Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) has sent its scouts in Mwachilele ward in Chongwe District to kill a stray lion that is terrorising villages in the area.
Chibengele Community School head teacher, Coillard Tembo confirmed the development to ZANIS in an interview in Chongwe yesterday.
Mr. Tembo said ZAWA sent wildlife officers to the area on Tuesday to capture the beast following reports from villagers claiming to have spotted it in the area.
He said the villagers are now living in constant fear for their lives and that of their domestic animals as the beast has now killed three cattle since spotted in the area.
And Chongwe District Commissioner, Japhen Mwakalombe has appealed to villagers in the affected area to restrict their movements until ZAWA officers kill the beast to avoid loss of lives.
Mr. Mwakalombe assured villagers that government through ZAWA is working hard to protect people’s lives and will soon trace the beast before it kills more livestock in the area.
Recently, ZAWA has laso received similar reports suggesting that three other beasts are suspected to have come from Kafue National Park in Kaindu area of Mumbwa district have been reportedly terrorizing villagers in the area.
Mr Kunda says the lives of innocent children trailing to school every morning are at stake because of the lions which are looming around in the area.
He further appealed to local authorities to move in to curb the situation as the lions pose a serious security risk in the area.
