President Rupiah Banda says there is need for the country to find ways of restricting alcohol in public places.
The President said this is because most of the crimes being committed are as a result of people spending long hours in drinking places.
He was speaking to Journalists shortly after he cast his vote at Mulungushi University in Kabwe on Wednesday.
The President said he is happy that alcohol has been banned at the MMD convention, which he said has contributed to the peaceful atmosphere.
And commenting on his adoption as Presidential candidate for the 2011 general elections, Mr. Banda described it as a great responsibility.
Meanwhile, President Banda said he is excited that he has been given the status of free man of the city of Kabwe.
He explained that Kabwe was his first place of work and that independence originated from the Mulungushi Rock of Authority.
Last Friday Councilors at Kabwe municipal council unanimously awarded Mr. Banda the status of free man of the city.
Meanwhile President Banda has praised the peaceful environment that has characterised the on going MMD national convention.
The President says the peaceful atmosphere at the convention is as a result of transparency.
Mr Banda says that the convention has been peaceful because the party has been preaching peace.
The President further says as a ruling party, the MMD must lead by example.
And Vice President George Kunda says he has not been affected by the scrapping off of the position of Vice president in the MMD.
Mr. Kunda says he will contribute effectively to the party despite the scrapping off of the position of vice president in the MMD.
He was speaking in an interview with journalists at Mulungushi University in Kabwe on Wednesday.
Delegates to the MMD Convention on Tuesday amended the party’s constitution to abolish the post of Vice President.
This means the national Chairperson will be the second in the party hierarchy.

Ya, alcohol should restricted and burned in some places. All over compounds you find people selling to jilijili. Infarct these tujilis should be burned.
Restriction shud start from state house coz RB is a great ‘castle enjoyer’.
BBC Reporter: Mr. Mpombo how can you interprete the threat you are receiving from MMD Party Carders?
?
George Mpombo: In the preamble, that’s tantamount to falousiosness, you know the odesity and chilled cold breeze that sweeps the jolly faces of Zambians should not be taken for a ride. I habour none of acrimonious hemispheres in my heart toward Rupiah with his bunch of charlatans, tuntermites and mullybangs. Generously and gaugerlaniously, MMD is shifting its camp from intial principles and norms on which a party was formed. It is so fungfunenous to insight mullybang to parasquad and beat me during the forth coming convention…..by the bullet or the ballot, Bible or Quoran these sinterenias cadres are losing it. They have no focus. They are all braggadocios and are moribund!! Zambians…
Zambians should not go in for these chaps’ cheap political saber-rattling. These cadres are headed for a deep and suffocating political kerfuffle!
?
BBC Reporter: Mr. Mpombo, so what do you make of this?
George Mpombo: The party is on the razor-sharp double edged knife of political eclipse and extinction having relinquished from the sky-scraping substratum of principled democracy. The intensive care unit of party supporters is also about to disintegrate and permanently stop …….
The interview is to be continued,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,reporter goes to fetch for a DICTIONARY!
RB IS RIGHT LET HIM RESTRICT THIS BEER CONSUMPTION IN BARS ONLY BARS SHOULD ONLY OPEN AFTER WORK HOURS CLOSE 22.00HRS INCREASE BEER PRICES ADHERE TO AGE LIMIT SAT AND SUNDAYS ONLY ENTERTAINMENT BARS OPEN 18.00HRS TO 22.00HRS SUNDAYS CLOSED ONLY COKTAIL BARS.LICENCES TO BE STRICT ANY VIOLATOR IMPRISON MORE THAN 5YRS IN JAIL
Rupiah is right. Our Kenyan friends have made it into a law that bars should open at 5pm and close at 11pm during weekdays. At weekends, bars open at 2pm and close at 11pm. If they find a bar open or anyone selling alcohol, it is punishable by heavy fine and even a jail sentence. Kenya is more developend than Zambia economically. But this is because they work hard despite a few problems here and there. Their manufacturing industry is so strong that they are exporting most their things to other countries including Zambia. It is true that as early at 07am in the morning, many young people in Zambia are drunk. But the state should create more jobs to deter these young people from sinking into the oblivion of alcohol. Let parliament enact a law against excessive and every-hour drinking of beer
Number 3 & 4, you have cracked my ribs!!
