A serious rift has emerged between Patriotic Front (PF) leader Michael Sata and members of the central committee who have accused their leader of leaking confidential information to newcomers in the party.
PF founder member, Sam Zulu said in Lusaka yesterday that some members of the central committee had indicated that there were differences in the opposition political party where Mr Sata had resorted to play a “role of a swinger.”
When contacted, Mr Sata confirmed that he had been doing so because he did not believe in gossip but wanted transparency in running of the party.
Mr Zulu said there were complaints among the senior members that Mr Sata had decided to embrace newcomers such as Panji Kaunda, former Zambian ambassador to Libya Mbita Chitala, former Defence minister George Mpombo, and former Works and Supply minister Mike Mulongoti at the expense of the ‘old faithful’.
Some members of the central committee have said Mr Sata was fond of reporting every piece of information which came on his desk by virtue of his position, a situation which had raised questions about his credibility as a leader.
They said Mr Sata was at the centre of promoting gossip in the top party hierarchy because he wanted to impress newcomers at the expense of old members.
“What is happening in the PF is real disaster because a lot of members of Parliament are now even planning to defect to the ruling MMD just after Parliament is dissolved.
“Having been a PF member and still with friends in the opposition political party, some members have confided in me that there is actually a serious crisis which has totally cracked the PF hierarchybecause of Mr Sata’s divide-and-rule tactics.
“There are complaints that there is too much gossip in the party such that one cannot even confide in the PF leader for fear of being reported to the person under discussion,” Mr Zulu said.
He said with such happenings, several PF MPs who did not even attend the National Constitutional Conference were now planning to defect to the ruling party once Parliament was dissolved.
According to some members of the central committee, Mr Sata had decided to sideline two once-upon-a-time vocal party spokespersons Wynter Kabimba and Given Lubinda, accusing the duo of failing to campaign for him effectively and now preferred to use Colonel Kaunda, Dr Chitala andMr Mpombo whom he had unleashed to discredit the Government.
He said although Mr Sata had accepted Mr Mulongoti, he had hinted to some of the senior PF members that he was reluctant to work with the former MMD chairperson for elections because of his inconsistencies, and that the PF leader did not have trust in him.
“In fact very soon you will hear that Mr Kabimba has resigned because he is bitter while Mr Lubinda who Mr Sata wants to contest Keembe Constituency in this year’s elections is frustrated because he knows that he cannot beat the incumbent MP, Ronnie Shikapwasha and now thinks Mr Sata just wants him out of the party limelight.
“As for Mr Kabimba, the problems with Mr Sata started just after his (Kabimba’s) father publicly condemned his son for working with the PF president,” Mr Zulu said.
Mr Sata confirmed that he had been giving out information in order to promote transparency in the party.
“I believe in transparency and that is why each time anyone talks about someone, I go and tell the person under discussion. What is wrong with me doing that? In fact that was what I was doing even when I was MMD national secretary.
“In fact that Zulu has never held any position in PF and he is now just playing the role of fufuleza (meaning Vuvuzela) for the MMD,” he said.
He said there was nothing wrong in him embracing the newcomers in PF, adding that there were no membership cards in his party to distinguish new members from old ones.

I have always urged PF members to be serious. Look here Sata says there are no members, cards to show old and new members. What this means is that whatever one invests in PF is a big loss. Politics is serious investment in terms of time and other resources but this man can do as he pleases. look at given lubinda of late, now its Winter, next it will be mumbi Phiri people must learn from what has happened to others. I don’t support PF. However, I think it is quite silly to argue that just because there are some differences of opinion within PF then it is a disaster. We see the same things happen in MMD and other parties but we don’t see similar screaming newspaper headlines!! Why can’t we be fair and sober with our analysis for once. These journalists are becoming boring, they are more dangerous than the politicians themselves. How can you have a party where there are no problems? That is thinking like a child. People have in a way forgotten the trouble that already exist in PF, this will show shortly when Parliament is dissolved. Mr. Sata has put his head in the sand as the proverbial Ostrich and when the results begin to pour in, he will cry foul. Mr. Sata has been heavily sedated by the misleading impressions his has been given by the Post and seductive chants of the urbanites whose take is ‘it is cool to support any dissent’ and it is absolutely unsurprising that Mr. Sata should remain where this ticklish is to be found.
However, the grim reality is that out there in the outskirts of our rural areas, where he will never have a chance to meet the populace, he will never hear that song that so ties him to town. Mr. President Sata is very right and solid. That is why all political bull dozers are following him, the likes Mpombo, Ka Mulongoti, Ba Major Panji, Chitala, VJ and yesterday was Vice President Lupando Mwape.
Of late mulongoti, chitala, mpombo and panji have been issuing statements as if they are all PF spokespersons. Statements that are suppose to be coming from the official spokesperson or other senior members are now coming these four. Obviously some people in PF have not taken this well. However, am not sure if the situation is really a crisis or just a break down in communication.
For people with eyes to see, there is absolutely nothing impressive about Sata to warrant why anyone should applaud him. The reality is that anyone who has worked with him will eventually find out that he is indeed a wrong person to work with. It is as simple as that. Those see him otherwise are those he throws bones at at a distance by which they get mesmerized. Anyone who has worked closely with Sata, all those mentioned in the article, including Guy Scott know for sure in their hearts that Sata is the last person to give the reins of power to.

# 21 right on! I once worked for DHL in Zambia and we had a white female managing director by the name of Carol White. Her policy was very simple, avoid bootlickers by calling them to her office in the presence of the person they talked about and confront them to prove that the accused was really quilty. The result of this was no gossiping, no bootlicking, hard working to impress and people got promoted because they deserved it. Tell and Shame the bootlickers is a great administration strategy and allows one to choose only the best among the available skilled! That type of leadership can be effective for a company boss but it would cause disastor for a head of state. A president is privy to a lot of classified information and he receives a lot of confidential reports from different people. If a president was to act the way Sata acts informers would think twice before telling him anything and that way he will miss out on vital information that may help him run the country. This type of behaviour can also lead to war. Imagine the Angolan president telling Sata that Namibia is planning to invade you and then he(Sata) goes to tell the Namibian president what the Angolan president said.

It is in this vein that we describe the PF as a RECYCLED BIN where redandant politicians such as, Chitala, Inonge Wina, Mpombo, Mulogoti, GBM, Nsanda, Bob Sichinga, Lupando Mwape, Panji Kaunda, Prof. Chirwa etc can be damped while awaiting for permanent deletion from the political limelight.
