Share

President Rupiah Banda and First lady Thandiwe Banda yesterday hosted an Easter luncheon at state house for the Visiting Veteran United States constructive surgeon Joseph Clawson.

Dr Clawson , who is in the country at the invitation of President Banda, has been conducting surgical operations at Beit Cure Hospital in Lusaka and he will be living the country on Saturday back to the United States.

President Banda expressed appreciation to DR Clawson that he was able to accept his invitation to conduct surgery in Zambia.

Dr Clawson was accompanied by Beit Cure Hospital ( BCH ) board chairperson Larry Kalala , Nero Surgeon Dr Kachinga Sichizya and Dr Cannius Banda.

President Banda said during his visit to BCH this week that he was touched by what he saw on CNN Television channel where Dr Clawson was shown performing a complicated surgery operation on a child patient at the same hospital.

It was during the same visit that the Head of State decreed that government was going to take over payment of the health institution’s Doctors and nurses’ salaries.

The BCH management has all along dependant on well wishers and donors to pay salaries for its workers.

  1. Whilst there’s nothing wrong with inviting Dr Clawson to come and perform paid surgeries in Zambia, I would have been more impressed had the president invited a Zambian doctor from the diaspora equally qualified to perform such operations. I was admitted to St. Thomas’s Hospital in London last month with suspected appendicitis and guess who was in charge of surgoens and who cared for me- ( our very own Zambian doctor). What the Govt’s policy should be is to create a sustainable offer to woo Zambian doctors back home. I am sure Zambians would be quite happy to subsidise this for the sake of their and children’s health. This would create more votes for RB rather than that stu-pid idea to false ZCCM to give houses out for nothing. RB do you get it?

    • A Zambian in the diaspora been wooed back home … not possible. You’re a diasporee not because of persecution, but because you’re more useful out there and not in there.

  2. What about profesor jellies or goran jovic and the other outstanding doctors in zambia?should they be seen on cnn as well for them to be honoured?or what about the poor nurse or clinical officer in rhc who are waken any time of the night?rb should learn to appreciate what he has.

  3. There are hundreds of doctors doing a lot of work in Zambia on voluntary basis. I know of one who has taken his students from Tennessee (name with held) who spends his hard earned dollar to help in Zambia. Not even a hand shake from RB, or even a mayor. A paid up doctor who may not even know our cultural barriers in how to deal with patients is honored with state luncheon, in fact it was a banquet. Color phobia.

  4. this doctor is 79 years old.. why is he allowed to do surgery in Zambia when you do not see surgeons in the UK or the US doing surgery at that age.?
