Sinazongwe district in Southern province has been cut off from the rest of the country for the fourth time following collapse of the temporal bridge that was built last month along Maamba/Batoka road.

Sinazongwe District Commissioner (DC) Oliver Pelete confirmed the development that a truck carrying coal from Maamba Collieries (MCL) damaged the bridge when it passed on it.

A check at the site found a truck loaded with coal has cut off the entire bridge that was mounted last month.

The temporal bridge was built by the Zambia Army to connect the district that was cut off from the rest of country for more than a month.

In February a bridge at Sikalamba stream collapsed and three culverts collapsed at Sinakasikili, Mweezyha, and near Bampu area following heavy rains and affected business operation in the entire district.

Malima ward Councilor Fisher Zimana has also said Malima area is still cut off from the rest of the district as vehicles are failing to pass at Nangombe stream.

Mr. Zimana said people were traveling long distance to come to Sinazeze and to connect to Choma district to get essential food stuffs and to conduct their business.

Sinazongwe district received the highest rainfall this year than ever before in the life history of the people.

  1. But how was such an overloaded truck allowed on a temporary bridge. Cant we have some kind of professional discipline in our country. Do we have to wait for fires before we establish a fire brigade?

  2. That is one of the succesfull developments this goverment is claiming and bosting for.
They are asking for another chance. I wonder!
Translated in English my mother language which is ICIBEMBA has a saying which goes.
” YOU WILL NEVER GET A SECOND CHANCE TO GIVE YOUR FIRST IMPRESSION” For sure how many years MMD has been in power? and Howmany chances have been given to them ?.

  3. Come on Zambian Government!! Is this what you call a bridge? It’s very fortunate there’s no rain water running under this so called bridge and there are no deaths. This govt is very irresponsible when it comes to peoples lives and safety of the Nation. POOR GOVERNING BY OUR WELL TRAVELED PRESIDENT (Banda)

  4. THE ARMY SHOULD HAVE SPECIFIED THE WEIGHT LIMIT ON THIS BRIDGE. Clearly it does not look suitable for that truck.

  5. Very sad, but who is the Zambia Army Engineer who design and authorised that terrible bridge? Does he deserve to continue working in the Army or serving Zambians in whatever capacity if he was that reckless with human life?

On anther note, the POST of 21/04/2010 has reported that “Anybody who tells you that somebody is a candidate; if he tells you Hakainde is a candidate, he is lying. If he tells you Sata is a candidate, that person has a small brain because we have said this over and over again, again and again. Only a dull person, only a person with a small brain may not understand that this is the position we have given” attributed to UPND president and 2011 presidential candidate HH.

I hope all will now stop insulting the PACT’s position.

  8. According to the Mabey Manual on Bailey Bridges the bridge panels should have been reinforced by 3(three)panels and not the single one iam seeing in the picture, who ever designed the bridge should be arrested.

  9. Sorry people.the enginner was rushing to milanzi.cheap bridge to save money for milanzi i suppose or was it meant to collapse when the MP was travellin on it so that the next by elections would be in sinazongwe.shame it was a truck full of coal and not so poiltcal.

  10. There are no standards in Zambia! I wanted to blame the engineer envolve but I think I would unfair. Things just happen and one care. It will evil to bring a person before justice in a land that has no standards
