Pact in crisis, admits HH

Share

UNITED Party for National Development (UPND) president Hakainde Hichilema yesterday conceded that the pact formed last year with Patriotic Front (PF) leader Michael Sata is in a serious crisis.

And Luapula member of Parliament, Peter Machungwa has said Mr Sata and Mr Hichilema are being haunted by the wide age difference and ideological variances for their parties which are serious problems that can only be resolved temporarily.

Mr Hichilema, while describing the causes of divisions as minor, said he and Mr Sata should accept that the issue of blaming each other should be discussed.

In an interview in Lusaka, Mr Hichilema said the two political parties would call a crisis management committee meeting involving senior party members from both ends to resolve the problems and hoped the divisions would be mended urgently.

He said the problems faced by the pact were similar to the one faced by the MMD where Chilanga MP Peter Magande and former Defence minister George Mpombo had continued to criticise the Government.

Mr Hichilema described the divisions in the pact as minor and said it was still strong on the ground.

Meanwhile, Dr Machungwa said Mr Sata and Mr Hichilema lacked a common purpose resulting from the wide cultural and age differences.

He said the two leaders did not have anything in common to share.

Namwala United Party for National Development (UPND) Member of Parliament, Robbie Chizhyuka has said Mr Hichilema’s shifting positions show he is ill-prepared for the Republican presidency.

Major Chizhyuka said yesterday that Mr Hichilema’s insincerity on the political scene had confirmed the reason why Mr Sata had continued mocking him as a junior politician.

Mr Hichilema told a daily tabloid last weekend that he did not join active politics to become a president but to serve the people of Zambia.

And former PF secretary general Charles Chimumbwa has said the pact supporters who gathered to witness the launch should feel cheated by their two leaders whom he said had now left them in the cold following their failure to provide unity.

In an interview yesterday, Mr Chimumbwa said it had become clear that the two leaders were playing political tricks for their own gain without necessarily taking into consideration the feelings of their supporters.

Meanwhile, UPND youths plan to hold a consultative forum to discuss the future of the pact.

UPND national youth chairperson Joe Kalusa said in an interview yesterday the youths in the party, like their colleagues in PF, would be holding a consultative forum to discuss various issues that had been raised on the pact and to chart the way forward.

A PF youth leader was yesterday quoted on Radio Phoenix as saying his leadership was conducting a countrywide consultative forum with members to advise the national leadership whether the party should remain in the pact.

And the UPND in Southern Province has maintained that the pact in the area is intact and preparing for the 2011 general elections.

Provincial vice-chairperson John Chidyaka said there were no cracks in the pact except allegations that were only being perpetrated by the “enemies” of PF and UPND.

In Chingola, the UPND has made a desperate plea to its national leadership to ensure the party’s continued involvement in the pact.

District chairperson Raphael Chimupi said in an interview the grassroots members wanted their leaders to resolve any outstanding issues between the two parties.

Mr Chimupi said it was in his party’s best interest to continue in the pact with the PF and guarantee success in the coming elections.

But PF founder member Samson Zulu said in Lusaka yesterday the pact was falling apart because its leaders were more interested in going to State House than anything else.

Mr Zulu, who resigned from the PF after differing with its leader Michael Sata over the party’s convention, said the crumbling of the pact was a foregone conclusion.

He said Mr Sata and Mr Hichilema were both preoccupied with going to State House and had forgotten about important issues such as consulting their members before entering into a pact.

  1. Now thats what we are talking about. Can HH also discpliine these small party memebers making such grave announcments on national tele to sway the populace into believing that he has consented to their decisions.
Problem is even his own party is undermining him by making such unconsultative pronouncments to the public.
However, we know that they are being paid to do so.

  2. If HH is prudent enough-he may be able to read the writing on the wall-Why is MMD keen on disbanding the PACT and inviting him to join them-and becpome what in MMD when all the big fishes there are struggling for positions? The only answer for HH to be able to lead zambia some day lies in the PACT with PF-Sata is already old and that leaves HH a chancei.e. if at all the PACT conention decideds that Sata must stand for them, but if the decision goes in his favour-he is deserving to and besides i like the fact that Sata will be there to guide him through. It can work!!!!

