THE Government has advised former Republican president Rupiah Banda to choose between clinging on to the MMD presidency and losing out on his emoluments.

Chief Government spokesperson, Given Lubinda said Mr Banda should stop ‘shedding crocodile tears’ because he had an option of choosing between remaining in active politics or retiring so that he could access his benefits.

Mr Lubinda said it was a pity that despite being a president of Zambia for three years, Mr Banda could not correctly interpret the Benefits of Former Presidents Act.

The Act states that a former president who engages in active politics cannot be deemed to have retired, hence his benefits could not be paid.

Mr Banda on Sunday said it was not fair for the Government to discontinue paying him his emoluments, insisting that he was not involved in active politics.

He said he was merely holding on to the MMD presidency to facilitate a smooth transition while the former ruling party prepared to hold its extraordinary convention in April next year.

However, Mr Lubinda said it was shocking that Mr Banda could not interpret such a simple and clear law concerning his emoluments.

“He has to choose whether to give up politics and get his benefits or remain as president of the MMD and lose out because that is what the law stipulates.”

  1. All PF kwangalas are rogues!!So jealous of MMD success that they can’t breath but witch hunt all the way!!!Salary or MMD is ludacris!!Shame on LOWDOWN PF!!

  2. Awe kwena ba Banda nabo ninshi baleshupila kanshi? Am sure he understands what the law stipulates but he is just taking chances lol. Yaba ! Tabomfwa ba former Kateka ba Banda lol.

  3. Hon Lubinda is not a man to tell lies, he is a good servant of the Zambian people, the law must be followed even former Presidents should abide by the law, if anything they should serve as an example to ordinary zambians just like Dr KK is doing, Mwanawasa (mhrip) would have been another good example. So Mr Banda should follow the law

  4. Really Given you can’t even spell Lubinda alone without help. The constable took you from your brothel in Kabwata and put you in a position to voice your grief over (your superior) RB not understanding the President’s Benefit Act?!? I’m surprised!!!
Be magnanimous and give respect to our former leaders, because you are so proud of your big mouth and appreciate that you are in power because for 20 years they worked on a process called democracy and they let go of power to allow others reach power. Their only mistake was to allow such people like you to reach power. Tourist Attraction

  5. Ba Banda balwashi, tabalokutontonya bwino, next BP will shoot up, because he seems not to understand the law, still thinking he is the president. Balwashi mu mutwe bwaka.

  6. RB should respect the rule of law. The law on this matter are clear, and RB knows that, so he should not take zambian people into comedy over his benefits when he knows what the law says. choose MMD PRESIDENCY OR BENEFITS.

  7. That is how it is when you put laws just to punish one person.Chiluba had put that to punish kk,and they all forgot about it thinking it will never happen to them. When you put laws make sure it benefits all the citizens because it will catch up with you.so #1 Lubinda is just implimenting what MMD had put in place! play of the game……

  8. GIVEN STOP THIS MADNESS!! AWAY WITH YOUR BENEFITS, IF I WERE RB I WOULD CONTINUE GIVING MY FULL SUPPORT TO MMD AND CAMPAIGN ESPECIALLY IN MSANZALA RB PRESENCE IS REQUIRED!

  9. EVEN IF YOU HATE, THIS ONE IS REALLY A MATTER OF COMMON SENSE, REALLY. SOME ARE EVEN USING VULGAR LANGUAGE. JUST GOES TO SHOW. MUKAFWA NE CHIFUKUSHI. KWENA MULI MA GENIUS ZO ONA.

  10. You elders are a disgrace, bad examples. PF we will also hold you accountable for the resources you are using for witchhunting. RB its farming time get your benefits and go back to the farm.

  11. Dis(honourable) Lubinda, firstly you must respect the office of former president, secondly is that the new way of communicating in PF i.e. playing to the gallery instead of writing letters and memos? Thirdly, KK was sent to Angola and China to do politics for president Sata but he is still entitled to his benefits, can you therefore define what is menat by “engaging in active politics”. I have not heard RB utter a single political word of active politics.

  12. PF chaps must appreciate what RB left for you otherwise God will take it away. RB left foreign reserves, low inflation, bumper maize harvest etc, the economic fundamentals and ingredients required to reduce poverty, and you have never thanked him for those important things. Give him his dues, he has said that he is not engaged in active politics, or engage him in dialogue instead of via Times of Zambia. Are you afraid that he may give embarrass you with a few facts ffrom his massive information on you guys?

  13. These kinds of squabbles are not necessary at all. This is why some heads end up clinging to power for fear of victimisation after they retire in Africa. Let him facilitate the transition he is talking of then give him his dues. Why behave like you are school kids refusing to share an orange? You are all Zambians after all…he served that country and was professional enough to accept defeat but you seem bent on just humiliating him…why? Why humiliate a fellow African yet your whole economy is run by foreigners?
