MINISTER of Sport, Youth and Child Development Chishimba Kambwili has said that Government will not allow marketeers to leave designated trading places to sell their merchandise on the streets.
Speaking when he paid a courtesy call on Kitwe mayor Chileshe Bweupe on Thursday, Mr Kambwili said street vending is a worldwide problem which needs to be controlled.
“We can come up with Saturday markets or any other market day but not every day trading on the streets. Shoprite is one company whose business is being negatively affected and yet it contributes a lot of money to Government in taxes,” he said.
Mr Kambwili said there is need for traders to make use of designated trading facilities instead of selling their commodities on the streets.
He was also shocked that the Formular One road rehabilitation project in Kitwe is not doing well, saying the project is working well in Luanshya where he is member of Parliament for Roan.
And Mr Bweupe said developmental projects are on course in Kitwe but expressed disappointment on poor road infrastructure, street vending and illegal taxi operators.
Mr Bweupe said there is need to work on township roads and other infrastructure in Kitwe.
He told the minister that he had received reports that Shoprite management has complained of loss of business due to street vendors who are selling their merchandise on the door-steps of the supermarket.

This is NOT a WORLD-WIDE problem at all. Check Namibia, there is NO street vending, anywhere there. Botswana does not have street vending, but people do set up roadside stalls to sell things. Namibia DOES NOT HAVE any of such a thing as known in Zambia.
IWE DZIKO LANGA DO YOU EVEN KONW THE MEANING OF STREET VENDING??? OR HAVE YOU EVER BEEN TO THESE COUNTRIES BEFORE??? USE GOOGLE WISELY TO SEARCH FOR THE MEANING OF STREETISM. DONT TALK IF YOU ARE IGNORANT COZ YOU ARE EMBARASSING YOURSELF
Your president using his “Presidential Decree”legalised street vending. Are you going to use your “Ministerial Decree”to reverse the wrong decision? And point of correction, street vending is not a worldwide problem.Where I live there is no such nonsense
Our councils have failed to function with street vending around because of presidential directive. How can South Africa respect us? GRZ has failed us for for not demanding that South Africans coming into Zambia or going out of Zambia should have yellow fever certificates. We call it receprocal. How can SA respect us when our govt thinks that SA is too powerful to be told off by Zambia that depends on SA? Yet SA depends on Zambia on a lot things. How can SA respect us? May be we needed this guy Kambuili to remain a little longer as Foreign Affairs minister. Most of the other ministers including Guy Scott are functioning like healess chickens. They can challenge Sata on street vending and moving districts. I leave you to answer my questions.
How is this a sport, youth and child ministry issue?
so tauchinja mwaice kanshi. umwana shunfwa aile namafi kubuko. e Levy.. sorry i mean Kambwili.
Its not only shoprite complaining, all business houses have been affected by this populist senseless decree by the Serpent. How much do the pf vendors contribute towards taxes? Zero, and some President with inferiority complex allows this nonsesnse.Street vending has never been a worldwide problem you Luashya guy.
this zombie is now irritating us..you chaps said it should be legalised just like gayism..!why worry about it now..?
Yes God point of order Mr good minister. Street vending is not world wide problem. I know you used that psychologically because you did not want Sata to tink that you know better than he. Sata is the problem behind street vending. He cleaned up Lusaka because he was under KK and we gave him the title ‘man of action’. Now he is no longer a man of action. A man of action functioning as head of state should have cleaned up our streets long time ago. No wonder South Africa is demanding yellow fever certificates from us. Soon, they will demand cholera injection certificates from us.
You are going against your boss’s decree. Or Is it another case of failing to interpret Govt policy by cabinet ministers? Since street vending has been legalised by the President and you on the other side of the scale are saying it should be controlled, to what extent should the control be effected?
Lelo elo ya guwa film! what is the response from HE to this? I cant wait to hear hmmn!
Kambwili and sata are liars
Looks like Mr Kambwili is so indesplined that he cannot control how much to eat? That obesity I’m seeing is not good for u sir. U need to tone down on your eating, and if possible hit the gym before it’s too late. Bu katubi tabwawama
Kambwili shud lean to seave what he says.Is he saying that mc made a wrong decision for allowing venders?
