United Party for National Development, UPND, President, Hakainde Hichilema, has backed his Patriotic Front(PF) counterpart, Michael Sata, in saying that the MMD government has a hand in the conviction of former Defense Minister, George Mpombo.
Mr. Hichilema said the MMD government drove Mr. Mpombo’s conviction just like it did drive Post newspaper editor, Chansa Kabwela’s case.
Mr. Hichilema said the way Mr. Mpombo’s case was handled, it clearly shows that there was pressure on the judiciary by the government.
Meanwhile, Mr. Hichilema has said the judiciary in the country has been divided, one for the MMD sympathizers, and the other for non MMD sympathisers.
The UPND leader noted that there is need for the judiciary in the country to operate the way it ought to operate.
He said the judiciary is being driven by those in authority, adding that this could be clearly seen from the way Ms. Lucy Changwe’s case where she failed to honour a cheque to a Mr. Musonda was handled by the government.
Mr. Hichilema said that Mr. Mpombo’s case is almost the same as that for Ms Changwe, but that she was not convicted.
He added that it is extremely not fair for the government to handle cases in such an imbalanced manner.

Indeed the Zambian justice system has been messd up.It is now selective justice @ play.
there is no justice in Zambia and the earlier we got rid of this govt the better!!
Zambia … you can do better
The opposition never cease to amaze. Ba daala ba HH, did Mpombo commit an offence or not? LAZ and TIZ think so, while HH sees politics everywhere. Ba daala baHH, Mpombo has been convicted legally, just like Kabwela was acquitted legally. If you have issues and facts about Lucy Changwe which we do not know, please raise these on their own merits and leave the judiciary out of this. Or are you out to save your Pact by patronising Mr Sata? I thought that you are aspiring to be HE, how does this kind of analysis help you?
It’s not ‘almost the same’, Mpombo called Terence before he could deposit the check asking him not to as he did not have enough money to cover the check. Terence accepted but he later ‘changed his mind’ and decided to deposit the check. Following day, Mpombo handed Terernce the K10m in cash. In Changwe’s case, she allowed Musonda to deposit the check even though she knew she did not have sufficient money to cover the check, she only ‘paid’ the money after the case was reported to police, way after the letter to the President. You can see clearly that the intension to embarrass or defraud was on Terence and Changwe. Whereas Terence’s actions were politically motived, Changwe’s were purely fraudulant.
The people of Zambia put this government in place in accordance with the constitution of Zambia.
In 2011 the people of Zambia will have another democratic chance to elect a government of their choice, in accordance with the constitution of Zambia. Between now and 2011, those who want the people of Zambia to elect them into power (in accordance with the constitution of Zambia) have a chance to convince them that they are a better alternative. But the way things are going and the thoughtless rants that we get from “prominent” opposition leaders, kaya. And by the way, rigging is only in the minds of the opposition, as the Chifubu results have shown.
HH… tonga chicken! no matter how much you try to spread your wings everybody now knows that you are a light weight period:o
Are you always going play a supporting role..never a the main actor?..shame on you chicken:-?
5, It seems that is not the way Mpombo’s court saw it. Should we believe you and HH or the magistrate? I am inclined to believe the magistrate whose job was simply to judge the matter that was before him. If you brought the Changwe case to this magistrate, maybe we would be in a position to judge a fair or unfair trial, of course based on the facts and defence that would be presented before the court.
These politicians are quite something. We commoners are jailed everyday (sometimes erroneously) and they do not blink an eye, and they claim to represent us the people. One Mpombo commits a clear offence against the people and all hell breaks loose. Well of course they have a common thread, they are both a kind of opposition politician and they both breed in the Post.
“Meanwhile, Mr. Hichilema has said the judiciary in the country has been divided, one for the MMD sympathizers, and the other for non MMD sympathisers.” Interesting Mr president, please tell me which ones are for us and which ones are for them so that I can go to those which are sympathetic to us if I bounced a cheque.
