FORMER President Kenneth Kaunda did not attend the Patriotic Front (PF) conference to endorse any candidate, his office has said.
This is contrary to PF president Michael Sata’s statement on Hot FM Radio that Dr Kaunda has publicly associated himself with the opposition party.
Dr Kaunda’s special assistant for press and public relations Sunday Musonda said in an interview yesterday that the former President did not go to the conference to support or endorse anyone.
He said Dr Kaunda did not even address the delegates and that no-one can say he went to Mulungushi Rock of Authority, the venue for the convention, with any agenda.
“If there are any people who would want others to believe that Dr Kaunda’s presence at the convention was to endorse anyone, I would like to state that the former President went to the PF convention by invitation and as a father of the nation,” Mr Musonda said.
He said Dr Kaunda also attended the MMD convention and would attend any political party function on invitation.
Some diplomats also attended the PF conference and were also present at the MMD convention on invitation.
Mr Sata told Hot FM Radio in an interview monitored in Lusaka yesterday that he was grateful to Dr Kaunda for attending the conference.
“We are grateful to the founding father of the nation and we feel proud that we were able to attract a man like Dr Kaunda.
It is the first time in 10 years that he has publicly associated himself with PF,” Mr Sata claimed.
The PF conference, which opened on Monday, was expected to close yesterday.
Mr Sata went through unopposed for the position of party president and will be the PF candidate in the 2011 tripartite elections.

I was one of the people who where caught off guard when PF announced that they would have a convention. I watched from the sidelines out of curiosity to see a historical move that PF made in efforts to democratize the party. I must say I was faced with disappointment.
Firstly, the intolerance shown to divergent views by barring certain sections of the media. That was unacceptable and unjustifiable. Second disappointment came from the fact that Sata had doctored a list for the “Central Committee” and the list went unchallenged. No ballots were cast concerning the “Central Committee”. In fact, the ballot boxes left unused. Hearing this made me almost chock on my coffee as I was left in disbelief. What a convention sure.

PF has made no efforts to adopt the tenets of democracy.They have once again given credence to the statements that PF is undemocratic. This convention was nothing more than a window dressing exercise in futility. It was a sham of a convention and I am shocked that people can still look to the PF as an alternative in a democratic society. PF must take lessons from UPND and MMD on how to hold a successful democratic convention instead of a hoodwink sham of a convention.
If that is not enough, we were once again treated to another 90 day economic miracle promise concerning Mulungushi Textiles.

Mr. Sata must also realize that Dr. Kaunda is a statesman who will attend any convention he is invited to in Zambia. He made a principle decision to attend the PF convention not out to endorse anyone but as a duty to support a democratic process (or lack of it). Mr. Sata should be careful with running his mouth. He should not rush to make statements without thinking on it first. Did Dr. Kaunda explicitly say “I endorse Mr. Sata for the presidency”? If not then Mr. Sata issued the “endorsement” claim erroneously.

At the end of the day, this is democracy and people have a choice to choose whoever they want to lead them. I just hope people will deeply think about their decision. People should not vote based on “chimwela” but based on who can best move the nation forward.

Sata ‘receives’ US$45million from Taiwan
A local website has published an email in which the Patriotic Front is alleged to have received 45 Million US dollars from unnamed friends in Taiwan and Afganistan to help the party in this year’s general elections.
The email purported to have been written by PF’s Chairman for local Government and Housing Given Lubinda to Party Secretary General Winter Kabimba has been published on the Zambian watchdog website.
In the email dated July, 1, 2011, Mr Lubinda is further complaining to Mr Kabimba over some land undertakings that have been made to the Taiwanese which will result into Chawama, Kanyama and Mandevu compounds being partially demolished.
Mr Lubinda is in the email complaining that he foresees riots in Lusaka, if the land undertaking is to be implemented.
The email further indicates that Mr Lubinda disagrees with the party’s plans of addressing youth unemployment.
In the email, Mr Lubinda has revealed that the party intends to draft youths from Lusaka and the Coperbelt into the army through a 3 months crash programme and later on send them to war torn countries like Sudan and Afganistan as peace keepers.
The email further cautions the party not to trust George Mpombo, Mike Mulongoti and Mbita Chitala and only use them until after the elections.
Mr Lubinda is further in the email, urging the party to find ways of removing what he terms the tag that the party has where there is no distinction between the party and its leader Micheal Sata.
But when contacted for a comment Mr Lubinda questioned the authenticity of the email.
He said he did not want to get into what he termed unnecessary conflicts with the public media, accusing them of being paid agents of the MMD.
And Mr Kabimba has refused to be drawn into commenting on an email he did not author and referred all queries to the purported author of the email.