When is our government going to get serious, all they can talk about is street vending and the massive plunders that MMD made, we need to focus on the more important things at hand, like healthcare and education. And added to this why the hell is a sports minister commenting on street vending?!?!?!? Get serious PF or you will be booted out like mmd. We should take heed from Rewanda a good example to follow! :d
This chap has been moved around a lot and has forgotten which ministry he belongs.
Ati the hon mr minister has been moved around too much within a short period of time he has fortten which minstry he is working under! hahahaha! Bena Zambia you are ruthlessly andbrutally hilarious! Yaaaaaaba!
The street vending issue should be addreess, apart from the bad roads in Kabwe the street venders have made kabwe one of the dirtiest place’s on earth. Please can someone HELP.
I was going to make exactly the same comment, I really don’t know what Councils in Kabwe do
Kambwili, this is why you’re always being reprimanded. Learn to close that beak of yours or else king cobby will have no choice but to fire you! Street vending is Nkandu Luo’s issue to deal with; you should stick to FAZ and youth related issues. Stop behaving like an unruly chimp.
sata allowed street vendors wish u guys know what u r doing.
Someone kick these monkeys out of govt. I’m sure some people are feeling embarrassed by what is happening and being done by this government. PF are going to be the first ONE-TERM party since independence. Zambia is dirtier now than even just 6 months ago, these guys have not talked about or implemented any development programmes since they came into power. The only programmes they are implementing were left by the MMD. PF and Sata have concetrated on antagonising every other tribe that is not Bemba and that has been their pre-occupation. They think development is about reorganising tribes. The next govt will have a lot of work un-doing what Sata and his fellow i.d.i.o.ts are now doing. It’s nonsense. We have dull children in charge of Zambia. Makes me absolutely SICK sometimes.
There was no street vending in Chingola but after the Presidents decree the corridors are sudenly full of street vendoes. Its only the one who decreed who’ll be able to stop this mess. Introducing a saturday morning market f will be a good idea than whats hapening now. Atleast Kitwe has some rehabilitated roads like Katanta street but why is Chingola so neglected. Try to drive to Kabundi secondary school or any township and see what chingola people have to go through each time they leave home to go for work.Where are our MPS?
You PF cadres coming hard on Kambwili you should just keep quiet. We need MP like Kambwili. Luo is nothing. If she can’t talk, let Kambwili talk for her. Why didn’t the people in Kitwe call on Luo to talk on their behalf. Let Kambwili talk. He is well of & he won’t care much. His heart is for people. You PF cadres should be telling Sata to follow the wisdom of Kambwili on this issue.
You cannot expect any cleanliness from these Kaponyas. They have turned Zambia into a stinking shi.t.hole. Worldwide problem, my foot! South of the Zambezi; the saying goes ‘On your way northwards, once you cross the Zambezi river you know you are now in the Real Africa’!
lol………….
Street Vending Nonsense should come to an end; I strongly condemn it as it makes our cities look dirty. Other thing we need to consider is proper public transport, Big buses with proper numbers, time scheduled. Let those blue MMD buses out of the streets. Why can’t we be pioneers for innovative services in Africa??
Concentrate on your ministry ewe chikala and be focussed…kafwiiti kako.
This is time Kambwili will be fired.
Kambwili u are our man if only we had 2 of u in this fools govt
#nostradamus, you’re a typical Kaponya shushushu. Leave Hon Kambwili. He is making more sense on this one than your president. We need more Kambwili’s to put sense in Sata’s head. How can you have markets on the streets 7 days a week? Even for one day we don’t need market on the streets. It is unhealthy.
CREATE JOBS FOR YOUR YOUTHS & THEY’LL NOT STREET VEND. INTRODUCE WINDFALL TAX & INVEST IN RECONSTRUCTION OF INFRASTRUCTURE TO CREATE JOBS.
