Education Ministry Regrets UNZA Strike Action

Share

Education Minister John Phiri

The Ministry of Education has regretted the strike actions taken by University of Zambia lecturers. Education Minister Dr. John Phiri says it will determine terms and conditions of service that will help in resolving disparities and conditions of service at public Universities and colleges.

The Ministry has also put in place measures that will further assist to eliminate the causes of huge debts which universities have accrued over the years. The Minister said this in response to the strike action taken by UNZA lecturers. On Tuesday night UNZA students protested over what they termed government’s alleged failure to open the institution.

Earlier the students gave government a one day ultimatum to address the delay in opening the institution or face protests. UNZA was supposed to open on Sunday, June 24, 2012.

Lecturers at the institution withheld student’s results demanding salary increment and better conditions of service, the move that prompted the university’s senate to postpone the opening dates indefinitely.

The University of Zambia Lecturers and Researchers Union-UNZALARU- has since vowed that the strike action by lecturers will continue following failure to reach a consensus with management over salary hike.

  1. John Phiri is the most USELESS AND STUPID DOC EVER EXISTED WHO CAN LET THE STUATION AT UNZA REACH TO STRIKE. HE KNOWS THE UNZA PROBLEM VERY WELL THAN UKWA WHO HAS NEVER BN EVEN AT LUKASHA TRADES AND HE COULDNT COME OUT TO RESOLVE JUST BECOS IS CORUPTLY APOINTD MINISTER.

  2. When someone calls you a “Chimbwi No Plan” government, you get annoyed cause you think he is insulting you. Now you want to address problems at all universities and colleges? You didnt know about that in the last 8 months?

  3. Are there people out there who still hold to the ‘man of action’ mantra?

Or have we now all realised how fooled we were?

  4. Firtstly, look for another photo for the hon. minister, kind of each time he makes news, you bring up the same photo…boring, secondly, having been a former don, he has to choose his words carefully when commenting on unza, statements like “The Ministry has also put in place measures that will further assist to eliminate the causes of huge debts ” means the great unza will have to reduce spending, depriving the dons of certain previleges, however, he must be firm, he is no longer a don, but a boss of dons.

  5. Sata is clueless on how to a country some pipo are just better confined to be in the opposition so that they can make noise and talk more

  6. Lecturers should not cry, they wanted to in the boat – do you remember pabwato, pabwato!!!!! Good luck as you cross the river Zambezi infested with crocodiles.

  7. How come lecturers strike every year?, do they have to broker a deal every annualy? strikes never stop.

  8. No. 8, Go and manage your wife. This Dr John Phiri looks like munkombwe, he should fire all lecturers and employ chinese, see what happens

  9. UNZA, UNZA when will it ever end? With all the best brains at that institution, why can’t they come up with a viable strategic plan that frees the institution from too much dependency on Govt funds? Unza problems have been there ever since that institution was opened and it looks like successful Govts all do not seem to care much about ever finding an ever lasting solution to the financial problems of this institution. Could privatisation solve the problem?

  10. ‘the devil is in the detail’ “expertise is the detail” what are the measures? anyone can say we have put measures, but that is not enough to convince anyone to buy your statement. Deliver on your promises! More money in the people’s pockets: employment for all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. Indiscipline has it’s beginning. Am sure most of these lecturers were UNZA students, and so the trend continues. It is pathetic behavior because the strikes are done every year, if not twice in a year. Qualified people behaving like this? Ukutemwa indalama ba fee colour!

  12. #15
What UNZA lecturers are asking for is the same salaries that are paid to CBU lecturers to be applied to UNZA lecturers (equal conditions of service for equal qualification at all public universities). This is fair and does not mean kutemwa indalama. Do you know that now the brain drain is from UNZA to CBU?. Even at SDF level, the disparity in their allowances is too big! Whats so special about CBU?

  13. # 16 the Govt s stand has been the 3 Public universities need to have same conditions. that is the reason why govt has not gotten into negotitiations as they are waiting for represantation from the 3 institutions. however UNZA has become impatient and thus have gone on strike

  14. You don’t have to regret the action taken by lecturers bwana minister. Last year you promised the lecturers that they will be paid ZMK5million as housing allowance per month and many other goodies surrounding the their package. Now that you are in power you want to start jiving and samasorting, why? Pay them as you promised. 90 days is over and you almost clocking 365 days. It’s a shame having such a government with so many inconsistencies.

  15. Just privatise UNZA, and all these so-called challenges will vanish! UNZA has more students on its enrollment data base than it can actually contain – paying billions into the university coffers; yet the institution crumbles before everyone’s eyes every year that goes by! The place now looks like a museum (if it isnt already), and yet the institution keeps introducing new streams almost every quinquennium: currently, UNZA is running parallel, distance, fast-track and full time programmes – all churning in billions of money. Question is, where does all this money go?

  16. How sad it is that most youths supported this govt and so far the govt does not seem to realize the they are two key areas which will address the plight of youths. The two key areas are education and job creation. Pls youths in future look for a party which is clear and has the capacity to deliver in these two key areas, otherwise you shall remain tools to the end and not to benefit in the process. Being happy with leadership of a country is one thing, but them having capacity to deliver is another issue. Not sure if PF can deliver going by the happenings in the last 9 months 3 weeks. Ministers speed less energy on these two issues (job creation and education), but spend more energy on M’membe’s agenda.

  17. Drove from the airport on a beautiful road, admired innovative resort to traffic circles which have decongested traffic somewhat; it was a breezy ride – then I got startled to see what is called a university! It looked like a bomb shelter right out of an Eastern European 2nd Word War narrative… I made sure I went to a game park where sights are more natural than what I was being forced to see in what are called towns and cities…

  18. Enjoy riding and paddling the boat since you decided using water transport (pabwato as opposed to flying). Best wishes

  19. Minister has said nothing. So it is true these guys talk before they plan. I hope he is planning now to implement the new salaries and open UNZA.

  20. By the way, is this minister a twin brother to Munkombwe or hes just a Munkombwe’s incarnate?? Old pipo need to be cared for not them taking a caring role!!!!

  21. Minister John Phiri should be more vigorous in resolving the issues affecting UNZA, be it lecturers, be it students. We can’t be hearing the same stories about the institution, during the reigns of UNIP, MMD and now PF. The current government should make a decision to be different from the previous regimes and resolve UNZA’s problems permanently. Why is it that in the sub-region only universities in Zambia are prone to disturbances, year in, year out?

  22. I now c y some pipo wud call u CHIMBWI NO PLAN….dats da problem of having a president who has nevr passed thru’ da lecture room of any of public university on our zambian soil, he does nt even understand wat a lecture room is nor does he understand wat goes on there. SHAME to those who voted u in. I miss) big time coz he had the heart 4UNZA increasing studentss’ meal allowances by 125% a history in da zambian govt en no closure ws experienced in his 3yr tenure. Now ba CNP hv led to da indefinite closure of the great UNZA. Basakalanyongo aba, u *****s I wish u wud never meet me in govt wen I tk on wt Milupi.
