The United Party for National Development (UPND) have said they will not be intimidated by the ruling Patriotic Front’s efforts to suppress the opposition in the country.
Party General Secretary Winstone Chibwe says the UPND will be stronger than ever in providing checks and balances to the PF government.
Mr. Chibwe explains to Qfm in an interview that the opposition is still strong despite attempts by government to weaken it by enticing members of the opposition with Ministerial positions.
He says the beauty of democracy is that people have the ultimate decision to make on the performance of a particular party in power.
Mr. Chibwe has since challenged Zambians to assess the performance of the PF since assuming office with regards to their campaign promise of transforming Zambia within 90 days of being in office.
He has also charged that recent defections of opposition members to the ruling PF are stage managed by the PF leadership who he accuses of being bent on weakening the opposition.

The problem is UPND lacks strategy and cannot read the mood and what people want to hear. UPND is better placed to convince the Zambians that they can offer alternative to what PF may not be able to achieve, but their stance is condemning everything, turning tribal and mocking even the people who voted for PF forgetting they will at one point go to these very people to solicit for votes.
They are educated but wisdom is at a distance and they should try to reach out for it. Sometimes just copy what the ADD Alliance for Democracy and Development opposition has been so far.
Right now people are expecting change in many aspects of their lives, and they want to see PF deliver on its many promises. It is the duty for the opposition to come closer to the people and help them out.
What Chibwe has said is not wrong for we objective and realistic people want a strong and reasonable opposition. We don’t want anyone to be intimided. However ,if he includes those being investigated as being the opposition that is being intimideted is sad and it shows myopic thinking. We need the opposition to be strong for democracy to function. My problem is that we have too many political parties in Zambia, this is a reflection of how selfish some people can be. Yes, it is their democratic right but some parties even fail to mobilise a dozen of supporters. My proposal is the integration of some of the smaller parties. This is the time for talks to solidify the opposition. PF has the power now and will use it to weaken the opposition.
