The Prisons Care and Counseling Association (PRISCCA) has expressed disappointment with the ever increasing number of Zambian women being arrested and convicted on charges of drug trafficking.
PRISCCA Executive Director Godfrey Malembeka said his association was concerned about the number of women going to prison because of trafficking in drugs.
Mr. Malembeka said women need to be empowered through groups such as cooperatives so that they desist from engaging into illegal ways of earning money.
He noted that by behaving engaging into drug trafficking, the Zambian women were devaluing themselves thereby eroding the respect which people had for them.
Mr. Malembeka told ZANIS in Lusaka today that women involved and those who intend to venture into such activities should be seriously educated and counseled on the dangers of drug trafficking since prison is not a nice place to stay.
He suggested that non-governmental organisations (NGOs) such as NGOCC and other women organisations should step up sensitisation programmes for women and juveniles against drug trafficking.
Mr. Malembeka also called upon the national education campaign division of the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) to educate the women instead of just apprehending them and putting them in custody.
He further advised women indulging in illicit activities to find legal means of uplifting their living standards.
Mr. Malembeka feared that the number of women in prisons may surpass that of men if they continue with their criminal activities.
ZANIS
This is so sad.I dont think Zed is in a crisis state for our sisters to resort to quick buck syndicate.I think greed & vanity is driving our once upon a time natural women into Kim Kardashian wannabes.
ukutemwa mane nolunkumbwa is wat is driving these women to drugs.crime does not and will never pay. they love to drive posh cars like they are well to do business women. just get yourself good education and a good job like the other successful zambian women. money that u work for is more enjoyable than that aquired thru dubious means.
Every Zambian knows it’s Bemba women. Why even beat about the bush.
The problem is not which group of woman are doing it but the limited opportunities in the country for women.
# 3 youn asshole son of a bitch
Watch your language son
and you can get in touch with me you bastard#3 If you have beef email me on [email protected]
I agree with #1 too many women are trying to keep up the facade of doing it big. Most of the money from drug deals is not for survival but so as to inflate their own sense of worth in front of others with material riches
Such a shame.
Any social scientist out there who can research why a particular group of women enable in this activity.
Engage not enable
We need more research into what is triggering our women to be more involved in drugs this time arround. Its worrying indeed. It seems the Zambian woman is losing touch with morality and this might grossly affect the family and household too. Of course men do it too, but its becoming too much for our women.
UNZA School of Humanities can you get on the ground and give us answers before our society collapses due to drugs. Its your responsibility as university to quickly research into issues like this. Otherwise there is no benefit for universities to sit and watch society morally degenerate.