A visit to Chainama Hills Hospital brings to reality the impact that uncontrollable alcohal consumption has had on many lives. People are literaly going mad everyday. There is definately need for the government to come in and arrest the situation especially on Tujilijili before the entire Zed goes bananas.
Excuse my ignorance, could someone kindly inform me what the status ‘free man of the city’ entail?
Sorry, the word in posting number 9 should be ‘entails’
#3 Ulishilu, u cracked my ribs.
So no tujili jili at convention. So boring!
#3 & 4 You are the Man!! Ala amalofwa nayafulisha sana. Most pipo have absolutely nothing to do, no where to go, don’t even know where to start. Alcohol is the cheapest thing they can find.
Rbishs’ government has allowed brewers of Tujilijili to operate as businesses and even pay tax despite the detrimental effects of the poisonously potent acohol packed in sachets. Ofcourse, the banning of acohol at their convention will allow for sanity to prevail. This same sanity can be seen if acohol consumption was controlled and those found wanting prosecuted. # 8 Mat, is right there are too many people suffering from all sorts of physical, psychiatric and physical ailments due to excessive intake of acohol.
Change is near though do not despair! VIVA PF, VIVA MCS, VIVA REAL CHANGE!
#3 +4, you are good. Thanks! but tell us more, did the Reporter come back with a Dictionary?
Manje chamitwala ku ma pint !
#3 You are mad. Kekekekekekekekekeke
NO BEERS IN ZED FROM NOW ON……..FINALLY BA ZED HAS BEEN FORCEFULLY STOPPED TO DRINK
RB and your MMD officials are the one who buy your cadres beer and they later cause violence.
Viva PF and Sata come 2011.
The wind of change is around the corner.
SORRY,NO BEERS IN ZED FROM NOW ON……..FINALLY BA ZED HAS BEEN FORCEFULLY FORCED TO STOP DRINKIN
# 3 Bravo – ulinshimbi mani, too much stress nama politics needed some rib tickler.
# 3 we are still waiting for the reporter. Ulimwaume sana
Probably the only sensible policy he is proposing and shows just how little in real policy RB and the MMD have failed to deliver – not enough.
THIS IS GOOD POLICIES FOR THE DDM OR MMD OR MDD
this nation definately needs to limit alcohol intake by its citizenry and emphasise on working hard to move it forward. its one of the few sensible things this president of mmd has said since he came into office. but on the so called peaceful atmosphere at the mmd convention, its just as result of the removal of competition by barring those who wanted to stand against some individuals and the scrapping of the VEEP position. is that democracy really where there is no competition…..?
RB himself drinks like a fish, what is he telling Zambians? He must first create jobs to keep people busy and spend less time drinking. The councils that are supporsed to enforce drinking bylaws have been taken over by the MMD thugs, who is going to enforce any laws petaining to bars and night clubs? All we know is that you can buy and drink beer anytime anywhere, chaliopener!!Even RSA which is not a christian nation does not sell beer on Sundays.Wake up Zed someone somewhere is not working. The MMD of course, kuyabebele!!
Alcohol takes away the understanding of the mind as well as money. Let’s all think of cutting our intake as this will surely lead us to having more money in the pocket. I salute the man that can take such a strong step in this country as it will surely be met by high resistance from all walks of society. RB can think of implementing this after the election as a national measure. Any amendments to the law prior to the elections will be detrimental towards his campaign for re-election
First ask yourselves why alcohol consumption is so rampant in Zambia before you talk of restricting us.KK even threatened to resign if we did not slow down on alcohol. We told him to ahead and resign if he wanted, but there was no way we we were going to abandon our friends Castle and Mosi.
I was dissapointed at the rate people in general drink bear in Zambia. I think this should a general rule especially driving under the influence. DUI.
