Mpombo, Magande ineligible for MMD presidency, says Mabenga

Share

THE MMD has said Kafulafuta Member of Parliament George Mpombo and his Chilanga counterpart Ng’andu Magande are ineligible to contest the presidency at the national convention because of their poor relations with the party leadership.

MMD national chairperson Michael Mabenga said in an interview in Lusaka yesterday that the constitution only allowed members in good standing with the ruling party to contest any position.

Mr Mabenga was commenting on Mr Mpombo who re-stated on Thursday last week that he was preparing to challenge President Rupiah Banda.

But Mr Mabenga said Mr Mpombo and Mr Magande, who has also gone public about his intention to run for the party presidency, were not enjoying any constitutional powers that could guarantee their candidature after de-campaigning their own party on many instances.

Mr Mabenga said all the provinces had picked Mr Banda as the sole candidate even if other members were allowed to apply for the position.

The ruling party’s electoral commission that would be set up before the convention would be given guidelines to follow, and top among them was that a member interested to contest any position should have good relations with the party leadership.

Mr Mabenga described as unfortunate the continued announcements by the two leaders that they would stand at the convention when they know that eligibility was premised on their conduct in the run-up to the convention.

Mr Mpombo told the TIMES in an interview that his intention to challenge President Banda was alive and was sure of victory because many members had declared so.

Mr Mabenga, however, dismissed the statement as wishful thinking, particularly in view of the continued rise in popularity of President Banda.

He said it was difficult to understand the intentions of the two MPs who had spoken ill of the party they wanted to lead.

  1. Mr CDF is that a new clause in the MMD constitution?
after Katele excused himself from party functions,i expected you to do like wise since you are a convict as well, alas, you are thick skinned with no single fiber of moral conscious

  2. The two fools should leave the Party. Magande betrayed Mazoka when he secretely left him to become Minister of Finance under Levy, now he thinks UPND can trust him again. Mpombo is a finished charp who at one time – one month after leaving office onlly had K48 000 in his A/c hence he had to borrow K10m fom Finlay whom he had betrayed when his relative was harassing Finlay-what a joke of a Presidential Candidate.
Mr. Mabenga We are totally behind president R Banda s good leadership and No Man, No law, No wall will stop us!!!

  3. #1 The MMD constitution is clear, any member who is not in good standing with the party is excluded from participating in party activies later on in party elections. Makande and Impombo are not in good standing with the Party. This rule is as Old as the party itself.

    can you quote and paste that clause in the mmd constitution please,it would make very interesting reading;
well, dont tell me having K48,000 in an account is also reason for one not to contest at an mmd convention, you would rather be behind mr mabenga who stole CDF funds, was convicted by the courts and recommended for his prosecution in the courts for stealing CDF funds.maybe you are thief as well, coz i dont see a reason why you should be behind a thief really

  5. Quote –”The MMD has said Kafulafuta Member of Parliament George Mpombo and his Chilanga counterpart Ng’andu Magande are ineligible to contest the presidency at the national convention because of their poor relations with the party leadership”. Do our party and gov’t leaders ever research or read before the utter anything to the general public. Where in the MMD constitution does it say if you are not in ‘good books’ with the party leadership you cant contest the party presidency? Democracy, ala ku tali twaba.

  6. “Mr Mabenga, however, dismissed the statement as wishful thinking, particularly in view of the continued rise in popularity of President Banda.”
So if RB is that popular, why not let him stand and defeat the two MPs? Surely this will be a very good indicator of how popular RB is……
    Mpombo vs RB vs Magande

  7. common duiker mpombo for president what a joke then tonga cow magande nakaso kakwe who do you think you are. its rb second term then after that we will cross the bridge when we reach it

  8. #3 WAPYA MUNZI- 2011- Before you called these 2 as fools you should have examined your mental capacity. You are saying that the MMD consititution(You were never party to the people who formulated that wonderful piece of document)is clear on the nonsense being vomitted by Mabenga- which part of the document is that? You can only be barred if you are on suspension or expelled. You fools from Unip have torn our document by allowing even new people to hold office when the constitution clearly states that that one has to be a member for not less that 2 years to be nominated for MP or hold office. Mpombo and Magande are right and must be allowed to stand and let the people decide. I hope you wont abandon MMD after 2011 like you have done to Unip

  9. hahaha..mabenga is a useless and coward chap..we need to get rid of such trash in the country..viva Magande and Mpombo..

  10. hahaha..mabenga is a useless and coward chap..we need to get rid of such trash in the country..viva Magande and Mpombo..

  11. Ba mabenga does it mean mmd has a fluid constitution that we just dream what you what. What is the problem with challlenging is it not clear that rb is not popular in the party. i let them challlenge him and definitely if is popular rb will win. That why i start doubting mmd it means the issue of rigging is true you do that even at presidential election because you a wild thinking.
