Police on Saturday morning fought running battles with Kalingalinga residents who rioted after a police reserve shot and killed a youth in the area.

The named youth who earns a living by selling smoked beef outside a named night club in Kalingalinga was shot around 03:00 hours on Saturday after police tried to stop a fight at the premises

Police used full force as they picked up some people who were found burning tyres and throwing stones.

As the confusion worsened, riot police officers were compelled to fire rubber bullets and tear gas canisters to disperse the irate residents who had mobilised in huge numbers.

In acts of retaliation, some residents burnt tyres and threw stones at motorists while others attempted to set Kalingalinga police post on fire.

The residents vowed to avenge the death of the youth identified as Boniface Sikachelela whom they described as a peaceful person.

Alick Nkhata and Kamloops roads were briefly blocked by residents who continued to burn tyres and planks.

Lusaka Province Police Commissioner Charity Katanga says the named reserve officer has been arrested and detained.

Ms Katanga appealed for calm as the police investigate the matter.

Meanwhile calm has returned in the area , however, police have kept vigil.

  1. This is unfortunate! Both the Police and the residents should be measured in their response to this incident otherwise more innocent lives will be lost.

  2. let juctice be done, please try this officer according to the laws of the land, a free and fair trail, if he is found to have committed murder , sentence him in accordance with the law

  3. How come the Post does not report this issue on it’s website. is it because it is not a Barostland case where Mmembe comes from? Any way too bad for the boy. Fine the bar owner and arrest punish those who were fighting because of beer or women. Condolences to the bereaved family but throwing stones at the innocent is unacceptable.

  4. I wonder how well Zambia Police trains its staff these days. This is pure incompetence on the part of the police – failure to diffuse public commotion peacefully, which is the core mandate of any RIOT POLICE UNIT. SHAME ON YOU!

  5. Appoint commission of inquiry! Too bad life is lost! Governance is not as easy as others think. Will the President be held responsible as well for this? Police officers are individuals. Soon those in power will realise that they apportioned unfair blame on their predecessors.

  6. Worse off than Mongu given these guys did not make any threrats to form own country and did not threated to ‘deport’ non-lozi’s.

Commission of enquiry required. The results should be predermined like in the Mongu-counterpart…..

  7. sad events indeed, i guess the police also do get under pressure, its easier to say punish the policeman….these events have been happening for sometime now,and these are the things that lead to shootings in most cases…..i think zambians need to look at these issues more informatively than to just condemn….just before the elections i passed thru mtendere unexpectedly found myself right in the middle of stone throwing, breaking cars, and burning tyres..it was not good…to see a stone flying at my car and crushing all windows…..one can be tempted….

  8. i was amazed at how everyone blamed RB for those actions, and killing of a person by a mortorist, which led to the mtendere riots….in this similar case of today, would people blame Mr Sata for such actions and killings?

  9. MAYELA club still exist? ist indeed a nice place , i have survived from that place, no defilements just negotiate for pure business.

  10. RIOTERS SHOULD BE REALISTIC. THREATENING TO BURN UP POLICE POST IN THE AREA WILL NOT BE THE SOLUTION. WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE POLICE LEAVE THE PLACE? INCREASED THEFT, KILLINGS, CASES OF RAPE JUST TO MENTION A FEW. THE OFFICER BLUNDERED AND IN THIS ERA, BE ASSURED THAT HE WILL FACE THE LAW. BUT AGAIN YOU HAVE TO QUESTION WHAT THE GUY WAS DOING OUT AT THAT TIME OUT! THERE ISN’T A STATION LIKE INTER-CITY WHERE ALMOST EVERY MINUTE THERE ARE BUSES COMING IN AND GOING OUT. I WONDER! ALL THE SAME, MHSRIP.

  11. No. 10, Note that Mayela nigt club is a six to six , 24–7 prostitutes den. It is not a bus stop as you put it. Anything can happen anytime.
And in case you have no idea, the owner of Mayela Night Club is a Mafia who even killed a friend with a gunshot in pressence of police officers when he wanted to expose some deals he was involved in.
If you want to prove that ask some Zambians who know this issue.

  12. live bullets on protestors form UNIP, MMD AND PF govt. its not 1 person its the crap police, when shld an officer have live bullets?? never at all, in peace time Zambia. This makes me sicklive bullets shld only be issued to officer under shot to kill orders.

  13. Those who kill by the sword die by the sword. Chaona munzako chapita, mawa chili pali iwe. Obviously there is no need for a commission of inquiry just as there was none needed over kwa Mungu. How many police shootings have tken place pf started ruling. You will be naive to think that more wont take place.

  14. The way i undertand things is that a reseve police is not fully trained to use fire arms. He is just like a lorry boy. Why was he given amunition to stop fracas? The gun may have gone off accidentaly… just thinking.

  15. THANKS #11. BUT ALL THE SAME ITS NOT A SAFE PLACE, AT LEAST FOR ANY NOBLE PERSON. THE POLICE NEED TO SHUT DOWN THE CLUB OR SIMPLY ORDER THE OWNER TO BE RUNNING HIS BUSINESS FOR SOME HOURS AND NOT BEYOND 22HRS. WE DON’T NEED SUCH PLACES IN OUR COUNTRY AS THEY ARE SOURCES OF DIRT. ARE WE GOING TO REACH A ZERO AIDS SOCIETY IN THE MIDDLE OF THAT CRAP?