Now what’s this kabwe rubbish. I thought Banda has always been a free man? Whats this exceptions? i don’t understand! isn’t there anything else to please your president like working with him creating jobs for kabwe? that would sound interesting. wouldn’t it? somethinking never cease to amaze me. i wonder how far in reverse will we ever go..? GOD have mess
In most countries where alcohol is readily available, there is need to control its sale. I am based in Dubai even here in a Islamic country with Shari’ah law where one is required to have a liquor licence to buy booze from bottle stores, pubs only open strictly on certain times. During work days they open from Noon to 4pm and re-open from 6pm to 2am. On weekends they open from Noon to 4pm & then 6pm to 3am. No night club operates till early morning like ku Zed.
We should be told about who takes whisky in the MMD camp. Ba mwine may top the chart, we know. Just provide good policies which will create jobs and this frustration of drinking will disappear may be. For now tunjilingili will continue…..as sad as it sounds.
here is another way to restrict Alcohol consumption. Hike taxes , restrict bar operation and ban bar in residential areas.
No 26, RSA sells bear every day of the week. I nevertheless agree that we need some restrictions on alcohol selling.
Start with Parliament motel and Army messes. Ba mambala bala ntigula bad ku parliament motel na mahule sana
“….He explained that Kabwe was his first place of work….” I agree now that these are “Ama RuBish”.. How many places has he vistìted and has said the same? Imwe, mwebena Kabwe akali kamukuba shilya nshiku, let us not confuse reality with ama RuBish rtwapapata!!!
STOP BEING NEUROTIC —-!!!!
You are all missing the point. RB said there is need to restrict alcohol in public places, that’s all. He hasn’t said restrict it at what level. It might be restricting from the current 24-hours-drinking habit to about drinking-all-day (12 hours) ONLY. So that won’t make much difference since a lot of you black-out after just a few mosi pints anyway. The way you are protesting as if you even last on the bottle! RB is thinking about restricting alcohol to levels which will still be too high for most of you – who black out after 2 bottles. The restriction will be for serious chaps like His Excellency RB, His Presidency Chilufya Michael Sata, and ME. It takes a few bottles of Single Malts to make us stagger…don’t talk about blacking out. Now, that’s…
RB – when you restrict your movements, alcohol can also be restricted.
#4 ant mmd. Taumfwa you have made my day. I am also going to look for dictionary before the reporter comes back. Nice joke. On the topic Its true we need to do something about the drinking of alcohol in public. It should be restricted to bars and taverns. Taking too much of youth time instead of engaging into meaningful ventures youths spend their time drinking any time anywhere.
But RB you want to restrict beer so that mulenwa mweka ku plot 1. Start with yourself then restrict for the rest. Twalyumfwa ati ku plot 1 na muli Challenger chilalila ama castle na ma whisky. That’s why the other time you were coming from Joburg the pilot had to divert the plane to Mfuwe pantu ati mwali ambuka bale mikishafye mundeke. Nga mwalisebana pa Lusaka International airport.
I agree with Banda. there is too much alcohol abuse in Zambia. pls control those bars they must be closed by 22hrs unless they are licenced to go till late.
Dear bloggers, continued from comments #3 & 4, the report failed to return…. for some reason. The words were too big for him.
Create jobs first, then may be you wont have lots of people having all day to drink and lots of people brewing Kachasu as their main source of income.
#3 andd i like it still waiting for the reporter good day
You are very crazy uv realised people are stressed so u thought of making us laugh. that was a good one…..but was hoping the reporter came back to finish the interviw kabili!
#3 and 4 i like it still waiting for the reporter good day
Finally, its long overdue
Oohh, lobe inga tawakolwe lelo, we know you, you are probably drunk as you speak. But still whoever invented tujilijili mukali because those things have swept the market from submiller and chibuku. They even have sexy names as johnys, officers, ester phiri et al. They are also handy, readly available and extremely potent.. Eishhhh!!!! Such is the invention of Mohan.
Lets set our priorities correctly:
1. police officers to refrain from using live bullets on unarmed civilians
2. freedom to hold rallies
3. ZNBC to go off the air for the rest of its life
4. To use tax payers money for developmental projects
5. to clean up the filfth in all towns and cities, and..
