Lusaka General Hospital construction works nears completion

Lusaka General Hospital

Ministry of health spokesperson Kamoto Mbewe says construction works at Lusaka General Hospital have neared completion.

ZANIS reports Dr.Mbewe saying during a press briefing at his office today that construction works at the latest government hospital is nearing completion saying currently the road to the hospital was being constructed.

The water reticulation works and ZESCO substation construction have also reached an advanced stage.

“We would also like to report that the equipment has arrived and is currently being installed. The Hospital has a bed capacity of 150
which will be increased to accommodate more patients” he said.

The commissioning of the hospital is likely to take place next month. When fully operational, the demand for health services and congestion currently expirienced at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH ) will be minimized as new hospital will be an alternative.

And in another development the ministry has procured 13,000 pairs of shoes for nurses country wide.

Ministry of Health Spokesperson Kamoto Mbewe said the provincial health offices are collecting the shoes for distribution. Earlier in the year 13,000 uniforms were procured and have since been distributed.

Health minister Kapembwa Simbao, launched the distribution of shoes for nurses last week on 5th May , 2011 during the International
Nurses Day commemoration in Chipata, Eastern Province.

Meanwhile the ministry has received K10 billion towards the dismantling of the debt owed to all health workers.

Dr. Mbewe said earlier this year K 12 billion was released which covered leave travel arrears for the workers country wide.

He stated that K 50 billion has been set aside for this year for the dismantling of the debt saying a total of 22 billion kwacha
has been released so far.

  1. HATS OFF TO OUR LATE PRESIDENT MWANAWASA FOR THIS GOOD PROJECT THAT HE LEFT BEHIND.WE NEED MORE PROJECTS LIKE THIS AND NOT A JUDO CENTRE AS NOBODY IS REALLY INTRESTED IN LEARNING JUDO OR KING FU. MAYBE THIS JUDO CENTRE WAS MEANT FOR THE CHINESE BOGUS INVESTORS .WE DONT WANT BRUCE LEE MANIACS IN ZAMBIA AS WE ARE VERY SOBRE NATION

  2. So no more cape town for Judo Banda & friends, Sata & wife no more Joburg gud work our late prez u have the future in mind:d

  3. When it comes to quoting anonymous sources the Post frequently uses this avenue to defame innocent citizens. They are only interested in anonymous sources who match the Editor’s own outlook and this could be the reason the paper is losing credibility every single day. These are pitfalls of unoriginal journalists at the Post who take every opportunity to denigrate the government rather than analytically addressing the genuine issues facing the country. It is a matter of grave concern when a media outlet deliberately seeks out swindlers to offer “expert” comment on the government. Let the Post give us more evidence on the US$98 Million reported in today’s edition.

  4. NAFUTI NAFUTI!
RB and his MMD administration are steadfastly continuing the promise for a better and brighter tomorrow Zambia when opponents are busy soliciting for gays in the UK. It takes focused leadership to keep financial commitment on any multi billion kwacha projects without which scarce resources could easily be diverted and a project turned into another eye saw. Bravo RB keep the wheels turning so that we can take over a better and progressing country after your full and final 5 tenure in 2016 God willing. This will now help care for Sata’s dilapidated heart facing height loss problems.

Bravo MMD as you build on the promise! When MMD wins and rules, Zambians and their democracy win.

  5. No 1, i think you need to understand how government works. Mwanawasa did not as an individual take a stand to build a General Hospital. Government carry out projects based on the manifasto and wishes of the ruling party in this case MMD and not Mwanawasa as an individual. If that was the case RB would have stopped the projects if it was not government implementing ruling party projects. We need to move away from petty politics… we all know you do not like RB. Until your preferred candidate becomes president you need to accept that the current party is in power and implementing its projects. Lets be mature. Go around SADC and see how many governments are building hospitals… give credit where its due and appreciate what you have…

  6. This is not a hospital but a clinic given its admissional capacity. Anyone who has done statistics would tell anbody with a brain that works that Lusaka deserves a much larger capacity hospital located on an easily accessible site. This new “hospital” is small, poorly located and has no expansion space for future demands for more capacity. Clearly shows that its planners were dim-witted and mentally inadequate.

