UPND Cadres Pounce on Maize Suspected for “Vote Buying”

With less than 48 hours before the Livingstone By-Election, high political tension has emerged in the tourist capital with Southern Province Permanent Secretary, Edwin Zimbunu, allegedly caught with over 600 bags of maize meant for buying voters.

And an angry team of opposition United Party for National Development-UPND- besieged Mr. Zimbunu’s house after a truck and trailer registration number AJC 1338 was found offloading the commodity.

The UPND cadres caused commotion at the PS’s residence where they openly harassed Livingstone District Commissioner, Paul Sensele, in full view of the police.

UPND spokesperson Cornelius Mwetwa has accused the ruling Patriotic Front-PF- of scheming a plot of vote buying ahead of this Thursday’s by election.

But Mr. Zimbunu has denied the allegations saying the bags of maize belong to the Gwembe District Commissioner who he is assisting to sale the commodity.

Meanwhile according to minutes of an urgent meeting of the District Conflict Management Committee held in the Office of the Deputy Director for Administration, a complaint had been received from UPND Campaign Manager a Ms. Kabwiku of the maize that had been offloaded at Mr. Zimbunu’s residence.

Afterwards Ms. Kabwiku lodged a complaint with the District Conflict Management Committee.

Later Mr. Zimbunu informed them that the said maize was for the District Commissioner in Gwembe who wanted help in selling the maize at National Milling Company.

It has since been resolved that police will provide security for both maize and the PS’s residence while the said bags of maize will be counted by both UPND cadres and police.

Accordingly the UPND officials will be there to witness the transportation of the maize to National Milling Company tomorrow.

  1. This government will be the worst government ever. Great job UPND for stopping these crooks…. They have run out of empty promises and now they are bribing voters….

  2. As far as am concerned that was not meant for bribes. I have observed people dont want to reason but act out of ignorance.

  3. Interesting indeed, escort them to NMC and see receipts and payment of the maize.good job UPND, UKWA is in trouble

  4. youths being used for cheap politics, what a nation? greedy people, fools, satanists, idiots e.t.c

  5. UPND should have waited for the maize to leave that house and gather more evidence. Now as it is its just an allegation. Please use your full brains Mweetwa than inciting trouble.

  6. maize for votes. if you suspect that someone is a thief, lay low and catch him in the act. Do not intercept him at his home and accuse him of intending to steal. When he denies, you will have no evidence against him. Now the maize is sent to NMC. If PF wins, how will UPND petition? If Livingstone is UPND stronghold, why is UPND jittery?

  7. upnd cadres be careful, shud learn 2 analize or obeserve properly be4 rushing into making decision or act.2016 4 hh.

  8. UPND no style, no quality. What about in Muchinga and Chama North? That move isn’t good enough to me. Even if they win what are they gonna change?

  9. UPND CADRES ARE VERY CHILDISH AND USELESS AND MOST OF THEM ARE ILLITERATE MOST ESPECIALLY NETO HALWABALA THEIR DISTRICT PUBLICITY!PEOPLE IF THOSE BAGS OF MAIZE WERE MEANT FOR VOTE BUYING THEY WEREN’T GOING TO BE OFFLOADED AT 10HRS DURING DAYLIGHT IN FULL VIEW OF EVERYONE.UPND KNOWS THAT IT HAS ALREADY LOST THE BY ELECTIONS NO WANDER THEY ARE ACTING CHILDISH AND BRINGING THUGS FROM LUSAKA

  10. But Mr. Zimbunu has denied the allegations saying the bags of maize belong to the Gwembe District Commissioner who he is assisting to sale the commodity. STUPIDITY AT ITS BEST

  11. Who is stupid in this case UPND or Sibunu? Sibunu check facts before you derail UPND.

  12. The die is cast and we have less than 24hrs to see who is who on Zambian political scene!

  13. we learnt from the previous elections that when people want change they will get it. UPND dont make the people of Livingstone seem cheap. they can not be bought for a bag of maize.

  14. OH UPND cadres are childish … and PF cadres who beat up anyone near a polling station driving a truck are fine?

  15. So the official residence of the PS is now a maize depot? And the PS himself is a go-between in the transaction of selling maize. I am curious, I thought Choma Milling Company was nearer to Gwembe than the Livingstone one? There are more questions than answers Mr PS, Sir.

  16. UPND crying foul. Even if it were true, maize cannot buy votes. Ask RB he will tell you the truth. Only your actions and ideas can win votes. Ever heard how UPND would improve things if they came to power? Surely not, all they do is condemn, condemn and condemn, completely clueless what they would do. We all know the problems of Zambia. Tell us what you would do to change. I am sure you have no clue. Just making noise like empty vessels.

  17. desperate UPND and their cadrs have no strategy. they should have allowed this maize to be distrubted to the voters and get it as evidence incase PF wins the bye elction. now its just emotions at play here and no concrete evidence that this maize was indeed intended to be used to bribe voters.

  18. THOSE WHO ARE SAYIN ITS NT BRIBE,WHAT IS IT THEN?DIDNT U SEE THE GIVEN COLOURED N OTHER SENIOUR MINISTERS KNEELING ??no pa fwaka,we dont need them.desparate thieves

  19. Strange things do happen. If MMD or UPND was caught red handed as PF has been, a press conference would have been made and all news papers made to write about theft of maize meant to feed poor people. To day UPND is labled tribal and yet Mr Sata and his PF govt is the most tribal clique Zambia has ever experienced, yet the tag goes to HH. Corruption is talked about with MMD and yet Mr Sata began corruption with Mezalf, even the house Sata was living in was initially not offered to him, he removed a civil servant from there had it repaired and bought it himserlf. Mr Sata takes pleasure in the suffering of others hence his comments on funerals and to relatives to the deceased. Yet Zambians hardly see it. Strange things really do happen.

  20. I have seen a picture in The Post showing the PF candidate and ministers kneeling before the people at a campaign rally in Livingstone. They looked like criminals paraded for lynching. How could Sata humiliate his colleagues like that. That is taking pranksterism too far. Clearly that candidate and the ministers have no pride. That is humiliation!!!

  21. But who is the master, the people or an MP..so who should kneel before the other? is it not that one who is employed…the MP????

  22. CONERLIUS MWEETWA BU DULL MY MAN.i DONT KNOW WHAT KIND OF AN M.P YOU ARE. I CAN NEVER WASTE MY VOTE ON YOU AGAIN. UBUKOPO

  23. What goes around comes around.PF used to impound vehicles allegedly carrying ballot papers and many other silly things. Why not UPND now?PF has completely no message for the people. What can they tell us when there is no route of achieving what they promised.Has winter Kabimba ever tested elections?

  24. I do not know why this stupidity is being tolerated by Police, how can you allow these idiots to harass the PS, this is stupidity of the highest order.

  25. Laughable . . How about RATSA impounding your stationed vehicle at your Residence for not having a Fittnes/ Tax or even Insurance. ?
Tell me something. If you are appointed as DC, PS or any other Position does it mean that one must abandon his business background?
Desperate times call for desperate actions. So what if mr Zumbunu takes the maize to NMC and sells it ,then PF wins those Seats, what will UPND do.? Claim they milled the commodity and secretely distributed mealie meal..?
