A 40 year old man of Buyantashi Village in Milenge District has died after consuming excess locally brewed beer known as katubi and some sachets of spirits popularly known as Utujilijili.

Buyatanshi Village headman Justine Chimese named the deceased as Jonas Mumba of Bayantashi Village.

In an interview with ZANIS at the graveyard during the burial in Buyantashi village yesterday, headman Chimese said Mumba died on Saturday morning in Shitambuli village after drinking a lot of locally brewed beer, katubi, and some sachets of utujilijili.

Headman Chimese, who is also the brother in law to the deceased narrated that Mumba went to Shitambuli to do his work as a blacksmith.

He explained that on Friday, the deceased, accompanied by his friends, went to a beer house to drink the locally brewed beer, katubi.

The headman said his brother in law, however, opted to take some sachets of utujilijili in addition to the katubi he took after which he was taken to one of his relatives’ house when he got too drunk to spend the night.

Headman Chimese narrated that the following morning on Saturday, one of the relatives to Mumba realized that, the now late, had overslept and went to wake him up but discovered that he had become too weak to move.

He said the relatives then fed Mumba with some porridge of which he only took a bit and he was left to rest, but they later found him unconscious and he died.

The body was moved to Buyatanshi village for the funeral and the burial.

  1. Tujilijili has a fixed known alcohol% whereas our local brews have varying alcohol% depending on the fermentation ingredients and process. Sadly for our poor brothers and sisters who can’t afford mosi or shakers, they end up mixing life threatening concoctions for their booze requirements. That’s poverty pa Africa for you.

  2. # 1 Milenge district is in Luapula province southern part of luapula province. My condolences to the family of the deceased, may his soul rest in peace.

  3. Sad story …can happen to anyone drinks alcohol . No 1 please look on the zed map to know where milenge is. Google maps can help u bro.

  4. # 10 u’re right. When is our govt going to do something about utujilijili? Another man also died in Chongwe of tujilijili. Last week some Minister was saying in parliament that banning utujilijili is not possible because production is market demand driven. They are exploring options changing packaging, places to be sold etc. Shame!!!!!!!!!!

  5. Govt can not be responsible for everything mwe bantu. The man was an adult and nobody from the govt forced him to drink the tujilijili with katubi. He may well have had a problem anyway. Next some people will be calling for the banning of alcohol! This is a sad story but people have to take responsibility for their own lives. He was not drinking alone. Didn’t the other people he was with see that he had too much?

  6. Barely few days after the chief cautioned the people of luapula to avoid beer and do more of farming now we ve the tragedy-(THE CHIEF IS OCTOPUS PAUL) yet some pipo stil not decern the negative culture impact of certain region. This time I won’t hammer nail on head but the wise may deduce sense.

    Thanks

  7. LT, Did the man die after excessive beer drinking or ‘after drinking excessive beer’?
And was he from Buyantashi or Bayantashi village?

  8. Utujilijili are bad news they should be banned from the market. A few months ago some youths in Matero township were left hafl dead at a concert organised by the manufacturers of tujilijili. They were giving out free sachets of this notorious beer. A good number of kids almost died at that concert and the government was just there watching it was shown on MUVI TV.

  9. Though this is a sad development, I think the man deserved it. That is a clear indication of perfect irresponsibility. The man was a whole fool (Not Wise). He was cruel to himself. I feel for the relatives. I need responsible citizens to work with when my times comes. Surely how do you die from beer drinking? Shame.

  10. Those calling for banning of utujilijili if you know nothing about alcohol apart from its consumption I suggest you keep your humble uneducated opinions to yourselves. As for government talking about exploring ways to change packaging and other silly ideas, that is just a total waste of time. I am not against utujilijili as I have not heard anything about their safety (eg methanol levels). Government first needs to ascertain whether these things are safe. If they are safe and people are still dying then it is simply irresponsibility on the people’s part. If a post mortem was conducted on all who have allegedly been killed by utujilijili, I’m pretty sure the results would simply show that the cause of death was simply alcohol intoxication and not utujilijili (i.e if they could afford

  11. Ok Thanks guys for telling me where Milenge is. Nombe chisungu nacho ba Lusaka Times “after drinking excessive beer?” Is excessive beer a new product? After excessive beer drinking would work. or after excessive drinking of beer.