  3. LT don’t you think what you are preaching is propaganda of the worst kind by publishing views of those who have opposed the PACT in the first place.Any thoughtful Zambian will understand that what ever comes out of Peter Machungwas mouth about PF is S.H.I.T, as the same to Chizyuka as these poeple are MMD in the shadows of the partys they claims claim to be from, since we are know that these are oppotunists and rebel parliamentarians

  4. “In an interview in Lusaka, Mr Hichilema said the two political parties would call a crisis management committee meeting involving senior party members from both ends to resolve the problems and hoped the divisions would be mended urgently.”

This is a joke right? Last time I stated that the launch of the pact was the biggest joke of the century, this comes second. Firstly, the PF is Mr. Sata and Mr. Sata is PF. In short, this is as good as having the meeting with Mr. Sata and other UPND senior members because the PF senior members will be operating on the orders of Mr. Sata so exactly what will they discuss which the UPND can fail to discuss with Mr. Sata seeing that the PF operates on Mr. Sata’s whim?

Give me a break. If you fail to talk to Mr. Sata, don’t bother with…

  5. HH unfortunately the damage is done, and this has been a wake up call for millions of Zambians of the kind of leadership pact govts are made of, they lack trust, a fundamental component of an alliance.Going by PF’s behaviour in the media, PF has put a stamp on this alliance, their speech is of a party that calls the shorts. Whereas HH continues to be bullied by the post into submission, where he is desperately left clinging to PF. Immaturity has now cost HH, he has somehow stopped to inspire any political clout, he has been reduced to a begger, who may soon realise his following (MPs) are not with him. This is a fact Sata is fully aware of. Poor Hakainde.

  6. Cntd from #7, Sata with his vast political experience is aware of the meaning of a leader without a strong hand on his following. What good is HH to him if even when he Sata is chosen as leader these followers of HH will probably still not vote for him. Sata is fully aware that he has broken ground politically. Sata is now known in areas which were said to be no go areas for him, he has the numbers he needs. Because of this, HH will have to accept the cobra is in control and he will stay in control for as long as God gives him life. Poor HH, he may have swallowed more cake than he can handle, with age comes wisdom, this he will learn soon enough.

  7. My humble appear is the PACT must and should wither the storm. They are the only ones that can remove the MMD. Single entity or separate ways, they will hand the MMD hand of rigging power to do so. The PACT members must resolve these problems now not next year.

  8. You chaps just formerly launched your so called pact, yet you can’t agree on simple terms.
Just disintegrate and condemn yourselves to your normal positions. SATA number 2 and HH number 3. HH you are condemned to position 3 in all general election outcomes. SATA you also condemned to position 2 because the MMD will always work its way to the top position.
I wanted to see clearly how the MMD manipulates elections had you guys colaborated.
Clearly SATA being number 2 could never allow number 3 grued HH to head the pact. Logic supports this. HH could also not allow the aged SATA to take up to position due to reasons deep rooted to his supporters. Can the two resolve the crisis? …..hardly.
Is that what Zambian citizens want? Only SATA and HH can tell us. LOOSERS.

  9. the pact has never existed but only between two pipo who are both power hungry. you cant have a party with two heads pulling in different directions. we had unip, fdd, upnd pact it flopped then pf and ulp it collapsed. remember lubinda is actually ulp. keep dreaming guys while MMD gains more ground. MMembe today has told you that you are wasting time bcos you will suffer a humiliating defeat. mwefipuba isukeni mitwe so teddy chilambe says

  10. And Luapula member of Parliament, Peter Machungwa has said Mr Sata and Mr Hichilema are being haunted by the wide age difference and ideological variances for their parties which are serious problems that can only be resolved tempor” machungwa you have no right to comment on the PACT. Pamenso nga kabombola. By the way what ideology are you talking about? In Zambia we just move with the wind.

  11. In simple terms you LOSERs are CONDEMNED to LOSING. Zambian biggerst LOSERS. Its a tie between HH and SATA unless they learn to tradeoff.
    Kupusa bati!! Sha!!

