Sata drops 21 percent in polls

Share

PARLIAMENTARY Chief Whip Vernon Mwaanga has said Patriotic Front (PF) leader Michael Sata’s popularity in Mporokoso has gone down by 21 per cent while that of President Rupiah Banda is up by 14 per cent.

Mr Mwaanga, in an interview in Lusaka yesterday, said President Banda received 26 per cent of the total votes cast in 2008 while Mr Sata got 72 per cent.

He said in the parliamentary by-election held last week, MMD got 40 per cent while PF had a reduced figure of 51 per cent, showing loss of 21 per cent of its popularity.

“Assuming voting is aligned to parties, we are in a better position today than we were in 2008,” Mr Mwaanga said.

He said it was clear that Mr Sata was losing ground in the rural areas of the country and that would reflect in the 2011 presidential polls.

Meanwhile, MMD national chairperson Michael Mabenga has said the ruling party has often performed badly during the parliamentary and ward by-elections but reclaimed the seats during the presidential and general elections.

He said PF candidate Maynard Misapa’s victory would be short-lived because the party was aware that its leader Mr Sata spent almost a month holding more than three public rallies everyday, which gave him an edge over the ruling party.

Mr Mabenga, who is Deputy Minister of Lands, said the opposition party was involved in corrupting voters in Mporokoso, but that the ruling party would not waste time petitioning the poll results.

He said there were irregularities committed by PF in Mporokoso but the known critical election monitors were tactically transferring that blame to the ruling party to camouflage the election frauds committed by the opposition party.

Mr Mabenga said the MMD would defeat Mr Sata’s party in most parts of Northern Province because people did not like him.

He said Mporokoso did not represent Zambia but was only one constituency in Northern Province where the MMD remained popular.

He said the case was similar with the Chilanga by-election scooped by the United Party for National Development (UPND) candidate Cosmas Moono, where UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema held about 20 public rallies while the MMD only had two, which was the reason the UPND won.

Mr Mabenga said the MMD had realised the mistake and would ensure that it matched the presence of the opposition each time there was a by-election.

He said almost all the seats that had been scooped by the opposition during by-elections had been reversed during the general elections and the same was being anticipated in this year’s elections.

According to Mr Mabenga, the margins by which the ruling party lost were very comforting and would easily be overturned when the general elections are held.

The Mporokoso parliamentary by-election followed the defection of Mr Misapa to the PF, after he was dismissed as deputy Sports minister.

Mr Misapa, who contested on the PF ticket, polled 2,844 votes against MMD’s Dominic Musonda, who got 2,217.

Other contestants were National Restoration Party candidate Joyce Mukando who got 435 votes while UNIP’s Anthony Nkonde only managed 71 votes.

  1. We should not allow chi VJ anywhere near the IEC. Like #1 has said, the mmd are indeed preparing people’s minds for rigging. We should not allow this things this year. We are fed up with these mmd thieves.

  2. Vernon is senile.

There are a lot of factors to consider in by-elections in Zambia. Zambians generally do not have a stomach for by elections.

Vernon’s extrapolation is extremely flawed I misleading

  3. Yes, MMD may win this year’z election, by “all meanz”, but I bet they will forever live withe fact that M. C Sata gave them a very torrid time.

  4. This guy is mad. The seat belonged to MMD and lost it to PF so what arithmetic is he using? Iam sure even Veteran will disagree. If last time Banda got 4000 votes in Mporokoso against Sata’s 3000, then this Time around Sata gets 2884 against Banda’s 2222, whose popularity has gone down. Last month these mad men wre telling Banda that Sata was finished in Luapula only to see Sata beat Banda in ward elections. Iwe Banda these chaps balekulilapofye icuma.

