SOLWEZI Central United Party for National Development (UPND) Member of Parliament (MP), Watson Lumba was yesterday detained after he surrendered to police in Solwezi.

Mr Lumba, whom police had been looking for since Thursday when he allegedly incited cadres to assault a uniformed police officer in the just-ended Mufumbwe by-election, turned himself in around 08:00 hours.

Mr Lumba was accompanied by his lawyer, Derrick Mulenga of Derrick Mulenga and Company of Ndola and UPND North-Western Provincial youth chairperson, Victor Lumayi.

As police were recording a warn and caution statement from Mr Lumba, some UPND supporters led by provincial chairperson, Wishikoti Katambi were seen around the main police station.

Around 12:15 hours, Mr Lumba, who was dressed in black leather jacket, a grey T-shirt and blue jean trousers, was seen emerging from the divisional criminal investigations officer’s office and exchanged pleasantries with supporters.

He handed over his car keys to one of the supporters and got onto a police vehicle, which drove him to Chawama Police Station where he was detained.

Mr Mulenga said police had not formally charged and arrested his client, but only warned and cautioned him and were detaining him. He expected his client to be charged within 48 hours.

Mr Lumba, who was campaign manager for the newly-elected Mufumbwe MP Eliot Kamondo, faces three counts of threatening violence, assaulting a police officer and abduction with intent to murder.

Police spokesperson, Bonny Kapeso said the driver of a motor vehicle that killed two children in Mufumbwe reported himself to Kasempa Police Station.

He said Kajiro Muzungu had been charged with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving and would appear in court soon.

  1. You forgot to mention that the one who killed the children was the son of the losing MMD candident. Let justice be done regardless of who belongs to which party. Law should not be only for the opposition came 2011 things will change yes or yes

  2. Typical of the Times they think by mentioning that the killer driver is son of Mulondwe Muzungu they will tarnsh the MMD.Gutter journalism at its lowest level!!!!

  3. This is a waste of time when a real criminal has been left to move around after murdering 2 children and injuring a number of adults including a school going child. I hope UPND lawyers and the new UPND Mufumbwe MP will take this killer case to its logical conclusion.

    Have blessed day all.

Matt 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you.

  4. One test of democracy is a people driven constitution that treats every one equally. But in Zambia especially during the MMD/UNIP pact rule we have seen a situation were the opposition are treated with hatred while those in government or its sympathizers are treated like eggs. I have served in UN mission and i can only advise the leaders in ZP to act professionally because if they continue only favoring the MMD,they may fuel a conflict. Its difficult to win back the confidence of the people so act professionally before its too late.

  5. With an attempted murder of a Zambian officer in his neck, let the G squad make sure that they systematically dedicate this kidnapper to seasoned anti terrorism experts to severely denature his physiological systemwhilst in custody.Given him a none redeemable vegetative ending.Set a strong precedence to all would be kidnappers.

  6. Kidnapper Lumba detained

Welcome to real world where each one for himself in accounting for own sins. The blog fantasy of armchair trolls and party thuggery is nowhere with redeemption to Lumba. What a victim of ignorance and peer pressure!

  7. The law should take its course. Message should be sent that violence does not pay! If found quity, Zambians expect a verdict that will serve as a deterrent to political violence.

  8. One kidnapped the other killed:o Yet this i d i o t called thinks the one who kidnapped has more of a case that he needs “denaturing”. How fool ish can Africans be.

    We are talking lives here you f o o l !

  9. Conviction of Watson Lumba is in the best national interest. It will be a clear message to would be extremists that terrorism has no dividends. Peer pressure and trolling may have their pick hour but there always a point of individual accountability. For abduction and attempted murder of a peace officer Lumba must take in not less than 25 years at Mukobeko Maximum Prison with hard labor with his seat declared vacant. The verdict has to be a deterrent to extremism.

  10. Where are you hiding UPND/Pact bloggers? come on support your MP in his hour of need. Are you guilty before he is evn taken to court?

  11. #5 wise words indeed. The law in Zambia at this point is selective, however, people are watching. How does a govt hope to rule and gain the people’s respect if it’s selective in its application of law and order?

  12. The police are supposed to be non partisan but this is unlike zambians really. Fighting hasnt been our making. Please God help

  13. Mr Patriot and Senior citizen who ever you are do not sound Zambian or you are very dangerous people. What kind of country has Zambia turned into where instigators of violence are protected at the expense of those defending themselves? In every land on Earth self-defence has been accepted as defence in any court of law. Where are the hooligans who stoned the IG to submission? Has the IG demanded for their arrest? Is the police also looking for those who nearly murdered Hon Kakoma? Evidence is there for the police to use as the MMD hooligans said they were part of Boma and that no one could touch them. If this is the Zambia you are advocating for where some people are above the law then God have mercy on the people. Zambia is heading for doom.

  14. After all the victory braiis, it seems Hon Lumba is now alone to face the battle. Everybody else is busy in their corporate offices.

  15. This terrorist should be held accountable to his deeds.Surely you reap what you sow.Government should think of opening up a zambian Guantanermo on one of the islands on lake kariba or lake bangweulu for such terrorists.