  12. We all know the pack has serious issues to resolve. What is also interesting is how quickly Mmembe and the Post ‘seems’ to be GRZ side each passing day. If you have read the last editions of post editorial you may agree with me. I guees Mmembe can not stand another in prison hence the ‘see no evil say no evil stance he has adpoted.

  13. Its good the Pact has acknowledged a crisis. The problem is Sata’s group who think they are above board with their spokesperson Mmembe.
Truth be told no single party can defeat thieving MMD.Charles Milupi is winning Luena but not even the Post is giving him coverage.Thats why PF supporters find it difficult to stomach defeat because their image builder does not reveal to them what is obtaining elsewhere.
    Goodluck PACT

  14. Zambia does not need any of this foolish and creedy muppets for president. If they cannot work with each other, just how do you expect them to work with the nation? These two chaps are nothing but vicious tribal bigots with humongous egos that count for nothing, zero!

  15. [email protected] cant stomarch what you are oozing from you foul mouth. Fred is not a spokesperson-then Lee Habasonde must be another. Without doubt-joyce is for MMD, i cant number how many MMD has paid off to speak good about them-Joyce,UPND jobseekers,ZCTU, and the list is endless. The Pact,i mean both leaders have acknowlegded the mess and it is the mess Sata termed “insecerity”. Why, because, HH’s junior jobseekers are making pronounciments without consulting with their president. Thats disorder. Sata does not allow that to happen and thats why Machungwa is a force to reckon with in MMD and his fellow rebels. M’membe must continue speaking against wrong and probably help the populace in deciding-simple, because as Fred states it; The only solution lies in PACT or MMD out. You…

  16. The culture of insulting the incumbent RB and the trade of insults among political leaders is LEAD BY the Post. Schematically, they supported HH’s decision to bolster PF. Zambians know that & are careful about Sata, a man of immense instability, severe lack of diplomacy & with traceable history of nepotism, intolerance to divergent views & dialog. Truly a prehistoric politician. This is according to the post’s analysis of the man in 2006. When did Post become a darling to Sata? Read the issues pertaining to Ncito, Zambian airways loan & ACC. There in lies their decision to go to bed with a devil.UPND must vote for RB whether or not they vote for their MP. They should recognize this a call to patriotism & national service. The country is too important to be handed over to a comedian.

  17. Wanselu@16, you are politically upstared-imbalanced and neurologically naive ma bro! Without Fred, we may not be able to know things happenining behind closed doors because even LT is biased, and we should not condem him for his hardworking money? NO. Work hard like you are doing. Why should you judge Fred-after all-i am not sure which piece of law his inceration came from when the law clear states and seperates a firm(post) and a partner(fred)? You see? There a lots of holes to be filled and it must take those who have suffered directly at the hands of the perpetrates to expose these vices. Drop you name Wanzelu and say chikopo! May be tizamvela.

  19. It would be nice if some bloggers learn to look at the other side of the story as well. PF cadres are equally on the loose making desparaging comments against UPND that are not helpfull to the pact. HH has also make substantial political inroads into areas that he was not known before. UPND is also most likely to gain the support of voters who are unhappy with the current MMD govt but can not stand the idea of Sata at state house. There are many such voters in Western, N/W, Central provinces as well as CB and Lusaka rural. The reason why the two parties came together is because they realised they can not win on their own. They need each other and they must compromise as equal partners, anything else is just delusion and will take them no where & MMD will still be there in 30yrs

  20. On “… Mr Hichilema said the two political parties would call a crisis management committee meeting involving senior party members from both ends to resolve the problems and hoped the divisions would be mended urgently” hats off to UPND 2011 presidential candidate HH, but can PF manage a crisis when they have been in crises ever since they came into being PF?

Anyway, I advise the mighty UPND Team never to move out of the PACT with Zambian people but just to ditch PF if Mr PF/Sata MC will be elected as 2011 PF-UPND PACT presidential candidate.