  5. I think VJ has become a senile old man. You can judge for yourself…
    MISAPA Maynard J MMD 3,827 45%
    MUSONDA Mulenga W U(PND)DA 2,340 27%
    MAKUMBA Abraham PF/ULP 2,268 26%
    NSAMA Job APC 143 2%
    8,578 100%

    2011 by-elections;
    MISAPA Maynard J PF 2,844 51%
    Musonda Dominic MMD 2,217 40%
    Joyce Mukando NAREP 435 8%
    Anthony Nkonde UNIP 47 1%
    5,543 100%
In fact two things have happened here. The MMD’S support AS A PARTY fell to 40% (from the 45% that Mr. Misapa got on the MMD ticket in 2006) while that of the PF increasd from the 26% to 51% that they have now got in 2011 election. The other dynamic is that Mr.Misapa popularity as an individual increased by from 45% (on MMD) to 51% when he stood on the PF tickect compared to when he stood on the MMD ticket.

  6. VJ keep dreaming, the turn out during by elections is always poor, you are even failing to see where there is light as if you are blind……you will see mu october what will happen to your MMD in Luapula, northern, lusaka, copperbelt and 3/4 of central province….don´t worry your MMD will remain with our motherland eastern province…ka small party ka UPND will also retain southern province and a few seats here and there on the western and northern province while ADD will most of the seats in western province!

  7. PF Cadres, cool down. The Gallant VJ is looking at the results for 2008 Presidential By-Election and compare it with the Parliamentary By-Election. In 2006, Missapa won on the basis of our beloved departed Gallant Leader (MHSREP) LPM – SC and this time around, Missapa has won on the basis of your Oldman MCCS coupled with the encumbancy. These evaluations are what the Gallant VJ is talking about. Please, PF Cadres, give us a break as your party do not count on figures but insults and this is why you have failed the pact. UPND is likely to be the best party because it has intellectuals.

  8. # 9. or Miss says, all am saying is you cant compare eggs with golf balls unless you are senile. VJ has deliberately conflated presidential elections with parliamentary elections. He needs to compare presidential elections to presidential elections and parlaimentary elections to parlliamentary elections… We are jus calling a spade a spade.

  9. #9 Miss- You dont have to be a PF cadre to see the rubbish coming from this guy’s rotten mouth. You cheated RB that PF was finished in Luapula after visits there by 2 well known thieves in the person of FTJ and one Xavier. What happened in the ward elections there? Akulyenifye impiya sha kwa RB by cheating him. PACT or no PACT MMD bmust go.

  10. Am afraid what ever this man says turns out to his side….4 real PF is diminishing like wax been heated up and our so called small party UPND is slicing PF and MMD lets be real change is on UPND side and thats the team we have been dreaming

  11. 21 percent of what figures ba Vernon? Simwamene isebenzela Qua yayi. Have you ever done Quantitative methods Analysis? Thank you Brian #7

  12. The truth on the ground is that MMD is extremely embarrassed with the losses the party has been experiencing ever since RB took the helm of the party. Other than Mpulungu where they had to use under hand methods to win, they have so far lost in Solwezi, Mwinilunga, Mporokoso and Chilanga. All these seats belonged to MMD. If their so called strategy is working don’t you think bye elections could have been the best litmus tests to prove that the party is strong. How can you win continental football if you loose all local games worse enough at your home stadium? George and VJ have no choice but to boot lick and make fake assurances that all is well when things are extremely bad.

  13. How VJ thinks defies even the commonest of senses, first the turn out in by-elections is lower than in general elections, and most surprising of all ,is that an MMD seat was lost yet he says PF’s support is dwindling ,how is that possible??isnt it the MMD which has lost about 3 seats in by-elections??AIDS has started confusing his brains.RB dull as he is ,hes being cheated.Any way continue comforting your silly selves.

  14. On the PF’s victory, Katele Kalumba congratulated the opposition party for grabbing the seat from the MMD.

“We congratulate them that they have won. As you know we lost a local government by-election in Kawambwa and Lunga in Samfya, honourable Peter Machungwa’s constituency. We are not happy losing anyway,” Katele Kalumba said.