  7. Mr No 10 who seems to know it all… the average hospital here in Australia is between 150 to 200 beds so i do not know where you get your definition of hospital or clinic. A definition of hospital is not based of admission capacity but services provided. So do not cal others dim-witted and mentally inadequate. You may just be one.

  8. Mr No 10 who seems to know it all… the average hospital here in Australia is between 150 to 250 beds so i do not know where you get your definition of hospital or clinic. A definition of hospital is not based on admission capacity but services provided. So do not call others dim-witted and mentally inadequate. You may just be one.

  9. I remember about a year ago reading a ZANIS article on LT saying the hospital was “completed”. And today “nearing completion”? Please get us a new govt guys

  10. Ok #12 Let LT show us the photo so that we can tell if it is a clinic or a hospital! A clinic is small and a hospital is BIG!

    • Hospitals and clinics should not be judged by size or bed space but by the services and facilities provided.

  11. No11 and 12, u scumbag , put in something positive, 4 all we care  u seem to be the mr know it ll, u *****

  12. The slave trade in Africa has been going on for thousands of years. It started in the saharan slave trade when the africans were enslaved by muslims and brought through the desert to muslim countries. Europeans perpetuated the practice of slavery by supporting it and continuing to make that business viable,What is my point?

Well my point is, why do you Zambians in there scare/envy, wish and respect Indians. I know the rule of thumb even in zambia is that White Caucasian first, Indian, then African. What are we doing about it? Look at the shops in Lusaka, look at the main good jobs, look at the business, If all Indians and Whites left Zambia, do we all agree that the country will collapse irrecoverably? I am not proud being Zambian let alone Black, but i love zambia. Thanks

    • Ba Mushota, chachine muli ba kwa Mushota!! what a self hating fool you are… You have a problem with your identity… It is what you think and shallow minded people who think whites/asians are superior, grow up and appreciate your identity, black or Zedian is not as a curse, you ***** stupid fool!!!

    • What exactly do you smoke Mushota? Your post has no relevance to the discussion at hand? You always crack my ribs when you post…pls get serious

    • I agree with bla bla bla. You are jayed bad type. U confuse love & hate! You dis the home crib. shut your @#$%

  13. Bushe tabicita commission kale? I was expecting people to be receiving meducation this time from there! Was the commissioning done pre-maturely???

  14. am not proud being Zambian let alone Black, but i love zambia. Thanks?????????? This girl is cursed!!!!

    • Don’t be deceived my dear. Every nation experiences a 1000 plus events that wouls make their citizens not proud. But determined citizens go on to do great exploits. Why not do something on your to be proud of?

  15. If Mwanawasa initiated this hospital it is good but if Banda initiated it ,it is bad! If you are thinking like I am thinking then you are confused.

  16. The capacity of the hospital is small given the increasing population of Lusaka. In addition, the state of UTH being in a deplorable condition, building a much bigger hospital would have compesated for UTH’s inadequate capacity. The issue that remains to be resolved is that of staff to be re-deployed at the new hospital. At the moment there is a critical shortage of health personnel in the country. Most health qualified staff have migrated to other countries in search of greener pasture.

  17. #6 Thank you for putting it Right
and #1 you are showing the exact problems that Zambians have its not just Levy, FTJ , KK Sata, its the party…
Learn to attach responsibility to the institution that helps these people become head of state and not hero worship an individual… Without MMD Levy could never have been president same with KK same with Sata take away PF you think Sata can even stand as president…
Each leader will show what they have achieved while in power yes but there is always the Partys agenda ie the idea of 90day as useless as it may sound its a PF and Sata agenda who ever comes after will have to follow this but also implement his development agenda

    • I agree. Zambians have a problem. Development is seemingly always attributed to a Political Party or an Individual. This should not be so. These are Government and national programmes. Party manifestos and Party Presidents just guide and prioritise these programmes. Tell me? Who is responsible for the Gabon Disaster? MMD or Government. If u can’t distinguish between the two DO NOT RESPOND!

