Cholera killed at least 12 people in Zambia’s capital Lusaka after floods caused by torrential rains contaminated drinking water, a health ministry official said on Tuesday.

Health Ministry spokesman Rueben Mbewe said 562 cases of cholera were recorded in Lusaka out of 694 reported cases across the southern African country last week and most of the sick came from areas hit by serious flooding.

“The floods have worsened the situation in that this has caused the flooding of pit latrines causing the effluent to… mix with drinking water,” Mbewe said.

Mbewe said authorities were providing chlorine to help people purify drinking water.

The government said last week that eight people had died earlier this month after drowning and hundreds more were displaced by floods.

Officials at the Kariba dam on the border with Zimbabwe were forced to open flood gates, increasing the chances of more downstream flooding on the Zambezi river in Mozambique.

Mozambique is already on flood alert – one level below declaring a disaster.

Last year, heavy rains in Zambia and Malawi caused flooding in Mozambique that killed 45 people and left 285,000 homeless

  1. And all this while the president is busy crossing borders with the pendulum fiollowing suit .Vinabwela mochedwa:-?

  2. Shame on RB. He is more concerned with touring the world than in the affairs of the country.

    RED CARD,RED CARD,RED CARD

  3. Chi George Kunda was busy saying “I came to check on my people whether they are ok, now I have seen that they are ok. Talk of cholera is not true it;s just in the mind of the opposition”. This was at Independence stadium resettlement site where the MMD has relocated pipo from flooded areas in Lusaka. The question is why has he denied Cholera when figures from ba LT a state sponsored website is reporting more than 500 casesin Lusaka alone. Ata chi George uselezzi

  4. I am the one responsible for this cholera outbreak. I have been allowing MMD cadres to build mud huts in unplanned settlements on land belonging to investors all around Lusaka. Why? Because they are Zambians and can settle on any land. No one can touch me, not even RB, because I’m a political heavy weight. All thses illegal settlements are breading grounds for cholera but I know best what is good for MMD. I’m taking revenege on them for deporting me … ha ha ha. UNIP is back, UNIP is fire!!

  5. Iyi ni normal pa Zed!!! :d Actually politicians make more money in such situations (donor funding, allowances, etc)

  6. I can assure you, all shushus in the foreign missions will not contribute on this topic. It very sad indeed. We have had very bad experiances with Cholera in the past. Surely if our leaders have been to school, these are the things they can prevent. Or do we need the Chinese to assist. RB,RB,RB….we are tired of your incompetence. Were are you spending the money you are borrowing? Do you even know how it is being spent?

  7. It’s a pity that Zambian politicians and technocrats equally don’t know what the term PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE means!!! These deaths from Cholera could easily have been avoided. Shame on you RB,…It’s indeed RED CARD for you! VIVA GM(George Mpombo)!!!

  8. Meanwhile the old goat is galavanting the globe and he even has the audacity to justify his behaviour, This man looks us small and he thinks we are children. No wonder he is married to a child. How can people be dying from Cholera in this day and age. 45 years after Independence and we cant even get our drainage right. We cant build decent shelter for our people. 45 years Lusaka has had drainage problems all we do is get by . If you dont die this year life goes on till the year Cholera gets you. In the meantime the hippo is flying all of the place and has the guts to tell us that he is being Neighbourly. That S.O.B has had his last year in office this year. REDCARD the MF

  9. How can GRZ combat cholera when the minister can’t even wear the right gear for protection but instead he could ends up being a carrier of the germ due to luck of protective clothing (Health & Safety). In my opinion, the right GRZ official to have visited should have come from health departments and not some Mangani chap.

  10. Zambia has cholera year in, year out. This is such a ridiculous and a disgraceful situation. Is that prez back from using his frequent flyer miles?

  11. Ironically, there is an article about Zambia’s economic growth on LT… Does MMD believe Cholera in Z is moving forward ? Is cholera a sign of good govt policy ? Can MMD truly say the people of Z are in their hearts? Do they really love Z as a country and its people? Actions speak louder than words.

  12. MMD is busy accusing Sata of all sorts of rubbish while poor Zambians go through the trauma of floods- including Shikapwasha’s Area in Keembe. If Tax was to be paid cash insteady of through pay roll I would rather go to jail than pay it support some body’s globe trottings.