There are a lot of inconistencies in this case. A lot of grey areas which should have rendered this case a nonstater. If all things were equal, this case should have collapsed. But because bwezani banda had a hand in it,we are made to believe its all black and white and thus the ruling to convict Mpombo. Its rupiah again, the meddling bafoon.
On LT we have now been divided into two camps: those who lick the ruling arse and those who lick the trailing arse. Both are good so don’t worry Senior Citizen, carry on licking your favourite, it’s legal on LT.
The utterances by HH and his friend are nosensical. When one of these two guys come into power ( that is if they will) they will not have a different set of judges but the same guys they call biased judges. It is now that they should make peace with them and let them do thier work independently.
My only advice to people is that before you commit an offence, you should know the consquences and dont depend on politicians for protection. Sata and HH are only doing it because they want to win public support and not that they are interested in George Mpombo.
Sata and HH are behaving totally useless. They are so negative and always bent on incitibg zambians. How can these two leaders fail to see that /eorge Mpombo has himself to blame? In trying to show that the PACT is one, the impotent HH just rubber stamps what Sata says. You can fool some people but you can’t fool everyone. Have you ever asked yourselves which incident happened first? It was Mpombo having no or less money in his account. Tell me where) fits in here?? Secondly it was Mpombo drawing a cheque against an account that has no money KNOWINGLY! Show me where RB fits in this mess at this point???this is the point where George commits the offence. Why is sata and HH throwing the fact that Mpombo is a parliamentarian? Mpombo knows this law hence his desperation.
If leaders like these are allowed to rule they would chase all magistrates and judges away. How can HH say other judges are for non MMD sympathisers,!!! Does this guy think?? He is just accepting that he has certain judges on his payroll! He should have said those that are MMD sympathisers and those that are trying to uphold the profession. He seems to be the one with a small brain. WHY DIDNT MPOMBO JUST DEPOSIT THE CASH INTO HIS ACCOUNT HAVING ALREADY DRAWN THE CHEQUE??
Bwana HH think before commenting on some of these issues. You just risk being swallowed. What was LAZ’s comment? Why are you politicians so petty?? You disgust me with your mentality of a kaponya.
The article’s title Zambia: HH backs Sata on Mpombo’s conviction is very far from what is contained in the news article.
What UPND 2011 presidential candidate said is a reality that any sane person who follows what is happening in Zambia can say.
The most unfortunate thing is that the jail convictions are being done on fridays so that those that are arrested can not see justice in terms of bail until monday.
Whatever the case, it will be interesting to see this friday conviction method when our current GRZ political leaders will have their turn of being prosecuted.
Have a blessed day.

Matt 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you.
There is no crime when there is no complaint. If ‘X’ hits ‘Y’ on the nose. ‘Y’ reports the matter to the Police. The Police investigate and charge ‘X’ for assault. Later X is convicted in ca court of law where evidence is adduced. On another day ‘A’ assaults B. B does not report to the Police but reports to A’s father, who is not a Policeman. Why should the Police get involved? A’s father may deal with the case in his own way. You cannot force him to go to the Police!
As for the so called ‘Friday’ sentencing. this is not new in Zambia. It has happened to many people in the past, only that now, politicians are sleeping in the bed they themselves made. Many years ago, my father was involved in a road traffic incident in which someone was injured. A whole week passed before he was arrested, and guess when? On a Friday afternoon so that he could appear before a Magistrate ‘the next working day!’ So he spent Saturday and Sunday munjema. This was decades ago.
The Saint
I like the illustration!!
BA -FI- COLOUR WHO HH IS CORRECT THIS IS MMD ENGENERED CONVICTION, HOW MANY PEOPLE IN ZAMBIA BOUNCE CHEQUES. THOUSAND AND THOUSAND LET US BE REAL WE KNOW HOW LIFE IS PA ZED.
All this over a bounced cheque…sending someone to prison even…ala ‘lwanya’!