The above is evidenced in “Mr Zulu, … resigned from the PF after differing with its leader Michael Sata over the party’s convention…” since PF is allergic to elections or conventions as Mr PF fears that the people he…

  21. The above is evidenced in “Mr Zulu, … resigned from the PF after differing with its leader Michael Sata over the party’s convention…” since PF is allergic to elections or conventions as Mr PF fears that the people he appoints may never win their appointed positions at a convention through elections.

Thus, Mr PF/Sata MC believes that his plan of building PF as a National party will be hampered by the Bemba group that can win all the top PF positions. While his plan is a clever one, it has alienated those of us Zambians who believe in competition and democracy from supporting PF due to its being centred on one individual Mr PF/Sata and PF’s frustration of intra-party democracy.

The failure of PF to hold convention has affected the PACT’s progress.

    B blest all…

  22. The age difference between the two has made it impossible for them to have common ground. They are haunted by what they said of each other. Am sorry for people like Chidyaka who cant see that our party is an empty shell now and they need to work extra hard to restore the Mighty UPND to it’s original status.

  23. @ #24 Maestro Hhehhehhehhe for 2011 would-b President of Zambia HH

I wanted to ask you a question which I was hoping you could assist me with.

Do you know how much electricity in terms of Kw/month the average household in Zambia consumes?

  24. The only alternative to the so called PACT is the ADD and Chipimos party. We shall not vote for people who are not decided. Especiall shikulu SATA! who cares about the PACT bwezani is coming Back ..sream as loud as u can o shout! The only way you remove MMd is voting for the opposition as MPs , when they have the majority in Parliament then only will the President work and the country will slowly move forward. So for now let the opposition Mps increase in 2011 elections. Make Sure MMD loses in most of the other provinces i.e Western , Southern, N/W Central Copperbelt , Lusaka and Northern. I think the rebel PF Mps will win on MMD but SATAs PF may get Northern province.

    Forget the presidency

  25. Capitalist we spend USD 25 per month on a prepaid meter it might increase to USD 30 . Thats on electricity. I dont know about others thats how much i spend.

  26. For HH the best to win the hearts of Zambians is to allow SATA go in first but in the event SATA decide to stay in power for ever ,then Zambian will surely back HH

  27. @ #30 dogma998

Thanks for the answer but I was looking for Kilowatts per month if not watts per month. I am not sure which one is the right one.

  28. The problem facing the pact is minor in comparison with the problems Zambians are facing. We have been told that economy has improved but how many people are benefiting. All we see is the president who flies day in day out. I have little respect for people like Machungwa. These are the people who have messed up political environment owing to their obnoxius behaviour. They are supposed to be flushed out because they have nothing to offer apart from selfishness and avarice. We need people who are pragmatic and not selfish individuals like Machungwa who does not even deserve the prefix honourable to his name.

  29. POLITICS IS ABOUT NUMBERS. HH should humble himself and accept to wait for his turn after SATA. SATA has large numbers while HH is by far behind SATA. How can one think that SATA will simply handover presidency to HH? Tayankila mbiye, you people. Where did you see a dog grabbing a piece of meat for another dog? It will only be in Zambia for the first time in world history. And the fact of handing over the presidency seat to another person on the silva platta is just cheapening the presidency in Zambia. Let HH work for it first.

  30. This is just a self sentence for the opposition not to form the next government. It is not anyones secret that Sata is a more popular opposition figure than all the opposition players involved but the problem is that sata alone can`t unseat the current leadership hence the need for these guys to combine forces.Indeed Kunda was right to say that MMD is forming the next government coz as long as the pact won`t work then ni RB chabe.

  31. with sata ,hichilema or not the unity continues and shall remove the MMD out of office come 2011.
Hichilema or Sata are not the entire Zambia who are tired of being lead by crooks of mr RUpia Banda’s calibre.

Its the people of Zambia and not Hichilema or Mr. Sata no no no no please. We are tired of MMD 19 yrs we can’t see anything they have done but making Zambians lofers thats all.

