President Rupiah Banda has gone through unopposed as MMD party president, while the position of Party Vice President has been scrapped off.
MMD Convention Electoral Commission Chairperson Christopher Mundia announced the development at the convention this evening.
Mr Mundia has also announced that six National Executive Committee members have gone through unopposed.
These are Commerce Trade and Industry Chairperson – Felix Mutati, Finance and Economics – Dr Situmbeko Musokotwane, Deputy National Secretary Chembe Nyangu and National Vice Chairperson Kabinga Pande.
Others are Party Chairman Michael Mabenga and National Youth Treasurer Evans Chibanda.
And Aspiring candidate for the MMD National Youth chairman Kelvin Sampa has been disqualified for not being in good standing with the party.
Meanwhile the delegates erupted with joy as the Chairperson announced the election of President Banda as party president.
The Convention has also upheld the expulsions of former Members of parliament Ngandu Magande for Chilanga, George Mpombo for Kafulafuta and Jonas Shakafuswa for Katuba and former Works and Supply Minister Mike Mulongoti who was nominated by the president at the time of his tenure in parliament and cabinet minister.
MMD vice National Secretary Chembe Nyangu announced this when he presented the joint Chairman and National secretary report to the convention.
The filling in of nominations for national executive committee positions closed at 13 hours.
Meanwhile the delegates attending the second MMD extra ordinary convention have amended the party constitution.
This means that in future filing in of nominations will be done ten days before the day of the elections.
Previously the MMD party constitution allowed those intending to contest for National Executive Committee positions to file in their nominations 24 hours before the day.
The delegates have also resolved that the National Executive Committee-NEC be given powers to expel members who have passed through a disciplinary process.
Voting for NEC positions takes place on Wednesday.

I think Dr. Kaunda did a fantastic job uniting the nation, I however do not agree with his economic plan. Socialism was the worst economic plan he had for the nation. This is why I do not place Dr. Kaunda as high as many do. I commend him for uniting the nation and providing free healthcare and education up to tertiary level. I do however think he did a horrible job on the economy.
As for the Late Dr. Mwanawasa, I also think he did a very good job. No complaints there. As of now, H.E.R.B is also doing a fantastic job. The economy is growing, there is food on the shelf, hospitals, schools, roads, railways…etc are being built. This is why I think he deserves another mandate. tbc…

As for Dr. Chiluba, I am not a big fan. I feel he, with the advice of Mr. Sata did not perform to expectations. I do thank him for a few things like bringing about democracy, liberalizing the economy and the declaration of Zambia as a christian nation but I feel he could have done better. I feel Mr. Sata was a liability in the MMD and contirbuted nothing to Zambia besides his sham of an amendment constitution bill of 1996 and his third term bids. Mr. Sata and Dr. Chiluba did not do a good job I feel and the fact that you support both of them raises a lot of questions about your credibility IMO.

It is interesting that the MMD vice-president position has actually been removed from the MMD Constitution meaning the position will never exist for the next 5 or so years until the next MMD Convention. This means that any MMD President will have to select one of his pawns as his Vice-President for the Country if MMD wins any Presidential election.
I hope this does not mean that George Kunda has been given a vote of no confidence by President RB who initially supported him.

Hardly 2 weeks ago with audacity he ran almost the whole thread propagating that the position of VP in MMD is ceremonial and to insulate the party from dangerous rivalry it should be abolished immediately. I just hope that Magande is not going to be used to split the votes of the Opposition so that once it is done, then President RB Banda can make him Zambian Vice-President to prepare him to become MMD presidential candidate in 2016 should RB win the Presidency of Zambia again.
This analysis comes through because Magande has never said he differed with President RB Banda when he was dropped as Finance and National Planning Minister.
The confusion that Magande may bring to the Opposition is that of helping MMD to reduce UPND’s votes thereby reducing HH’s chances of becoming Zambian President.
Magande is on record saying that you never know may be President RB will say younger man now Im old please come and take over the MMD leadership.

Seems he’s constant visits to State house and government ministries and departments have not been appreciated not to mention he’s generosity (lack of). Do we see him being expelled like Saka, Mpombo, Magande and Mulongoti. Prior to the convention , he was all over the country campaigning and of course appearing on MMD BC.
With great power comes great responsibility. Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. It is very difficult to remain on the same side of the fense in politics and as such it is important to do that which will not negatively affect you when you move to the other side of the fense. The time of reckoning always comes and it is at that time when people ask themselves whether it was really worth it. Let us be responsible, this country belongs to all Zambians. There is no individual who is more Zambian than the others.

There is NO democracy at all
We must all remember that the Second Term of Office in the western countries, the sitting president do not get opposed within the party ranks. This is a normal practice.
Tony Blair, Bill Clinton and George Bush all these guys were not opposed going into the second term of office. I believe Barack Obama just launched his election campaign for 2012 and have not seen any one from the Democratic Party base shout out to oppose him.
So all this talk complaining about RB not being opposed is derived from many frustrated and disgruntled souls.

Well, my take on this matter is that MMD has set it self up to a disastrous END. All the NEC members who will lose in the elections WILL NOT and CAN NOT campaign for RB. Key among these people are: George Kunda, Austin Liato, Brian Chituwo, etc. I don’t understand HOW rb hopes to win elections with so many disgruntled senior party members.