The Post had a headline that KK ATTENDS PF CONFERENCE this was meant to show voters that even KK is associating with PF hence the DAILY MUGS had to find a way of countering this and they have found it by quoting or misquoting a radio station. RB announce election date so that our media houses can get back to real journalism.

It is a well known fact that KK once said Sata is not Presidential material. So in this vein, Sata and PF were excited to see KK show some semblance of public association with the PF by attending their convention. Sata has not expressly stated that KK has endorsed him or the PF. He is simply saying, while KK has in the past maligned his Presidential ambitions, it is gratifying to see that the old man accepted the PFs invitation to attend the convention. Our media houses need to stop taking statements out of context. Please inform our people without bias. Pf people must begin to put Zambia ahead of their egocentricity. Most people in pf know the limitation of capacity that Sata has: his dictatorial tendencies, his age, his ailing heart condition, lack of democracy and so on and so forth. Indeed, even amongst themselves, pf people, will suggest that his rule should be limited to only a single 5 year term, acknowledging that, on account of his ill health, he should not risk beyond that term. But why should he be given a term at all, when he is sick?
Reading most of the comments here the impression is that there are two desperate sides. The near logical one that wants Sata kept out of State House spurred perhaps the view he will take the country decades back. I am not sure this group cares much who ends up in State House as long as it is not Sata. The fear is somewhat justified seeing as Sata has been in previous regimes and there is not much to admire.
On the opposing side are the illogical lot that adore Sata the individual. There is no ideological reason for this at all because Sata has not aticulated one. His populism is clearly working. The latter group needs to smell the coffee.

Mr. Michael Sata, out of his own volition, out of his own felt physical limitation afforded by his ailing health, must decide to pull out of the race and thus save the nation from another potential and unnecessary national tragedy. By doing so, he will achieve for himself, in Zambians mind, a legendary status for many generations to come. I dont think Sata’s statement of “attracting” such a person to their conference can literally be taken as him saying PF was endorsed. By implication, Dr Kaunda’s presence at PF’s convention may indicate that he has nothing against the party, which he would have done with MMD had he wanted. Mind you, he a professional politician who is now and then consulted by many heads of states and political parties. I dont see anything wrong in Sata’s statement, unless it is being thought KK’s presence at the convention was wrong. I have just been reading comments on this site where different supporters of the opposition paries seem to be nake to nake at each other, especially PF and UPND supporters. Ladies and gentlemen, the fact that all of you are able to view and post your comments on this site implies you are all educated. I wish to give both camps my balanced view and I am hoping someone reasonable will get sense out of what I saying. Firstly, these quarrels between Sata and HH’s supporters are the very reasons the pact could not hold. There is a tendency to underrate one another and therefore not appreciate each other’s influence and support. PF supporters do not seem to realize the in roads HH has made in the strong holds of MMD (especially, those that previously were for UPND).
A CONTINUATION TO 155: I was going to Lusaka during the time MMD was just having their convention. I happen to pick two senior officials as I reached Kabwe. Believe not gentlemen and ladies, the two were celebrating that they to som e extent could afford to relax abit now that the PACT was no loner there. Whether you like it or not MMD has an upper hand in this year’s election. This behaviour of overrating yourselves can never take anyone anyway. What is going to happen is that MMD will be second in the strong hold of PF and UPND while these two will third in the stronghold of each other. And you know what this means mathematically

KK attended MMD Mulungushi 2011 Convention where, as Sata in PF, RB went thru unopposed to be party’s undisputed (awaiting the opinion of CJ on Milton Phiri’s letter) candidate in the 2011 elections.
there was no fuss about KK endorsing RB, what we instead heard was that Col. Kaunda must be shamed for talking ill of MMD when his father was in attendance at their convention (suggesting he had endorsed RB).