He He The Rebel Mp’s are not a factor, thats why they have failed to resign and recontest on MMD. Misapa resigned from MMD and grabbed the seat under PF. The rebles are loosing “in their stronghold”

  15. VJ the continetal thief. His time is up now. Fellow bloggers, the PACT is no longer relevant to achieve change as long as Zambians demand for PVT kwasila. MMD is more scared of PVT than even the defunct pact. VJ will not hace loopholes once this is done. Thanks to CARITAS Zambia.

  16. The Chiluba strategists ( VJ,FTJ and Chungu) are really misleading the nation! Whatever shortcomings Mr Sata has, he at least demonstrated one quality….hardwork! The plunderers have ganged up with 100% support from GRZ but he never stops fighting.

  17. # 19 Ba Mpangula, zoona eeh. I have been following your comments. You are one consistant blogger who is always hammering and pointing out issues affecting our mother land. I think permit me, I want to open a file to save all your contribution (no malice). I’m learning a lot. I also think u are so annoyed about the going on in our country. God Bless U. Finally we are redeming ourselves as Abena Zambia. Finally this yr 2011.

  18. I wonder the kind of education VJ has got. Maynard was MP on MMD ticket, that automatically tells me MMD had a larger share of votes compared to the “Might” PF. VJ, you finished politician with finished analysis!
If the rebels thought they were popular, why did the act like Maynard? The Foolish is afraid of his own shadow. Peter Machungwa, Mulenga Lombe, in short all the rebel PF MPs, you are cowards!! Your are finished politically.
Ask Chimumbwa how PF can bruise stupid people like him. Chimumbwa is finished, MMD pays him when he spits nonsense during ZNBC 19hrs news. he can be cheap, hahahahaha

Ba Chanda Chimba iii, your documentary is extremely childish. Even a newly Lusaka trades journalism graduate can do a better job than you! Do you see what povert can do to you? GET A…

  19. You can only ignore VJ’s opinion at your peril, and then call it rigging.
The old man is a brilliant and proven analyst of voting patterns.

  20. #23 Ba clifford, Chanda Chimba III only quotes what the Post have written about Sata. Vent your anger on your vuvuzela Post for lacking foresight. They should have known that Sata would one day become their darling instead of undressing him the way they did. Sata is damaged beyond repair, at the hands of the Post of course, not Chanda Chimba. I love the programme “Stand Up for Zambia”!.

  21. Machungwa and the group knows what is awaiting them Lunga ward where MMD has tumbled to the might PF is the largest ward in Luapula constituency where the chief rebel is an MP meaning the guy can not even go there because its a no go area for him same with Kasongo Chambula and Ernest Mwansa of Bangweulu and Chifunabuli constituencies respectively.

  22. #25HH If you like the program I hate it and so we cancel each other in terms support. To the contrary the program is making Sata very popular and the mighty PF.

  23. I have told you now and again that, this political experience of people who cannot survive on their own only to manipulate us, will not make our lives better or put food on the table. They have been there and will always manipulate us for their benefit and survival. People like MC Sata, VJ Mwanga, Katele Kalumba, etc. This time around we would rather have someone with no political experience, but can make the economy better for everyone to benefit. Sata, VJ and Banda have been there since the time of UNIP what more do they want, I think it is all about survival nothing else. Sata and Mwanga go to South Africa whenever they are sick while zambians are left ti die in that death trap called UTH.

  24. On a different note. Here is an interesting article from the Kenyan leading newspaper- Nation:
SH3.6B US PROJECT TO EDGE OUT OLD KENYAN LEADERS
By JOHN KAMAU [email protected] Sunday, March 6 2011 at 22:11
The US embassy will push ahead with its activities among youth groups, even after President Kibaki expressed his objection, new secret American cables released by wikileaks website show. America is spending Sh3.6 billion shillings on a youth project whose objective is to kick out existing leaders and replace them with a new lot.
A secret letter from US ambassador Michael Ranneberger to Secretary of State Hilary Clinton says the embassy is solidly behind youth groups, whose “ultimate objective is the emergence of alternative political leadership”.

  25. The sitting president is no longer going to lead, the opposition is on the lead and the people of Zambia have spoken. However much people talk, Opposition is going to rule. Congradulations
