‘Barring of State-Media at PF conference a wake up call’

Share

Hope for Human Rights has advised managements at the Zambia Daily Mail, Times of Zambia and ZNBC to take the barring of their Editorial staff at the just-ended PF conference as a wake-up call.

Organization’s executive director smart Chanda said that the PF cannot be blamed for having barred that reporters from the public media because they have in most cases been used to scandalize the PF leader Michael Sata.

He said that what the public media needs to do is to ensure that it upholds high professional standards by giving equal coverage to people with divergent Views saying this will help in restoring public confidence.

And Foundation for democratic process has observed the need for the media bodies such has Media institute for Southern Africa (MISA) Zambia, and the Press Association of Zambia (PAZA) to mediate for reconciliation between the media and political parties in the country.

FODEP executive Director McDonald Chipenzi says that the journalists are committed to their job and that they have nothing to do with the biased editorial content that is published.

Mr. Chipenzi has since called for harmony between the political parties and the media in the country especially at a time when the country is heading to the polls.

  1. This fake Hope for Human Rights NGO has nothing worthwhile to say.If MMD had to behave in the same manner to ban the Post journalists who day in day out never spare to scandalize leaders in this party what signal would be sent to the local and international community about freedom of the press. The best medicine PF WOULD have administered to the Public media would have been to allow them cover their convention and see to what extent this convention would be shown in their presses. You must understand that it is politicians like PF who need the press more than the press need these fellows.Remember when Sata had a tiff with the Post alleging that the Post were benefiting more from covering him than the paper was.All the Post did was to withdraw coverage of Sata.He ended begging the Post.

  2. @2 Those Reporters were going to act as follows -The Trojan Horse is a tale from the Trojan War, It was the stratagem that allowed the Greeks finally to enter the city of Troy and end the conflict.
In one version, after a fruitless 10-year siege, the Greeks constructed a huge wooden horse, and hid a select force of 30 men inside. The Greeks pretended to sail away, and the Trojans pulled the horse into their city as a victory trophy. That night the Greek force crept out of the horse and opened the gates for the rest of the Greek army, which had sailed back under cover of night. The Greek army entered and destroyed the city of Troy, decisively ending the war.

  3. in the last statement in 2 above should read ” Remember when Sata had a tiff with the Post alleging that the Post were benefiting more from covering him than the HE was.All the Post did was to withdraw coverage of Sata.He ended up on his knees begging the Post to lift the boycott”.

  4. PF barred state media MMD has never barred the Post who is democratic and non democratic between the two.It cant be a wake up call for the state media,i think its a wake up call for zambians to start analyse issues critically. It nmeans even that Post wont criticise sata if he becam,e president even when he is wrong.Am sure the Post will even be closed to shut them up with their critics should sata become president

  5. #2 Ken Mpombo why not also comment on the MMD(William Banda) barring post reporters and Sata from attending FTJ’s funeral. Let’s be fair when making these comments…..Why this noise from Pro-MMD pipo?Chiwamila galu……………!!!!!!

  6. I think it is lack of reason to compare “The Post” with the public media. The public media is run by all Zambians through our taxes (and levy) where as The Post is a private business. The Public media must set the agenda and cover all people equally since we all pay for it. The Post can do what they like since they are private. If we don’t like their stories, we simply don’t buy the paper or advertise in it.

  7. The problem with the state media but govt controlled is that they are being run by Dickson Jere from state house. They think by attacking Sata everyday, Zambians will Vote for MMD. I dont think so. Most Zambians infact are very annoyed. They see MMD as a evil as they try to potray Sata. DONT TELL ME RB IS AN ANGEL!! Far from it.

  8. The Post iz very consistent in reporting such that one cannot find reazon to chase away it’s reporterz.

  9. Whether public media(govt.-owned) or private they all operate under the same environment, same rules of the game all should be seen to be fair to all coz they’re serving the Zambian people AND NOT MMD GOVT>>.PERIOD!!

  10. Bloggers, public media houses ar 4 al of us tax payers, citizens of zed across political groupings, hence de demand 4just coverage. Unlike private media houses where individual owners choose way 2go. Thats de difference, tek it or leav it, its de truth!!!

  11. The Post ( Homo Newspaper) cant be spared just because they are a private entity, they have a responsibility to be objective and factual, just because they are privately run does not guarante them to write as they please.Just in 2006 PF cadres wanted to destroy the same Post because of their reporting.

