Late President Levy Mwanawasa

Parliament heard yesterday that government spent over K2 billion on the construction of late Republican president Levy Mwanawasa’s mausoleum and grave.

Works and Supply Minister Gabriel Namulambe told Parliament that a sum total of the project was K2,876,147,959.20.

Mr Namulambe explained that government had engaged a construction firm called Messrs Yangts Jiang Enterprise Limited of Lusaka to construct the grave of the mausoleum of late Dr.Mwananwasa.

He revealed that the project was initially set to be completed by 20 April, 2011 but that could not be attained due to erratic funding.

Mr. Namulambe said the mausoleum would be expected to be completed on 20th July, this year.

He was responding to a question by Kanchibiya Patriotic Front (PF) Member of Parliament (MP) Davies Mwango who wanted to know which company has been contracted to construct the mausoleum for the late third republican president.

The parliamentarian also wanted to know the exact cost of the project and when it was due to be completed.

And the Works and Supply minister has maintained that the rehabilitation of roads across the country is on-going and as such, government has put in place a master plan to improve the road infrastructure.

Mr. Namulambe was responding to a question by Kanyama PF MP Colonel Gerry Chanda who wanted to know when the
Government will come up with a master plan to rehabilitate all the damaged bituminous roads province by province.

Col. Chanda also wanted to know how much such an exercise would cost and what the time-frame for undertaking the
rehabilitation of the roads.

  1. Why all that money? Let the dead rest & not go with money leaving other people suffering. No matter how much you that somebody, it’s pointless to spent such huge amount of money leaving other people suffering. That money could feed alot of people in our country, iye mayo yeeeeee.

  2. IT WILL SHEER WASTE OF MONEY.THE MAJORITY OF ZAMBIANS CAN NOT EVEN AFFORD TO BUY A SIMPLE COFFIN FOR THERE DEAD ONES AND SO ITS POINTLESS THAT THE GOVT HAS SPENT K 2BILLION ON THE LA TE MWANAWASA REMEMBERANCE.WE ALREADY HAVE SPENT A LOT OF MONEY ON HIS GRAVE AT THE EMBESSY PARK.PLEASE DONT GET ME WRONG FELLOW BLOGGERS.ONE CAN BE REMEMBER ED AT HEART IF ONE MISSES THEIR LOVED ONES. AND DONT HAVE TO WASTE K2 BILLION WHILST THE POOR ZAMBIANS ARE BADLY SUFFERING

  3. This is the problem we have in Zambia, misplaced priorities and misappropriation of funds!!!!!!! I think this project is unnecessary and too costly, that money could be used on better things to alleviate the suffering of people at least in one community even if it means for the people of Kalikiliki only.

  4. PEOPLE WHY WAIST SO MUCH ON SOMEONE WHO IS DEAD AND WILL NOT COME BACK,YET THERE PEOPLE WITHOUT FOOD,NO MEDICINES,NO EDUCATION.PEOPLE ARE POOR AND YOU JUST WAIST THAT MONEY ON A USELESS THING OF A DEAD MAN,AS IF HE IS THE FIRST TO DIE,SORRY BLOGGERS THAT I HAVE TO SAY THIS.THINGS HAVE GONE BAD IN ZAMBIA,WE ALSO HAVE PEOPLE WHO PASSED AWAY,AND COULD’NT EVEN AFFORD A COFFIN,THIS IS VERY A VERY BAD WAY TO DO THINGS.THATS TOTALLY MISAPPROPRIATION OF FUNDS WITH CAN BE USED TO ALLEVIATE THE LEVEL OF POVERTY AMONG THE ZAMBIANS.

  5. Someone should teach ZANIS how to round numbers. The actual price tag was K2.786 billion and is a lot closer to K3 billion than K2 billion as stated in the headline.

Nearly K2.8bn (or even K3 billion) would have been a more honest way to put it!

  6. In the Egyptian Books of The Dead, there has never been such an expensive grave for any Pharao. The Mwanawasa shrine is already respectable enough, we like it the way it is. MMD should not list Mwanawasa as a campaign project. He did enough for RB by…. RB should respect Levy and let him REST IN ETERNAL PEACE. Just deal with Sata in other ways.
    # 6 Thanks, that K3 billion can be used on constructing a housing unit for street children and the blind suffering in the cold nights of this month June.

  7. They floated late Mwanawasa ‘s coffin m.h.s.i.p.for their CAMPAIGN  INTENTION not out of love and respect ,

  8. RB/MMD at it again to use Late Mwanawasa dearth as a campaign propaganda tool by shouting about his mausoleum finishing.RB/MMD riding on Mwanawasa successes BUT rubbished and kicked out with hate those who built the successes with Mwanawasa and EXCHANGED IT WITH A PALTRY GABRIEL NAMULAMBE POSITION to fool Mwanawasa loyalists and lovers that by keeping NAMULAMBE they are showing that they (RB/MMD) respect and love Mwanawasa sympathisers and lovers.

  9. We are told Zambia is a poor country when tax payers money can be spent on someone who is dead. That money could have been used to pay off retirees who are laungshing.

  10. We are told that Zambia is a poor country and yet we can spend tax payers money recklessly on a dead man. That money should have been used to pay some retirees who have been langushing for a long time. I don’t think that Levy’s tomb is a priority.