    Come 2011 MMD kuyabebeleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  32. HH should discpline those caders who are making comments to the media without cosualt the top leaders and that’s what is lacking in the UPND is discpline. The PF have manage this issue so well by not jumping to media at any how by any one that’s what UPND should do. Machingwa has no right to comment on the pact as is MMD and LT please don’t preach propagander by tapping news from the MMD times,

  33. One guy used to say under 5 , calculator boy , namely Ichilema! guess who said !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!its obvious MC SATA

  34. As long as the problems in the pact have been identified i am confident they will be sorted out. MMD concentrate on your problems as you have even more problems than the PACT, shame on you.

  35. @40dogma998,
Ya its Sata appreciating or affirming that where it comes to isukulu HH mukali but nimufana. Very much true and thats why him and Sata may form a better govt comprised of old and mordern perceptions of ideas.
Except RB called him “puppy” and his wife “mwenye”. See the difference?

  36. who is fooling who?water and oil can’t mix. the earlier we accept this fact the better.kill both pf and upnd. kill sata and ichilema. flash all the history of them in the toilet. then form a new party and choose a new leader outside the areas where the two come from and then all this NOSENSE OF WHO IS WHO B/N SHIKULU NO MWAICHE WILL END. for now keep on dreaming for the PACT. AFTER ALL MULIMALOFWA YOU HAVE NOTHING TO DO BUT POLITICKING AND DREAMING.

  37. If among these two political leaders one thinks he will win elections alone in 2011 i can asure them that MMD then will continue meaning both leaders are hypcrites then let them never stand in any other election

  38. Those supporters that really want the pact to work, should really revisit their thinking. It is blattant that the pact of PF-UPND cant work. These two political parties are at complete variance in their ideologies and personality. Its a no brainer.
PFor UPND should think of other strategies which would include participating in the next general elections as individual parties. It is clear these two cannot work together in government.
To those that say the MMD has stayed too long as a ruling party, surely could this be a reason to vote out a party? If you have to do so, it should be on the basis of performance other than longevity.

  39. Since both HH and SATA will stand we shall shift goal posts and VOTE for ADD and Chipimo…..we are tired of selfish people. In 2006 they both lost. In 2008 , people told them to unite and go into it as one they refused again. Now people have actually brought them together but guess what they all want to be President. And in this situation HH is being very selfish…..i know for me his the better of the two but he knows very well Shikulu SATA is finished after these elections but he insists in standing for President , why not just tell us , we have decided Mr SATA will stand i be his vice , that it. Whatever happens thereafter is for the so called Zambian people to decide. But we know both are standing so VIVA RB

  40. 30 Mr. Capitalist – 3 E’s steering economic growth greetings and thanks for consulting me, at our home where TV/DSTV is always on throughout the day, the 5 of us spend about 500 KWh/month.

Following the information written on ZWD that Mr Sata MC wants the talks of announcing the 2011 PF-UPND PACT presidential candidate to be done in private, why is Mr PF/Sata MC afraid of electing a presidential candidate since HH is reported to have said on MuviTV that he can only be Mr PF/Sata MC’s Vice-President contender by giving up the 2011 PACT presidential candidate if he (HH) loses to elections? Why is PF allergic to elections?

Have a blessed day and keep well.
    _
Matt 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you.

  41. Sata has never been presidential material to me. Look at how many rebels he has, it tells a lot about his character. Very soon his quarels with HH will intensify. I suppose ADD may be the way forwad for Zambia.

  42. Gasping for air in its comatose condition, this thing called pact misled by leaders of unique breed in their own world of illusions is still being postulated a existing? Now leadership is a choice of two deluded losers and not the electoral college of members? This circus is not ideal for our democratic dispensation other than their fantasy world.

  43. AAAAHH Maestro so they be elections woow. Get 50 members to each party and elect if it ends up in a 50 -50 each let me choose…………..unfortunetly the results will be 70-30 so SHILUKU will think his members have disowed him………hahahahaha how does he accept being VICE………Hahahahahaha

  44. Bakalamba ni ADD chabe…………am telling you we need a new party with sensible people……But i like Ka Chipimo

  45. @ #48 Maestro Hhehhehhehhe for 2011 would-b President of Zambia HH

    Thanks a lot.
