Police introduce night roadblocks

Police in Lusaka has introduced Mobile Police Posts and night security Road Blocks aimed at reducing crime in the city.

Lusaka Province Commissioner of Police, Solomon Jere told ZANIS today that the road blocks which will commence this evening will be mounted in Lusaka’s Central Business District.

Dr. Jere said the introduction of night road blocks is aimed at tracking down dangerous criminals by searching all suspicious vehicles with dangerous objects suspected to be used in criminal acts, stolen items and other criminal elements such as human trafficking among others.

Dr. Jere further said the mobile police posts are to be concentrated in areas that do not have police posts such as Misisi and Garden compounds of Lusaka and would be rotated weekly.

He added that police has since intensified security patrols and is currently revising the inclusion of reservists into the current rezoning of the police operations.

Dr. Jere further called for community participation in alleviating crime through active participation in neighbourhood watch patrols.

Lusaka has in the recent past experienced escalating crime levels.

    • This is additional service. Putting police officers in danger as you know daylight robbery has claimed many police dying on duty :(

  2. Good job solomon and good luck. However the call for neighbourhood patron should approached with caution seeing as thieves nowadays are more dangerous and armed  than in the days we we used to do patrons as citizens 

  4. the other thing that could help in reducing arms would be to undertake clean up exercise after all we have seen old solutions (ZNS) contained in the 1st National Development plan and in the reforms such the matro or choma declaration being brought back 

  6. This is a good move, however it calls for special assessment before implementation because armed robbers have the ability to dress up like police officers and attack citizens when they are stopped by the people in uniforms at night…In my opinion, its good but risky at the same time

  8. the problem is consistent. we start and fail in the long run. Look at the great east road project of alternating the roads, it started and it failed. the introduced the issue of Police positioning at the roundabouts and control traffic, it was working well and they have started coming late again. please we need measures that we go for a while.

  12. These roads blocks have been there on Great North road (Lusaka-Kafue) for quiet some time now. job well done Dr.

  14. While the idea sounds interesting, it does not inspire much cost and operational wise. I recently visted Zambia from Malawi and was stopped by Manda Hill post police for taking a wrong lane. Instead of collecting revenue from me and many others in similar position, we were being asked to pay police officers bribes. Many paid bribes. This introduction will be a money spinner for police officers whose harbits have not changed from the Banda days

  15. Even if the police were taking bribes, their presence alone will make a difference in detering criminals. It would also help if the police salaries were increased to a point where one has to think twice before taking a bribe. They should also invest in more vehicles that way they can patrol the neighbourhoods at night because even the sound of a car alone will scare off some home invading thieves. Thieves are like roaches, you cant eliminate them all but you can control them.

  21. Rd blocks to spread to areas like yumba Yanga as well where thugs shop from pples homes on a daily basis.

  22. The problem is the criminals are good friends with the cops. The cops supply the firearms and uniforms. If there is a riot the police always have transport but if you are being robbed at night, the cop will tell you that there is no transport. Worse still he even goes further to ask you if you can go and pick them from the police station(With armed criminals outside my house waiting to pounce). Get serious guys.

What we need is more intelligent policing such as the imploration of DNA database, a Police National Computer, Extensive CCTV coverage in hotspots and complusory for some kinds of businesses etc. The people who commit crimes are usually the same with the trouble being catching them in the act or identifying them. We should also have a central fines processing system.

Fake speed cameras that dont even photograph anything unlike real stuff in developed world. Now on top of minimum wage i have to pay cops at night as well. People are getting robbed out of control these police are useless to stop real crime. These days your not safe even with armcore , wall fence etc.