@ 1 it depends what you call it, I have seen people selling in the streets in Denmark, except they are not many and they use some sort of neat mobile stalls. Its is obvious our unemployment levels by far cannot be compared to that of Denmark. In South Africa it is the same people even sell roasted maize in the streets of cities, again in South Africa the cities or shopping districts are vast so vendors are spread out. These people in the streets (Zambian)are not there for fun, hence even the stance of HE MCS on the issue. GOD BLESS ZAMBIA
@ 19 saimbwede you can say that because you ave three square meals a day and in between meals and money to spend for your internet, and likely live overseas, but YOU DONT KNOW WHAT IT MEANS TO TRY TO RAISE A K 15 000 TO PURCHASE SOME SMALL PACK OF MAIZE MEAL, TO TRY AND RAISE MONEY TO PAY FOR SCHOOL FEES, TO RAISE SOME MONEY TO TAKE A CHILD TO HOSPITAL and atleast in the streets the little merchandise can sell quickly, but all you talk about is your country men making the streets dirty, whose country is it anyway. It belongs to all even the poorest in our society nowonder HE MCS was voted for because has the poor at heart. GOD BLESS ZAMBIA.
@ 15 Independent Observer taumfwa!!! Ke ke ke he he he!!!
Big Pipe & Independence Observer, guys you are have nailed it. Uyu umwaiche or munyamata is a Black mamba that needs to peel off the skin. He is confused. In what capacity is he yapping, as a president or minister without portifolio. It seems like he is telling sata to get him out of the sports ministry. He is a kaponya and wants to be in the streets where he belongs. Bloody Fool!
Who cheated you that street vending in a worldwide problem? Because you have legalized it on all our Zambian streets and toilets then you believe its Global menace?
Who cheated you that street vending is a worldwide problem? Because you have legalized it on all our Zambian streets and toilets then you believe its Global menace?
Zoro! No need to refer another human being as a Black Mamba. Its better just to put your points across.
That said, street vending is done out of desparation. When you are a mother and have kids with empty stomachs you can take extra miles to bring food on the table.
Kambwili and his boss need to implement programs that can compound these issues. They should work with private sector, inspire the youth, empower communities, development programs, create an environment and the rest is up to each individuals. There is too much talk less actions especially with Kambwili.
Special Agent Dr. M
Sorry, I don’t answer to personal attacks. I am not sure which angle you are coming from, towards me. I will pass back a blank cheque over to you.
I would rather learn from other bloggers or educate and share my views.
I guess that’s the essence of blogging…
Hey people it is a worldwide problem; Kambwili has been to all corners of the world…eastern province, Muchinga, North-western, Western, Luapula, Southern provinces; so hear him when he says it is a worldwide problem…
you can talk all year long but the answer is simple….jobs jobs jobs jobs and jobs
God help us endure the next five long years.
Amen
STREET VENDING IS A PROBLEM THE PRESIDENT BREWED FOR THE COUNTRY BY ALLOWING THOSE BOYS. I DONT EXPERIENCE SUCH HERE I SOUTH AFRICA..I HAVE LIVED IN NAMIBIA THAT NONSES IS NOT ALLOWED. SOMEBODY BIT MORE THAN HE CAN CHEW, IT WILL BE WAR TO DRIVE OUT THOSE RACOONS FROM THE STREETS.
Is there a Council in Kabwe, what is it called………………..Kabwe Rural Council? Is so dirty, pathetic, every space on the multi potholed ‘streets’ is taken up by vendors.
Street vending is NOT due to poverty. It is more of the opposite i.e lack of disciplined work ethic and diligence which manifests itself in low economic productivity leading to lack of jobs with good living wages & therefore poverty which leads to street vending.
Iwe Special Agent Dr Mr, shot told you that lack of having a 3 square meal is the cause of street vending? Lack of planning is the cause and immunity to filth is the cause of it. Ywe don’t need people in the streets for them to make a living. All those on the streets can make a living in designated trading areas through out our towns or cities whether open or covered. The problem of street vending in Zambia is political. Sata and Kafupi introduced it in order to get votes. Sata directed people to get back on the streets because he said that if they are chased from the streets they won’t vote for PF. So who are you fooling? Sata will not go thru again.
aaahe,vachilamo mwe