Sharp Shooter, THE SAINT, Senior Citzen, MMD bootlicker….your intentions are obviously to sway opinion in favour of banda and his cohorts, regardless. You are probably paid to do this, but quite honestly you are getting nowhere and its very unlikely you will get anywhere on this futile quest to win the hearts and minds of the bloggers opposed to your master on this forum. But perhaps yours is to gather numbers that are opposed to your master so you can form some sort of poll to establish how much opposition rupiah faces and what people in the diaspora think of him. I would say, well you’ve got it.
Pandapa
I urge you to view things as they suppose to.I dont support RB per se but given RB and Sata,I wont hesitate to choose RB for lack of choice.Iam here on my own and I earn my living as such.I like my independent thinking void of cadreism.
Bouncing a check is supposed to be a business opportunity for the banks (which need to charge penalty fees to make huge profits to pay taxes to the government and bonuses to share holders hahaha! ) which in turn may filter through to the the citizens. It’s not supposed to be a political opportunity to fix those that oppose you mwembwamwe! You are running a country and you don’t know basic economics. What a shame!! Vote the fools out before they ruin everything.
#25 You are very ignorant about the laws of Zambia . The bank, quite well, they charged Mpombo a commision for bouncing that check but at the same time George committed an offence for issiung a check when he new that he did not have sufficient funds in his account. In this case , it was up to George to negotiate with the bank to honour that check and the bank was just going to charge the guy another commission for an overdraft. The fool in this regard is Goerge. What Findlay did was to take advantage and settle a score with a foolish guy who took everything for granted.
# 26, the rocket economic (banking, political, etc.) scientist how do you then explain Ms. Lucy Changwe’s case? I was actually being sarcastic and I knew a f.o.o.l like you was going to jump on my throat. By the wan I am not a fun of Mpombo but I just smelt a rat! Educated me more.
Current Zambian Minister might do well to read this at the LT Malawian counterpart-Nyasatimes:
MPASU WALKS OUT OF PRISON
Former Malawi Education Minister and Speaker of Parliament, Sam Mpasu was on Saturday released from jail after completing more than two years sentence.
Mpasu was convicted in 2008 for abuse of office when he was Minister of Education handling a contract to buy notebooks from a British firm, Fieldyork International.
#25. Here in the UK almost everyone would have been jailed including me if laws were as st.up.id as in the case of Zambia. However, as you have rightly said, banks penalise for bounced cheques, standing orders, etc. To a large extent, thats why Zambia can’t develop. How can there be a law to prosecute and jail people for bounced cheques instead of financial institutions making more money over dishonoured arrangements and in turn- increased government revenue through more tax on banks. Do we really have economists in Zambia?
#27. You don’t need to be a fun of Mpombo to see that things are terribly going wrong in Zambia. Zambia is a country where circus shows are everyday. Its a pity that even chaps who live in highly ‘democratized’ countries such USA, etc just mislead poor Zambians with their village-bumpkin minds.
“United Party for National Development, UPND, President, Hakainde Hichilema, has backed his Patriotic Front(PF) counterpart, Michael Sata, in saying that the MMD government has a hand in the conviction of former Defense Minister, George Mpombo. “
Really? wow that is a serious allegation. Do you have evidence Mr. Hichilema???
“Meanwhile, Mr. Hichilema has said the judiciary in the country has been divided, one for the MMD sympathizers, and the other for non MMD sympathisers.”
Once again, Where is the EVIDENCE???
Finally Zambia will be known for wrong reasons. Changwe bounces a cheque and is still roaming the street while Mpombo is convicted for the same offence. I cannot wait for 2011.
i hope Shakas sentiments are not sympathetic with his Mwisho because they “come from together”. We all know how Shakafuswa bragged when his uncle was the president. I want somebody to tell me that George didnt commit an offence then i will gladly listen to your case. From a laymans point of view, which Shakas tends to agree with, Mpombo had insufficient funds but went ahead to draw a cheque. Both of them are MPs who actually make these laws but from the way things are one would want to thi nk that they were making these laws from the lofty of the family-tree club where thet they thought they would be untouchable. It is actually these same people that enjoyed Levy’s protection that are now going to crawl. This is what a government of laws means!!!!
They say empty tins makes alot of noise i.e. HH and his grandfather SATA(NA) leave the judiciery alone AISHA and concetrate on cheating ba Kaponya.