6. to restrict alcohol
The move to ban alchol in public places is most welcome. However with or without alchol pipo will still commit crime as they do it for various reasons. The better would have been to ban alchol during politial campaigns and allow bars and bottle store to sell beer after 17.00hrs during work days and and from 10:00hrs during weekends. As for George Kunda I think the man has become a reject, he is surviving at the pleasure of RB. The position of party Vice President has been scrapped meaning in the event that an MMD seating president happens to pass on the Chairman gets in the seat. What an arrangement. There is no real democracy this is the mistake Levy made and RB does not see anything wrong with this arrangement. How come Musonda has been disqualified on ground of not being in god standing
No RB thats the only recreation facility left for us NOOOOOO!!!!!! we will still be buying from shops and drink all day at home
Two years ago the president of Bostwana increased the tax on all alcoholic beverages by 70%. He also threatened another 70% tax hike if alcohol consumption was not curtailed. Citing family disputes and low productivity; funny because Tswanas are some of the least consumers of alcohol in Africa. Maybe just maybe Zambia could follow the botswanian lead.
Abraham Lincoln when effecting the Alcohol ban in the US likened alcohol to an Egyptian Angel of death commissioned to kill the first or fairest born in the family cos of the devastating effect it had on families and productivity.Alcohol should indeed be regulated especially to young ones.
Indeed the ban should start from state house. We have all heard his belegede and fopo stories in the state house orchard gardens.
RB which side are you? When you came into power the first thing you was to reduce taxes on beers??!!
just create jobs/employment for those drinkin from mornin till late. Whether you put up measures or not people will still find ways to drink. Crime is committed because people have been neglected and have no jobs. Just create jobs. People drin because they frustrated or depressed.
The reporter is taking long coz he cant find any dictionery that contain the said words #3 and #4
#51, Khama has only managed to introduce the Batswana to illicit alcohol products distilled from their homes. Batswanas now drink anything and that is why he has introduced alcohol levy as aditional measure. its not working overall; except enhancing smuggling. When you increase taxes, individuals move from hygienic aocohol to shabeens. it also creates powerful wealthy beer trading cartels. The USA learnt a big lesson in the 1930s. A National Alcohol Policy is, however, being drafted for Zambia and alcohol producing companies have been requested to make submissions. Somehow, the alcohol market will be regulated.
tukalabunwa chilabushiku kwati niwebo utushitila chimambala iwe ba makaka
@3 n 4,ala u ve cracked my libs.cant stop laughing.keep it up
No 3 are you they one who created this; if so do some more, although i got the same email yesterday from a friend.
3&4 you need your own blog – you are too funny!!! Laughed so much I can skip the gym today
#3&4 you are the one! Imwe na imwe ba # 59 te libs but ribs!…#3 iam still waiting for the reporter so he can expose this lumpen…if its really true with his English…man…lol you made my day…
What you expect these people RB to do when you can’t provide them with jobs. The answer is not restriction of beer consuption but, creation of empolyment which mmd has lamentably failed us on. 90% of Zambians are loffers roaming the streets everyday with no hope of empolyment.Even those you are empolyed can’t make ends meet. Its just by name that someone can claim to be in employment. What they get as monthly pay is only enough for your talk time lasting ten minutes or so.You have failed the people, instead of mmd providing employment you give them brown envelops and mmd chitenges during election time and you spend national resources on useless things like mobile hospitals and ncc even when you know that these are not going to help our people. These are pipo, only cared for by God.
Free man of the city , means he has the right to pick any girl he wants from that city. I hope i answer your question number 9
u can close all the bars in zambia bt tujili jili will still be consumed
#3,#4 You re the man, which school did this rumpen go to kekekekekekekekekekekekekekekekekekekekekkekekekeekkeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
To stop the drinking , the old should pave way for the young to take up positions of responsibility. Not the old keep recycling themselves causing political constipation. Denying the youths of jobs have lead to panioparous drinking .The old politicians should retire at 65 and go to the village open up business.
#3 & 4, kekekekekeke kikikikikiki.
On a serious note, RB you risk losing the PF vote which was fast coming your way. Now what do think attracts PF cadres to their rallies? What do you think holds them together?
Pa Kapoma Kabaso
I pray we had so many Zambians like you, not these mercenaries out to kill the nation and themselves.