  18. Iwe ka Mushota you can go do a Micheal Jackson if you like i for one dont like you sentiments regarding race.
In your mind you have made yourself small so its easy to step aside for you when someone of a different colour express an opposing opinion to yours.
Its a simple fact that we all know that depending on where you are in the world someone who is PALE will get favour compared to someone of colour that dont me i shouldnt be proud of my colour.
You are a silly girl to be expressing such ignorance on a public forum

  19. # 10 – What differentiates a hospital from a clinic? You sound to be too qualified to give such a comment!

    • Iwe nvela!!! A hospital offers all the services that a clinic can but not the other way round. If you cant get this one right, try to think about this: Why is it that all buses are vehicles but not all vehicles are buses?

  20. # 16. You’re better off not contributing. Reading thru your comment, I kept laughing but then I felt sad that we’ve such contributors on this site.
This is clearly a small clinic/hospital not worth mentioning considering the population in Lsk. 150 bed capacity cannot even carter for Matero constituency.

  21. Our students say that even if GRZ had built a 500 bed hospital, there’s need to plan & build more hospitals in other areas of Lusaka.

  22. Fantastic news. This will surely reduce congestion at UTH and will advance te availability of quality healthcare. President Banda has done wonders in the 3 years he has been in power. I think it is fitting that he is given another 5 year mandate to advance this nation to greater heights.

The development taking place in the nation is unprecedented that the opposition is greening with envy at the amount of development that is happening in the nation. Whether election year or not, development has to continue. Hats off to the RB administration.

    MMD…NAFUTI NAFUTI

  23. Does the capacity matter? No. What matters is the quality of service.
@ # 5 and 16, comment on the issue at hand. If u have any bone to chew with the Post , do not dissuade everybody to read it.

  24. Thanks to late LPM and RB for carrying on the dream. I wish when we say “it will reduce congetsion at UTH” we could state the figures in order to correctly measure how much more work is required, for now, no need to be overexicited on what i can off the cuff estimate to be a paltry ‘drop in the ocean’ for what remains to be done.

  25. Has anyone seen a Black and Indian marry and seen their child how they would look like? or even Chinese and Black? just curious thanks

    • Yes my friends Indian wife just gave birth to a lovely and beautiful mixt race child. You don`t have to move around to find such unique children.Internet might do the trick.

    • i have seen so many mixed race marriages between blacks and chineses. their kids skin color vary just like between whites and blacks. some have very pale skin and some have brown skin. they are mostly very cute. my friend is married to a chinese woman. however, i have never seen one btween indians and blacks.

    • In Kamanga compound of Lusaka was a product of China man and Zed lady. The child, girl, was cute! And cant mistake that it was not the china man responsible!India and Black? While, thats simple, within the Indian community are Black Indians(And they were somehow discriminated, called all sorts of names,eg Children of God-just as you Mushota call us names.)In Eastern Province of Zed you find alot of them.Otherwise I for one am proud of who I am.Black.And,I appreciate and respect other races for they are no more or less human.

    • Thats amazing, I didnt realise that that exists, Does your friend with a Chinese lady live in zambia?Thats very Interesting Thanks

  26. chwe chwe chwe chwe chwe.RB nafuti nafuti. No amount of vernom from the PF serpents will dissolve these achievements.

  27. Asides from that, HERB’s govt is upgrading more than 5 local clinics to 1st line hospitals , namely; Chilenje, Chawama, Matero, Chipata and lw. While Mushota still continues to dream of becoming what she will not be….unless of course she bleaches like her class does

  28. THUMBS UP BUT WE NEED AT LEAST FOUR HOSPITALS IN LUSAKA . THE 150 BED CAPACITY HOSPITAL WILL NOT DECONGEST UTH .

  29. #2 and 3 milar bj and Lozi Blood – the purpose of a hospital/clinic is to treat sick people — and not to be used like a hotel. High occupancy at a hospital is not a good thing. This institution will help reduce occupancy at health facilities within Lusaka — which is what I think most of us need. #1 Levy Mwanawasa (MHSRIP) died a few years ago – in case you did not know!

  30. THE MMD HAS NO REALISTIC PLAN TO FIGHT CORRUPTION,AND THATS WHAT POOR ZAMBIA IS SUFFERING FROM UNDER THIS RUBISH MMD.VIVA PF.COME AND SWEEP THE CORRUPTION.BALATUBELESHA  BA RUBBISH MMD!!!!!!!!

