Government has assured residents of Lusaka that it is doing everything possible to ensure that problems that have been caused by floods in the province are rectified.

Lusaka District Commissioner Christah Kalulu says government realizes the extent of damage floods have caused to infrastructure, human life and people’s livelihood and will therefore not spare any effort to ensure that these problems are fixed.

Ms. Kalulu who is also Lusaka District Disaster Mitigation Committee Chairperson said government has since mobilized resources and equipment to deal with the complex flood situation in the province.

She said her office has already carried out an assessment of the extent of the damage caused to the city and is working out strategies that will help halt the further spread of disease and damage to infrastructure.

Ms. Kalulu told a media briefing in Lusaka today that her office is working tirelessly with members of parliament in areas that have been severely affected by floods in any effort to mitigate the impact of the problem on the people.

She disclosed that construction of bridges on five crossing points in Mandevu constituency where three deaths were recorded would commence soon in order to prevent further loss of life.

The Lusaka DC said her office was also working closely with government wings such as the Lusaka City Council and Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company in putting up water tanks and distributing chlorine, door to door, in areas like Chipata Overspill which is highly prone to cholera outbreaks.

She said her office was also working with the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) in sensitizing people on good hygiene using the use of mobile public address system in an effort to stop the spread of cholera.

Ms Kalulu said contrary to views expressed by some Lusaka residents that government is not doing much to rectify the problem, government was working hard to normalize the situation.

She said the province was big and hence government was not able to work on problems facing the people in different locations of the province at once.

Ms. Kalulu has, however, appealed to Lusaka residents in areas yet to be worked on to remain patient.

  1. All these problems could have been avoided if only Lusaka was properly planned. The city sits on a limestone which makes the natural drainage very difficulty but this could have been avoided if only a proper plan was put in place to develop a proper drainage system and it is a pity that the citys residential areas have been increasing without neccessary steps being taken to improve the drainage system(soak ways).:-?

  2. The comedy continues. The floods in Lusaka are a national disaster and what is needed is comment or action from cabinet / minister and not comments from a district commissioner. it all shows the lack of seriousness in the whole matter. Where is the minister of Local Government? better stil the VP since he is responsible for disasters in the country?

Is there a place for the hopeless sinner
Who has hurt all mankind just to save his own?
    Believe me

  6. What a poor Lusaka district commissioner, for how long will keep making assessement? for how long are you going to keep making strategies? for how long are you going to keep lying to the people of zambia? These many areas experience floods every year due to poor planning and management of public resources. You stay in a nice location with good roads, you sleep peacefully, eat well, you keep drinking coffee in your office while faking straegising while tax payers a stack out there due to floods and all you can bring out of your big mouth is words without works, shame on you and your government!!!!!

  7. I have heard it said that prevention is better than a cure. Flooding seems to occur at the same time of year each year with the same devastating results. Surely strategies to prevent the problem of flooding would cost the government less long term and save more lives than simply reacting to the problem each year?

To ‘Mo Taim’ @ 2 that is a very interesting observation- has the government ever proposed a way of dealing with the fact that our city sits on limestone? is there any way of dealing with the problem?

  8. We are tired of KALULU STORIES please just come up with a permanent solution. Its better late than never start working on drainages in all affected areas not only were pipo died. What type of a govt are you that wait for pipo to suffer to take action. This calamity has been going on for more 50years, dignity is very important be it poor or rich person. Restore our dignity and work on drainages, no MORE TALKING PL………..Z