Instead of owning Zambia they are busy selling it for personal peanuts
Apparently Sani Abacha died owning billions who are the beneficiaries? western countries – may the fools grow up
Do not let the Mad Men and Devils (MMD) continue their evils ways,do not restict the sell of the almight Mosi.
U shud also put measures for these bloggers who just sit and wait to write comments.
I applaud the president for recognizing the need to restrict alcohol but @ 42 Mwana Ka Kalunda makes a very good point. Restricting alcohol without providng alternative means to spend time is an exercise in futility. Nobody ever talks about the employments numbers in the country and why they are so high, government needs to create the right environment to support job creation so that most of our youth can stop loitering around and buying cheap and highly toxic substances. Also, there is a need to provide support for alternative recreational activities taht will keep our youth from engaging in these regressive activities.
I just wonder where the so called unemployed get the money to buy so much alcohol?
breaking news:FINAL VOTERS REGISTRATION STILL FAVOURS PF
Leaks from the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) indicate that despite extending the voters registration 3 to 4 times in a bid to catch up with PF strongholds, the final voters registration figures still indicate an upper hand in the Northern and Urban provinces for the Patriotic Front. The informer has indicated the latest figures to be as follows:
Copperbelt 869,406
Lusaka 776,866
Norther 658,902
Southern 655,380
Eastern 654,204
Central 482,571
Luapula 409,754
N/Western 310,398
Western 389,609
The total number of registered voters is 5.2 million; an increase of almost 100% from the 2006 cast figures of 2.7 million.
The ECZ informer stated that a strategic analysis of the above figures gives PF the upper hand…
that is the way, your excellency.
RB for 2011
Am suprised ma lova ndiye bakumwa maningi moba and then you say that they are no jobs zamoba zichoka kuti kansi zatujilijili? drinking the whole day awe mwe cant get it.elo manje tukapaze bakazi bapika delele nishi yapya ndeo
imwe mwe mulilila nchito ur just lazy. if ur serious u can create ur own jobs. the problems is u enjoy being given things on a silver platter. i know people who dont even bother job hunting just becos they printed their vc and gave their friend to take to his boss. while waiting they are sipping tujilijili. what happened to being creative with ur hands. there are people who dont want to go to school just drinking. these are 17-18 year olds. what jobs do they want when they dont wanna be trained? i hate how people rush to whine and blame the govt for their own laziness. life is tough and its about standing on your own 2 feet. the sooner u learn that, the better for us all.
@ Ruth thanks for the information. It’s nice to Know Zambians are drafting legislation to save our children.
# 76 Wala, you make a good point, however, it is the responsibility of government to creat that enabling environment in which enterpreneurism can thrive. I think that there are a lot of Zambians who are trying to make ends meet and are willing to work hard but if you are unable to have affordable access to credit and find affordable inputs/resources to produce goods and services, then we have to go back to the drawinng board. Government has a role to play and should not be given a free pass in the name of Zambians being lazy.
@ Wala and @ Olympia extension Chick! above, you are both correct. The government needs to allow easy access to capital resource with counter measures, and the lazy youth should be more aggressive. Indeed there are those that genuinely are working hard, then there is the ignorant lot that just drink too much; where they get the money for booze one will never know. Forward with the dev. of Zambia.
Iyooooooo kwena ba Zambia mwalisamwa ku bwalwa… ..
na pa chintu wingi ukalailanga umasango uyu.. ala mwandi….
Hehhhhhhhhh ba little mama@#75, mwanisekesa maningi but mwakamba zoona ndipo mwafotokoza bwino apa.. Anso its likely pamene anafika kunyumba maybe olo unga wophikila nsima kunalibe manje kungomenya akazi wao vibakaa..
Laws restricting alcohol consumption, and indeed production, in Zambia are already in place. They are however not enforced due to obvious reasons. But let’s ask ourselves one question: is the current trend of alcohol consumption in Zambia a cause of the bad status of things or a symptom of the bad status of things? We’re certainly not the highest consumers of alcohol despite been in the ‘below par’ performance in governance and the economy category. Now, google the world’s countries with the highest and least restricted consumer of alcohol.level. You will see they’re also among the most productive and peaceful … I’m not condoning irresponsible alcohol consumption.