  31. KaMushota ni ka silu koyendelela. Kachita ma experiments yakubala macoloured ku UK. Us Zambians are not racists and some of us dont care what comes out when black descends on white or Mwenye descends on black; the sweetness is the same and the offspring is a human being. So kaMushota stop dreaming and be sincere with yourself. By the way this is the same kamafellow who said that in the end there will be no races because of inter-racial marriages and today she/he is asking us who or whatever…just keep quiet and enjoy bazungu if you want no one is against you! I end here!

  32. The opening of the new hospital is a good development. I guess those detracting from such a positive development believe Sata will open ten 5,000  bed hospitals in Lusaka within 90 days without saying how they will be paid for given that Zambians under Sata wont pay any tax at all and will receive free mealie meal at the end of the month from the govt.

  33. This is a good news, atleast it will help to de congest UTH. However, I agree with#10 and #22, this general hospital is too small for Lusaka with almost 3m people (1/4 of Zambia) and its poorly located. we atleast 4 of those kind in lusaka, second one in Kanyama, third in Emmasdale and fourth one in Kamwala south.

  34. @35 never mind. Names can be shared. After all Im on one part of the world and you are on the other. To make you happy, i will change it to ubuntungwa.

  35. ok for all who say this hospital is not big enough for lusaka can you please state what capacity we need because i am of the view that if we have uth in whatever state then maybe open another of the same size in a few years isnt that progress???
i mean you chaps still believe that Sata will provide all these things in 90 days

  36. .
    Job well done

Attending to 150 patients, suffering from seriously deadly illness or diseases, which can be prevented is FAR much better than having nothing. Its not about the number of beds, but the Hospital’s Grade and what it can deliver in terms of: ……

  37. In the US, they say Obama’s administration, in the UK they say Her Majesty’s government but in Zambia: if it is bad news against the government, they say RB this and RB that, if it is good news for the government, some say Mwanawasa, others say MMD and RB says ‘my government and I.’ Which one is correct?

  38. Out Patients

    Admitted Patients

    Accidents & Emergencies

    Child Birth

    Receiving Vaccinations

Helping Junior Doctors have exposure to experience

Attending to regular Medical Checkups such X-Rays, Dental & Eye Assessments

And the list goes on and on…

  39. In the western hemisphere, there are tens of thousands of medical centres called Hospitals, which have less than 75 Beds. We should not even look outside; Zambia has hospitals that have just about less than 100 Beds

So the notions or comments coming from some are just ill-treats.

  40. Sata was a Minister of Health and he destroyed the health system and took it years backwards to long waiting lists by sacking doctors.

One can say that Sata does not realise that it takes 7 years to train a doctor. And after that, a Trainee has to pass through being a Residence / Consultant / Physician which requires continue studies and years of experience before one can become articulate in a specific field.

  41. Why is that? Because Sata does not appreciate Education. He thinks he can fix Zambia in 90 Days

How do you sack doctors, then return standing on the Pulpit and boast a “propos” fixing the economy in 90 Days. Does Sata know part of fixing or growing the economy; the nation needs good qualified Professionals in Medicine, Teaching, Engineering, Economist, Scientist and so forth

  42. 150 beds are only for patients that will need to be admitted. Otherwise that hospital will have capacity to attend to a much bigger number of patients not necessarily needing admission.

  43. .

My last word… A person that has K50,000 in a bank account as small as it may sound is far much better than the one that is over drawn by K50,000 in a similar bank account

Therefore, Lusaka is better off having a Hospital with 150 patients admitted every month, being attended by Doctors & Nurses, thus on the road to recovery than leaving 150 sick-lings languishing with medical conditions at home with the possibility of death at the end of the tunnel

I hope it makes sense to anyone that think otherwise and those addicted to bringing down any Positive Block of Developemnt Change for sake of preaching hate and abhorrence.

  44. This hospital looks like a local court building. We need to be serious. Zambian leaders are a bunch of jokers. What about doctors and nurses, are they available for this hospital. It could be a campign tool.

