His Excellency Mr Rupiah Bwezani Banda, the Fourth President of the Republic of Zambia, has described the death of former First Lady Mama Betty Kaunda as a sad chapter in Zambia’s history.

This is contained in a statement issued to the media by Mikatazo Wakumelo Administrative Assistant in the office of the Fourth Republican President.

President Banda has also urged all Zambians to honour the late Mama Kaunda by emulating her patience, love and tolerance, attributes that made her a loyal companion of her husband and Zambia’s founding President Kenneth Kaunda for 66 years.

The former Head of State says, having known the Kaunda’s for over 50 years, he is deeply touched by Mama’s Kaunda’s demise and it is his prayer that Dr Kaunda, the Kaunda family and the entire nation will be granted God’s strength to bear the burden of death.

“Mama Kaunda was a mother to all of us. She has been unwell for a long time and it was always our desire that she would be healed. But it is sad that it has come to this. Indeed, our plans are not God’s plans.

“On behalf of my wife, my family and indeed on my own behalf, it is my wish that all Zambians will mourn our departed former First Lady with dignity and abundant love,” President Banda says.

We are mourning, please contribute to the dignity of this sombre period by avoiding unnecessary insults on the President.

Do you know that it is the current President who recently honoured mama Betty since independence as all other Presidents including your so called President for all Zambians never thought of her contributions, just because she was a woman and a wife.