# 3 & 4 very funny indeed. We need more of these jokes nationwide as our country goes into elections to alleviate all the tensions. It reminds me of the Secondary school debates, “As i am standing perpendicular to the ground ” You wonder where such english comes from. Where are all the comedians that God has blessed our country with, laughter doeth good like medicine Proverbs 17:22
RB says there was peace at the convention. Its artificial peace because they managed to scare away and expel MMD members with divergent views. He should have said after if they had allowed Mpombo, Kavindele, Shakas and Mulongoti to attend. He should have said that if they had allowed red lips GK to be challenged.
# 71 amabloggers: Ha ha ha! ok twaleka bosses!
I hope even sex has been banned at the convention. This is because without alcohol, the only entertainment for delegates will be sex.
It may be more sensible to promote a “NO ALCOHOL DAY”, once every year. All alcoholics will be allowed to drink benzine, parafin, petrol – or dobo!
Nishani ukwikata kuma painti.Teti mwalanda ifyapala utujilijili.Ipainti lyakayele.Ifilepenya abantu tu jilijili.Shakers neyena niziii.
Shani ba guy.
Beer drinking in Zambia is actually excessive and counterproductive. I wish its restricted to between 18:00 and 22:00 hrs work days and 14:00 to 22:00 hrs weekends (for public places). All those that want to drink outside these hours must take home. I wonder why alcohol is not treated like other drugs and controlled. Medical personnel advise us on how much panadol one must take, in the same manner there should be a limit to beer in order to reduce abuse.
What is first needed is personal restriction in addition to govt restriction. I gave up on mosi two years ago and saved myself from wasteful spending of my hard earned money, terrible headaches and HO, foul breath and of course subjecting myself to half madness or the stupor of drunkeness add to that the time wasted which I have since being investing productively. There are some little things all you lot can do. If you cannot afford to don’t drink. If you must drink just take what is enough for you and do not do so in the presence of your children or under 18teens. Above all don’t drink and drive or do not drink when you are drunk. The rest is for govt.
#87 Zambian, you’re so funny. We’ll try it next year and see how it works.
#3 & 4 yaba av died laughing, bwa njipaya you too hilarious man.. WE WANT MORE
Your excellence it is a good thing to do
no more tu “HIGH VOLTAGE”UTU JILIJILI WAAOOO!TWALI UFWAPO STORY YASO !!!!!!if you stop beer who is going to vote for you.coz when you go for campigns you buy beer for you thugs.SO NO JILIJILI NO THAGS!
great idea.
complete prohibition would be a solution
maybe this country can see some development if we were all sober
lets learn from how the Americans have prospered
#3&4 good one.
RB you need to now row into action.Walk the talk. Zambia police, council and all, get matching right away.
Sale of TUJILIJILI has exposed minors to alcohol intake. There is need to stop the packing and sale of TUJILIJILI to have a responsible young generation. LEADERS SHOULD ACT AND STOP THIS DISTRUCTIVE BUSINESS.
yes alcohol should just be banned overall and all the other problems might be solved
If you want my beer, come and pry it from my cold dead hands! I’m ready to die for my God-given right to imbibe!
Tishoke Nyama should stop at State House!!
To stop selling beer nishi ni no michopo kaili osamwalila
i agree with his excellence and congrats to MMD for successfully holding its extraordinary convention. Mpombo can not complain now that they are expired. it is the same MMD nothing has changed its only the status for Mpombo and his friend that has changed
If beer is stopped, how will PF function?
the authorities should seriuosly look at the whole issue of tujijili. – health implications, packaging, social etc. it takes years to make a good whiskey, brandy unlike these these tujilijili which takes a day or two to make and deliver, a lethal concotions of chemicles. when am down financially, I prefer opaque beer to these remedy of death. also traditional drinks I do enjoy like gankata, imbote, sholoma to mention a few.
wow this RB guy is brave …attempting to ban/restrict alcohol consumption by the electorate…takes alot of guts
