Government has taken a swipe at MMD aspiring presidential candidate Nevers Mumba over his utterances and the role he played in Friday’s fracas at the funeral service for former vice president George Kunda.
Minister of information and broadcasting Fackson Shamenda says government has sufficient information that Dr. Mumba played a part in the confusion that transpired at the church service.
Mr. Shamenda says it is unfortunate that Dr. Mumba has chosen to castigate and call government names without looking at the positive development it has embarked on.
And speaking at the same press briefing Foreign affairs minister Given Lubinda has called on Dr. Mumba to restrain himself and focus on his political career.
But Dr. Mumba has denied causing the fracas.
Dr.Mumba says he was inside the church building and wondered how he could have been part of the confusion outside.
The requiem mass for former Vice-President George Kunda, who was put to rest yesterday at Lusaka’s Leopards Hill Memorial Park, briefly appeared like it would get messy when opposition MMD and Patriotic Front (PF) cadres almost turned on each other on the sprawling grounds of the Cathedral of the Child Jesus.
The scenario prompted President Michael Sata to publicly ask the Inspector-General of Police Stella Libongani to deal with the trouble-makers and restore respect to the funeral as hundreds gathered to pay their last respects to the late Kunda.
“I have just received information that there are some youths outside wearing T-shirts saying ‘don’t kutina’ who want to cause confusion but I’ve learnt from KK (Kenneth Kaunda) not to respond to attacks…with me, when I respond, my tongue can be sharp,” he said before asking Ms Libongani to ensure there was order outside.
Don’t Kutina is a slogan used by Pastor Nevers Mumba’s supporters in the MMD. The cadres, donning their respective party regalia, which for the MMD, included some emblazoned with the words ‘don’t kutina’, tried to outdo each other in drumming and singing, with each group attempting to gain entry into the Cathedral.
But with the police discerning the potential for physical conflict if the cadres were let inside quickly separated them. However, that still did not stop them trying to outdo each other. A few officers tried to explain to the rival groups that they should respect the church premises and the sorrowful occasion.
A few, however, saw this in different light and wanted to send the message that they were the loudest, if not the strongest group.
Fortunately, the police, who were calm despite their patience being stretched beyond what seemed normal, explained to the cadres that this was no occasion to play politics.
“This is our funeral, we don’t know why you have even allowed these PF cadres to come here in such large numbers and start singing here,” a woman, clad in an MMD chitenge material bearing the portrait of former President Rupiah Banda, was heard telling a police officer.
On the other hand, another man who had PF chitenge wrapped round his shoulder and was involved in an argument with a woman warned that if the MMD wanted to provoke them, they would be met head-on as they are used to such scenarios, having spent 10 years in the opposition.

PF danda heads. How can the Minister and his president exibit there foolishing acussing Nevers Mumba. They could have stopped all this nosense by just tlling there stupid cadres to leave as this made sense for MMD cadres to be in there attire since Kunda was MMD. But PF being so foolish thought they could make political mirage. And just read Sata’s response. He is not different from his cadres only that Ukwa lives at State House and they on the streets. They are all hooligans of the highest order. Does anyone honestly believe Nevers Mumba can behave even a bit like Ukwa?

Social evolution takes time. A tribe of baboons can not produce tigers. Our leaders can not make us harm each other if we are not already corrupt enough to allow it. Many of these cadres are undeducated and uninformed cousins and uncles of ours. Its our responsibility to spread knowledge so that people don’t act from ignorance. Intellectuals are the people who are best trained in various fields, not politicians, generally speaking. Use tools like the media positively. Be innovative. Don’t just point at leaders. Politicians take lots of blame, most of which they deserve, but lots of other people are not playing their part, otherwise politicians would not get away with it. Intellectuals, start using your intellectuality for more than just technical application. Diagnose and prescribe.
UNIP IS POWER… UNIP mulilo, waikatako, wapya… This is where this politics of patronage, of boma ni boma, started, not with MMD. MMD did not do much to change it. We hope under the PF government it can start to change, but the PF can not do it alone, and neither can the leaders. Every one must learn to exercise restraint, and where there is ignorance, it is up to those of us who think we know something to inform our less privileged folks. We can’t leave it all to politicians, or always use politicians as a scapegoat for our collective inefficiency. We must also accept that these deep-set trends in the people will need time and collective effort to change. The blame game is not on.
Oh, and by the way, it does matter who started the nonsense. To fix a problem you have to find its source. Whoever started it, if ignored, can do it again. That one must be sorted out, also as a deterrent to others who think they can just start things, whether they are in power or in opposition.

UNIP funeral, only UNIP supporters attended and at an ANC funeral the same happened. What were PF and UPND supporters doing at a MMD funeral. National leaders were entitled to attend and not their political followers.
For a person who was once Vice Prdesident it cannot be a funeral for only one party or group. Supporters of other groups can come, but they must behave. I think wearing party regalia at such high profile funerals should be banned. Freedom of assembly does not allow us to deny people access to a public function, but on the other hand, people must not abuse that freedom to do stupid things, either from their own emotions or from some paymaster.
I think the PF govt is not the waste Zambia has ever seen. The difference we have now is that the people’s minds have been enlightened more on political matters and now everyone knows his rights even the unschooled chaps. What makes it even more interesting is that Sata gave wrong ideas of democracy to the people. And now they are using the same wrong ideas on him. So politics of intimidation in Zambia will never end.

This was an MMD funeral because GK was MMD. Another party showing posturing naughtyness beggars belief. Yes, if GK was accorded a state funeral does not remove MMD from it, invensely all others parties become only observers and pay their respect within our moral values. What were the PF cadres doing at GK’s funeral in their party regalia? That was provocative to MMD cadres. GK was MMD and MMD party cadres had the right to mourn him in their party attire. PF seems to believe that if Nevers Mumba wins MMD elections, that will be the beginning of the end of PF. HH suffers not only because of tribe but because he’s also perceived to be a political lightweight who can’t win you an election.