  12. All media is supposed to seek and report the truth. Unfortunately, they are human beings and they don’t always do so. The Post writes to demonise RB because he refused to rescue Zambian Airways. The state Media are reporting as they do because if they did not, there would be no media to argue the state’s case in view of a very hostile private media and anti-government NGOs. As for LPM he made peace with the Post by giving them favours. For the moment our political space will continue to be very polarised and will be like this until we get a moderate voice in the private media probably from foreign investment. The BBC is such a media, reporting the truth with moderation even though they can not criricise the Queen.

Catherine Namugala is the dumbest minister ever! One of the many reasons MMD should go!

How can a country promoting itself use musicians from another country to do the job. Why? Zambian artistes are not good enough to promote their own country? They only good enough to sing at thieves’ funerals. Is that it?

Which country promotes its tourism in this manner. Does Congo call Maiko Zulu or JK to promote their country? A people that dont believe in themselves can never prosper.!! Never!

  14. By the way,the same Post has fought everybody including private citizens,I cant that kantemba to cover me no ways.Just look at how they have blacklisted Prof Clive Chirwa who a few months ago was their darling! reason,he refused to join Pa Fwaka.

  15. Rupia Dairy Mail, Times of State house, Zambia nonsense Banda and his cooperates (ZNBC) these cannot not change the way of working as long we have undemocratic govt who are thieves fearing thier thieft to be exposed when there is change of govt. for mmd is death and life.

  16. I don’t see why the government continues to hold majority shares in the  two Daily papers in a Multi Party democracy, yes they had their usefulness in the one Party State but now it time to face reality….no matter what you do; how you many reconciliation meetings you have or whoever comes to power be it PF these print media papers will forever be biased to the ruling party.
As for ZNBC there is need to reform that institution and make it answerable to an independent body or committee made up of  Heads of Media Organizations like  Press Association of Zambia and other civic bodies who are also empowered to appoint  the Director General and approved by a Parliamentary committee or vice versa..

  17. REMEMBER POST IS A PRIVATELY OWNED PAPER. DAILY MAIL AND ZNBS ARE OWNED BY STATE AND IT IS THE TAX PAYERS MONEY THEY ARE USING SO THEY HAVE NO RIGHT TO CHOOSE WHO TO SUPPORT COS POLITICAL PARTIES COME AND GO. WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THEM WHEN PE OR HH COME INT POWER IN 3 MONTHS TIME.
REMEMBER RB WAS NOT EVEN THE FOUNDING MEMBER OF MMD. ALL THE FOUNDERS HAVE BEEN SILENCED BY THE FORMER UNIPIST.

  18. PLEASE EDUCATE ME ON THIS ONE QUESTION. DOES THE POST SCANDALISE THOSE IN GOVERNMENT AND IF SO WHY ARE THEY NOT TAKEN TO THE COURTS OF LAW. TO FABRICATE STORIES OVER SOMEONE IS SURELY UNLAWFUL. DID THEY STEAL THE 30MILLION US DOLLARS AS ALLEDGED. AND CALLING THE PERSON WHO SAID SO A LIAR IN THEIR EDITORIALS, DOES THAT AMOUNT TO SCANDAL. IS IT NOT THE POST PAPERS THAT CHANDA CHIIMBA 111 IS MOSTLY USING TO DIG ON MR SATA. HOW DO SOMEONE SAY THEY HAVE BLACKLISTED SO AND SO, BETTER THEN THAN TO WRITE FALSEHOODS ON THOSE PEOPLE IF AT ALL SUCH THINGS ARE THERE. APART FROM INFORMING THE PUBLIC THEY ARE AS WELL IN BUSINESS , YOU MAKE NEWS THEY COVER YOU TO SELL. THEY ARE BETTER THAN ZNBC, TZ AND ZMD, JUST LIKE ZAMBIAN WATCHDOG IS BETTER THAN ZEDLEAKS AND LT PERIOD. CAN YOU COMPARE HH TO SIULAPW

  19. Do you still trust ALA BEE? The man is a stounch UNIP and you are yet to see his divide and rule. As UNIP we are very comfortable so far and watch us. We are dismantling MMD so systematically. Donchi Kubeba ALA BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  20. POST may not be public media but they are currently running on loans from public institutions like DBZ, unpaid ZRA taxes etc…. …and have no intention to pay back. So a bit public if you like.

  21. PF stooges should know they will never rule..you have been reported to American govt over the Afghanistan issue..mwpaya ..you will be investigated and banned..hahahah..PF wawa..doomed!!