  45. I repeat – we were told about 1 year ago that it was completed except for the road. Now the same story 1 year later. Nearly completed. It’s useless

  46. Please stop joking my fellow Zambians. This Hospital was reported to be openned a few months ago through this same media (LT) and we are busy debating the issue as if it happened today. next month LT will write about the same hospital being openned and we will be busy congratulating RB. Even if its about campaigning, please have journalistic prowes. We are probably just dumb. In my opinion we should be discussing how we address healthcare for the 13 million people, bearing in mind UTH was meant for 3 million. This small hospital should only be under attention of the health minister.

  47. 150 bed capacity is too small for the size of the population that depends on UTH, which includes referrals from the rest of the country. All it takes is to have 150 people getting sick with a disease, and all the beds are taken.

One can only hope that the concept can be replicated in every province, with the same high qualities of health care we are hoping to see at the new hospital. One supposes that a half loaf of bread is better then none at all.

  48. .

    57# JUZZ

You don’t judge a man by the content of his colour or creed but by the contents of his character.

In countries like the UK, USA, France & German they are many Hospitals, Medical Centres and Hospices buildings that were once built as Boarding Schools, Military Barracks whose internal structures or rooms were converted to become modern hospitals with State of Art Technology

Just like there many expensive & luxurious apartments that were built as Hospitals, Office Building and Industry Blocks hundred years ago, which have been converted and demarcated to become modern day lavish & habitat flats.

  49. .

As for the Doctors & Nurses! Common sense will say – you start by building structures for Hospitals, Schools or even Business premises such as a Banks, Hotels or Restaurants before you bring in Doctors, Teachers or workers.

We should not expect GRZ to employ or bring in doctors and nurses or those graduating form the School of Medicine to an open field.

Again, we are yawning into very irrelevant arguments and just bending towards negativity for nothing. This hospital will help many Zambians across the board.

  50. The same people saying this hospital is not big enough will be the same ones saying that the maize surplus we will have this year is not big enough even if it breaks all previous records. Truth is, there are some people out there who will not applaud ANY positive development in Zambia. Those same people would celebrate and dance if images such as the ones we saw of the Ethiopian famine in 1984 were coming out of Zambia today. They call themselves ‘patriotic’ but are deliberately and cynically blind to the fact that the country is moving in the right direction. This same mentality was exhibited when we were shown the photos of the newly built police houses in Livingstone when the tangible and positive development was yet again rubbished.

  51. Right now am back in ZED I acquired my email addres when I was in the UK. I am a nurse those who do not know, there are 9 mini hospitals in Lusaka plus this new Lusaka hospital its true the hosp. will be deconjested. Mind you those 150 beds make a difference

  52. ZNBS confirms $98m NAPSA deal, to rehabilitate a small building in cairo road. If we had a honest country, that money can build 10 hospitals. We have seen many $2 million dollar building they muvh bigger than ka Building Society ka mu Lusaka. but this terrible theft for sure in Zambia.

  53. #32 the Dearest b****ch MUSHOTA..i wonder which country u r in whr u hv never seen an indian vs african man or women married,,,or a chinese n african..its so common,,n im in india. u hv never travelld n yo mind is full of sewer,n i wonder if u think thru yo brain or thru yo dirty ass.let me remind u that u can remove the individual from the ghetto bt u cn never remove the ghetto from the individual..so frm wht hv heard frm u so far on LT,u r on of thoz n u cnt figure out who u r,,u cnt identify yo self..u r shame to the zambian society n very cursed..continue bitching with yo white fierce u mentioned earlier on LT..infct he has no future with u. get serious when we r discussing national issues. anyws,,hospital is welcome.lets kp on building our nation n support govt..

  54. #32 sorry i meant #33…MUSHOTA…again im on MUSHOTA…some african men r not interested in marrying other races like indians, chinese due to diffrnt factors n complications in marriage,,in case u dont kno n others who r interested they succeed but in the long run its somethn else..if i want its easy to get any,,,so wht u r talkn abt is senselss.grow up…on the matter at hand, development is a continuos process n the 150 capacity hospital ll help atleast dicongest UTH.others r sayn its a clinic.hw on earth do u find a clinic wth 150 capacity? in most developed nations, hospitals hv capacities of evn 100 for effective in providing services.gys lets not politicize unecssarily n learn to contribute positively whr its due..never mind MUSHOTA.