Well ,what can we say…impombo is just trapped in that bouncing cheque case…its interesting sure…did all that come from Findlay or the dark hands…let those who have eyes see……….we are waiting to see mama changwe behind bars too,if the legal system is equally distributed..Lesa wa bonse
Who is SATA to comment! recently his MP was caught almost stealing from the govt did he and HH condemn their MP…? Whereas i agree that govt may be slightly putting alot of pressure on Mpombo, this Mpomba as the name is unfortunetly bounced a cheque…let him be arrested . That is the right thing. If someone commits a crime let that crime be punisheable. We all know our judiciary is not perfect but we also dont want people to go scott free just beacuse they are PF or whatevefr. Actually that PF MP case is still on we want a 2 yr sentence with hard labour. So that MR SATA knows what pressure and prosecution is.
#4 Task force – Yes it is an offence to bounce a check. But if you cared to follow the case very carefully you will appreciate our sentiments. If, like Mike Mulongoti said on Saturday on Radio, Mpombo had not quit his GRZ position, he would not have been prosecuted. My dear bouncing checks are the order of the day here in Zambia. You dont hear about them because the culprits are not enemies of MMD. Take it or leave it, but this still remains a fact.
HH is a bling flower with no personal identity thinks by parroting sata he will gain support for himself, shame. HH we know you went mu pact thinking sata would be barred by age or degree but now your realise sata is too clever for you he bought his degree which nobody can question infact he has two. HH you are two raw to play games with sata he will use you a discard you like a piece of s,hit nokukubikilapo insele with your tandem of MPS who voted for degree need ku ncc
Please stop insulting chickens by equating HH to them! HH is more like a parrot as he keeps on saying what the notoriously fame seeking Sata says. The best he can do is dissolve his party or better still resign and merge with PF. As for “Maestro Hhehhehhehhe for 2011 would-b President of Zambia HH says” please note that HH and Sata are exactly the same. You might as well call your self Maestro Hhehhehhehhe for 2011 once would-b President of Zambia HH says Sata will be President!”
If you follow the Kabwela case, you wonder who has owned up on such erraneous judgments-with a lot of external influences. The girl is out calm & collected. Was jailed on friday. Fred was jailed on friday too. I careles about Katele, may be someone has a better side to his thievery. If all things are equal, we dont expect bouncing a cheque warranting incaceration at all. A fine would do. However, as tho we are all blind, i might want to say that even the law can be manupilated. Its made by men & enforced by the powers that be. Its very easy. Its a method of intimidation-in Iran, its very well executed, even for a seemingly unpalatable hair cut-your are liable for prosecution. There is only one thing Zedians need – an overhaul of the whole political scenerio. Whoever starts that process does…
Why haven’t the Police arrested Lucy Changwe for bouncing a K10 million cheque. This is a similar case to Mpombo.
how come all MMD critics are jailed on fridays? look at the serial killer – Musonda, picked on monday and the same day released on police bond, people let’s be fair in our comments, we know that some of you will never survive without MMD, but, lets be objective in our arguement, this is a clear case of selective justice..Machungwa insulted in parliament, he is still out hanging his beards, yet mpombo is suspended on similar grounds, changwe, chiluba, this muzungu kid (mufumbwe) the list is endless
G. Mpombo haz been sentenced to 2 months simple imprizonment. He will serve the sentence in one of the prizonz in Ndola. This iz after he waz found giulty on one count of bouncing a K10million cheque.
MMD cannot afford a by election and another embarrassment so they just send Mpombo to prison to learn a lesson for openning his mouth too much. All the circus is just that.
# 43 The only Living Jay Are you sure he is going to serve a custodial sentence? Check your facts and don’t mislead the public.
Stupid MMD and their blind leadership, all they have succeeded in doing is turning people’s sympathies towards Mpombo. People will disregard his own foolishness and the fact that he’s an MMD bootlicker and will use this as an example of “Govt gone wild”. They obviously didn’t learn from Chiluba’s mistakes!
