Chief Macha of the Tonga speaking people of Choma district says chiefs, like any other person, can take part in politics but that there should a limit on how far their participation should go.

In an interview with ZANIS in Lusaka today, Chief Macha said there was also need for the new constitution to have considerable authority on various matters that affect the people and the nation as a whole.

He said some of the bad vices has taken a toll among people in various communities including rural areas because traditional leaders have little authority to deal with them.

Chief Macha cited vices such as defilement, early marriages among others as vices that require a certain level of authority to be effectively addressed.

He noted that adequate legislation that grants authority to traditional leaders will help to deal with such matters because chiefs will be able to intervene at short notice.

Meanwhile, the Gender Studies Department of the University of Zambia has presented a report on the Impact of customary practices on gender equality in Zambia.

This was at the ongoing sensitisation meeting for traditional leaders on Gender Based Violence in Lusaka today under the auspices of the Ministry of Gender and Child Development.

Presenting the report Patrick Sakala said the report which whose research was conducted in four districts from four provinces cites early marriages and initiation ceremonies as some of the cultural practices against Gender Based Violence.

Several Chiefs from various parts of the country are attending the two-day meeting which closes tomorrow.

  1. Lusaka Times, Zambia Reports, Zambian W.a.t.c.h d.o.g, Daily Nation and other emerging news platforms have rendered M’membe’s failed and unethical tabloid moribund. Zambians know what they want and can see through desperation of failure. They need high integrity, high quality news sources. Implying: 1) Not driven by corruption, control and ad selling. 2) Covers how the progressive world really works and Zambia should be, high quality writing, and nkhani zamukachasu and hatred which M’membe has been known for shoving.

  2. Hmm. I reckon at the very least there is a ceremonial place for preserving culture. Our paths are our own to carve and we don’t have to throw the baby out with the bath water when it comes to the modern placement of chiefs. Traditions hold or become redundant according to how useful or harmless they are in current times but cultures are ever evolving. A united ‘political’ voice through their particular ministry or an independent cultural body might encourage shared values without direct influence on individual chiefs to play ball to influence political outcomes. Tourism and IP  are key sectors for chiefs to help generate revenue for their areas.

  3. Membe ,nchito and PF are just a joke. They have treated all zambians as fools. As if stealing k14B is not enough they are still syphoning our resources whist we trade in insults among ourselves. Now they have been joined by Chikopa

  4. Chiefs should not indulge themselves in politics period..You want your whole chiefdom (village) to support whichever party you support as a chief. It will be a very cheap way of buying votes corrupt the chief you will the entire village

  5. Wise Chief-just straight to the point..,! proud of my Chief. Pls my Chief ,also highlight the need for dams rehabilitation and construction. We need alot of water reserves to support animal and crop farming on which SP anchored.

  6. Well said Exhaust Blown Diffuser @ 8. Chiefs are easy to buy and that means villagers will be even easier to buy as you just have to corrupt one person and you’ve got all the votes in the bag. Chief Macha, just stick to your traditional role until the evolving culture renders you totally redundant.