  55. Most of you PF supporters criticising the building of the 150 bed capacity hospital were MMD members during the Kafupi days, can you tell us what Sata and FTJ built from 1991 to 2001?

  56. KK put up all other hospitals in Zed, and the MMD puts up one miniscule church-like building and call it a hospital! there appears to be no space for a mortuary, accommodation for staff, area for hospital transport and visitors parking, there is no incinerator, etc. This buidling was poorly designed and does not add reflect quality materials to last. Typical of shot-gun solutions implemented by the MMD. Within a few months, this will just turn out to be another eyesore for Lusaka and the designers busy shopping in foreign shopping malls with their politician friends after pocketing the loot as MMD!!

  57. PF pliz tell us which hopital SATA AND CHILUBA BUILT IN THEIRE 10 YEARS IN POWRE apart from looting our resources. BY the way, all MMD founder members who once served under Chiulba (nawakwi, chitala, mulogoti, scot, sondash etc) are in PF.

  58. but pliz wr is hospital being constructed en road to the hospital.y hide the area, lets full detail so that pipo near can confirm dont jus lie u *****s….change is cumin 4 sure.

  59. I salute Australia. You are a mature guy. I always admire your contributions. The hospital is beautiful with modern fittings. Most urban clinics in Lusaka are undergoing expansions. It is not about Levy but the party manifesto. The problem with PF cadres is that they dont read their party manifesto.

  60. You chaps in Diaspora that are illegal immigrants stuck up with expired visa and cannot travel to Zambia should be the last people be critical about the design. This picture is a side angle of the structure. Why don’t you come to Zambia and see the front of the hospital.

  61. for me the size of the hospital is fine. easy to manage considering our capacity to do so. may what the government should do is to put 4 other similar facilities in 4 accessible areas of lusaka. put up big monsters like UTH is not in our abilities.

  62. If you visit the UTH and its sorry wards, you will understand what an eyesore means. Without a people focused GRZ under the MMD we will continue to be treated like ants in a sugar-bowl targeted only for their rich friends to fumigate.

  63. Did you know that our hospitals are now dirtier than the way our school toilets used to be in the UNIP days? Only that we have incompetent leaders who claim to be educated but are essentially economic thieves in disguise?

  64. 150 BEDS YOU CALL IT A GENERAL HOSPITAL. WHAT A SHAME.. ZAMBIA WITH ITS CURRENT POPULACE REQUIRES A MULT GENERAL HOSPITAL WITH NOT LESS THAN A 1000 BEDS MIN. SHOULD BE MORE THAN uth

  65. 63 and 64 independent observer:
I dont agree with you my friend. Why should we start with inferior buildings and develop them later when we can do it now. What I am saying is that we have competent architects who can design excellent looking but cost effective and affordable structures. On the issue of the doctors, we all know that existing hospitals are understaffed. What gurantee do we have that the hospital will have adequate staff. You see my brother or sister when you are putting up a project you need to have a plan from inception to commissioning. I can forgive you because you are probably a sales man or farmer who does not understand the concept of project management in terms of value for money, time, cost and quality. you are behaving a like a typical uneducated cadre.

  66. Lusaka General Hospital is indeed a commendable developmental project by the Government,If people are provided with proper medical care,I believe even the 150 beds are enough because a good number will just be accessing Out Patient services. Therefore for this one MMD Party in Government must be commended and if it was meant to buy my vote this election year then I have a reason of making yet another decision of voting for the MMD.

  67. The best news is that Govt has made sure to avail funds to realize the completion of a people’s hospital.A rennaissance commenced in Mwanawasa’s tenure to revive development programmes and RB ensured continuity and added more valuable projects. Sata the saddist will be angry to learn that poor people will have a hospital next to their home.

  68. We’re a gaggle of volunteers and opening a brand new scheme in our community. Your website offered us with valuable info to paintings on. You’ve done a formidable job and our entire group will be grateful to you.
