really fun. They should specify, are they saying any degree? One can have a degree in animal insemination and that has nothing to do with leadership. Bafi color you must grow, this same constitution will work against you one day.

  25. By the way he is studying animal husbandry, its a 2 year crush course programe which he started a couple of months ago in time for the 211 elections ,… so no pressure..PF/UPND PACT , vice president and succesor HH. ba Sata No worries.

  26. What do they mean by citizen by birth? Recall, Article 5 of the current constitution says: A person born in or outside Zambia after the commencement of this Constitution shall become a citizen of Zambia at the date of his birth if on that date at least one of his parents is a citizen of Zambia.

  27. Katele is actually indirectly de-campaigning RBB and the MMD…but of course both RBB and the MMD are too cerebrally challenged to notice!

ZAMBIA PROPHET: Have I missed something here? What has this story got to do with Barotseland? Did you do any geography at school Bwana!!!??

FINALLY, those that are against the degree qualification for presidency are just being party cadres with no interest for Zambia at all. How can a normal human-being cherish and value ignorance over education??? Guys BEING A PRESIDENT IS NOT A RIGHT!!! BEING A PRESIDENT IS A PRIVILEGE WHICH YOU HAVE TO EARN!! If every Jim and John could be a Bank of Zambia governor, where would we be by now?? Stop embarrassing Zambia with your political short-sightedness. We cannot be making laws that suit an individual.

  28. Some people can kiss A** big time! From someone who just came from Zambia a week ago, I can honestly say there is no president in Zambia. RB has been traveling constantly. Stops journalists from interviewing him at the airport. The people in Zambia are fed up, this guy has to go. He has no chance of winning, and even if he won so many people have said they will fight to get him out!

  29. Take Katele’s words with a pinch of salt. He is just paving way for himself and will pull a surprise at the convention knowing everyone is out of the picture. You should all be very careful with his statements
