I am not in the process of buying Kasaba Bay-Moses Katumbi

Katanga Governor Moses Katumbi

Katanga Governor Moses Katumbi has denied that he is in the process of buying Kasaba Bay, a tourist resort in Northern Province. Mr Katumbi was speaking during a question-and-answer session with journalists that he had no interest to invest in the Zambian tourism sector.

“Although there is no law blocking me from buying any properties here in Zambia where I have a number of properties even today, I have no intentions to buy Kasaba Bay. Perhaps if it was a mine or an industry I could have interest in it,” he said.

Meanwhile, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)’s Katanga Province and Lafarge Cement yesterday signed a K50 billion (US$10 million) agreement for the supply of cement to the DRC region that is undertaking massive construction works.

Mr Katumbi signed the cement purchase deal on behalf of his provincial government while Lafarge Cement operations manager, Elililia Usiri represented the company’s management during the signing ceremony held at the Ndola cement manufacturing plant.

Mr Katumbi said the more than 50,000 tonnes of cement would be used for a $3 billion infrastructure reconstruction programme under which schools, hospitals, a drainage system and road infrastructure were being reconstructed.

The DRC government had embarked on a nationwide infrastructure development programme after the country’s cooperating partners wrote off a $10 billion debt when the country attained the Highly Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) completion point.

Mr Katumbi said DRC attainment of the HIPC completion point was as a result of the good record in human rights and good governance set by President Joseph Kabila’s administration.

Mr Usiri said the Lafarge plant had capacity to produce 400,000 tonnes of cement per year and currently 5,000 tonnes were ready for delivery to Katanga Province after the deal was signed.

The signing of the cement deal was witnessed by Copperbelt Province Permanent Secretary Villie Lombanya and Ndola Mayor Charles Chiwala, Katanga Province Infrastructure Development minister, Lubumbashi mayor, Kolwezi mayor and some DRC embassy officials.

  1. Police arrest man, 27, for sex with goat “The incident happened on 4th July 2010 around 02:00 hours . . . he was found having sex with the goat by the complainant who is female Febby Kunda, aged 56, also of Lunchu B in Kapiri Mposhi district he is actually admitting the charge,” Mpande said.

  2. My extensive research on DRC is that that country in less than 10 years time will be another South Africa. There is real development going on in Zaire. Highly mechanised agriculture is being undertaken such that we will soon be fed by DRC. There is also construction and reconstruction of new, and old towns, respectively. DRC has undertaken proper and broad dual carriage way motorway (road) networks to take on any road user vehicle of any weight. The sky scraper-buildings which they are currently constructed and under construction surpass some of the buildings you have seen in the highly industrialized countries. Take a look at the TITANIC building under construction or finished. It’s a show-piece.

  3. It’s a pity while Zambia is a peaceful (no wars) country, there isn’t any development going on. In fact Zambia is going backwards. And while we think there’s war in DRC you would be shocked at what they (leaders and people) are doing for their country. The heavy trucks that are damaging poorly constructed Zambia’s roads have nothing to do with Zambia’s development, but DRC. They are mainly heavy-duty road/highrise buildings construction, agricultural heavy-duty equipment, mining (traditional), Oil/water drilling machinery, and many more. Our leaders can’t even wakeup to this. Zambia will soon be buying DRC-made industrial machinery/equipment, materials, let alone food. I can supply some of the images on DRC’s development campaign if anyone needs to have an insight of whats…

  4. happening in DRC. Mind you its the only country in the region that have refused the introduction of Shoprite supermarkets. And their argument is that they have their own private owned supermarkets and that trading/retail shops an’t real development to the country. I urge Zambians to take time and make a little research on Zaire/DRC. Don’t be cheated about war in Congo- there’s real industrial development taking place, there.

  5. I JUST HOPE THE CEMENT ON THE LOCAL MKRT WONT BE TOO EXPENSE? … EN DID WITH CONSIDER THE EFFECTS ON OUR ROADS?

  6. The governance system is in tatters, there is no way Congo can come close to us even the likes of Alee-Bee will not manage to plunge the nation to Congo’s levels looking at the 16 months remaining b4 we kick him out.Was n Zed recently & the construction happening there is impressive. However all the best Congo DRC

  7. i hope our next president in the near future will be a sit at home president like Kabila and build the nation from the inside out not outside in..

Good to see the Congo going well …even players like Shabani Nonda own big construction companies building their own country

    ifwe katwishi

  8. if only zambia can do something major about the roads.we are still patching the roads welensiky(sp) built.

  9. Peter 3, you are right. Wanzelu 8, does not know what he is talkin’ about. The reason Laurent was eliminated was his vision which would have turned Congo DR into another RSA. He put his currency on one on one with the dollar and that did not go well with some quarters. He started to revamp his economy and infrastucture but was extaminated! Moses who is a vibrant manager (Zambia almost eliminated him, Mwanawasa) has a budget for T.P. Mazembe of $10 million this year. He gave teams participating in his tournament $10,000 each.

  10. Peter I find that very hard to believe while they could have infrastructure coming up like Zambia has anyway. I still believe their systems are still in taters and their transport network does no connect most of the country

  11. I live in the smaller congo and it is true the changes in DRC are dramatic. There airport in kinshasa is being reconstructed, flying around DRC is like using a bus (alot of planes to chose from at affordable cost), new rail lines are being built to link towns, roads are being rebuilt not the chinese nosense we see in Zed, schools and hospitals are being built etc.

  12. #13 The Chinese are one of the biggest investors in the DRC. Also dont forget that the country is very big. What is happening in Kinshasa might not necessarily be indicative of the country as a whole. The Eastern Congo is still subject to instability so lets not criticise our country for nothing.

  13. Pater 3, you are right. Wanzelu 8, does not know what he is talking about. Kabila Sr. was taken down because he put 1 dollar to 1 Zairean money. That would have seen Congo DR become another RSA. They are on their way to becoming so while we are still sleeping.

  14. Moses Katumbi who Mwanawas wanted to crucify is good manager and when someone saw the development he is doing in Katanga, he told him why he could not become “The Governor of all the Provinces” which made Kabila Jr. jealous. His budget for T.P. Mazembe is $10 million this year while Mopani had been giving Nkana FC $5,000 a month! Moses gave teams recently which participated in his tournament $10,000 each! Keep dreamin’ Wanzelu!

  15. REMEMBER THIS!
Sata’s head has been burried in the sand! Look at all PACT supporters on this blog are now rooting for RB! I like this because kaponyas are easily influenced! Yesterday everybody was saying bad staff about RB and today all is good! These are politics of poverty and opportunists! Even if the VISA MOU was to be extended to every Zambian, very few of you will afford to fly to Brazil! This MOU will benefit Brazil and not you and even Zaire will buy out Zambia!

  16. Its very true that Congo is growing at a rapid rate but after spending a few days there you’ll soon realise that the actual governance of the people is non exsistant. The rule of law is crazy and nothing happens without bribery. Nothing. So we can say that Zambia may be stagnant in terms of growth compared to the DRC but believe me Zambia is in a better place in every other way. I have no doubt that in years to come Congo will have an economy to reckon with but at the moment its a gangter country with no regard for human rights and with laws that are only determined by the wealthy.
